g i joe cast G.I. Joe 2 Cast Gets Trimmed

/Film has spotted an interesting development over the Twitter account of actress Rachel Nichols, who played Scarlett in G.I. Joe. Nichols dropped a bomb when she revealed that Paramount isn’t bringing back much of the principal cast of G.I. Joe 1 for G.I. Joe 2, the sequel which is being directed by Jon Chu and written by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

So who is coming back for the next G.I. Joe? And what does this development mean about how the sequel is being approached? We’ll discuss.

First off, we’ll discuss which cast members are coming back. According to Nichols’ Tweet, the only characters from the first film coming back for the sequel are Snake Eyes (Ray Park), Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun), and Duke (Channing Tatum).

This would mean that G.I. Joe team members like Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Scarlett (Nichols), Breaker (Said Taghmaoui), Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), and General Hawk (Dennis Quaid) won’t be back, as well as Cobra members Destro (Christopher Eccleston), The Doctor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Zartan (Arnold Vosloo). We already knew that Sienna Miller wouldn’t be reprising her role as The Baroness.

To be honest this news doesn’t upset me that much – Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes were the only even mildly interesting part of G.I. Joe for me, and Duke is clearly coming back since he is the protagonist of the whole story. I always love to see AAA onscreen, but even Heavy Duty was somewhat irrelevant to the plot of the first film. However, unless new team members (read: more affordable actors) are being brought into play, having Duke and Snake Eyes vs. Storm Shadow and Whoever does not constitute a “G.I. Joe movie.” If you don’t have the Joe squad and certain iconic villains (Cobra Commander), all you’ve really got is a flick that’s G.I. Joe in name only.

/Film speculates that this drastic reduction in the cast is a likely indicator that Paramount is approaching G.I. Joe 2 on a much smaller scale than the first installment (smaller cast, more affordable director), similar to the way that Columbia Pictures is making Ghost Rider 2 for a fraction of what the first film cost, and with cost-effective directors. Both G.I Joe and Ghost Rider were films that managed to turn a profit (thanks in large part to the international market), though in both cases, the profits earned were apparently not strong enough for the respective studios to want to roll the dice twice on these sequels. Each sequel has been touted as a quasi-reboot of sorts for the respective franchises – in G.I. Joe‘s case, that “fresh start” approach was indicated by recent comments from the Hasbro CEO, who stated that audiences would not need to see G.I. Joe 1 to understand G.I. Joe 2.

'Ghost Rider 2' is also going for the small-scale approach

Obviously the studios are hoping the brand recognition combined with the lower cost of the films will make the profit margins even higher, but it remains to be seen whether these films will actually turn out well enough to attract the necessary viewers, returning customers and new recruits alike. Not doubting either of the directors (Chu on G.I. Joe 2, and Crank duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor on Ghost Rider 2), just saying that there is still a lot to prove here.

What do you think about G.I. Joe 2 shedding cast members? The film is slated to hit theaters in 2012.

  1. No JGL as Cobra? That’s stupid.

    • Agreed. Levitt was the best thing about the movie.

    • JGL was stupid to be in the first one. He makes great choices in the movies he wants to act in and GI Joe just did not fit in.

  2. I don’t understand why they are making a sequel at all..the first movie was just okay but Sienna Miller(I don’t normally care for her) was very hot in the dark wig and glasses as the Baroness..too bad that role won’t carry over..I think it would be a big mistake not to bring back Joseph Gordon-Levitt..

  3. No Baroness? She was the only reason the first film was worth watching, besides the Snake Eyes duel.

  4. No Scarlett? That’s crazy. Scarlett and Snake eyes go hand in hand. No hotties? Not watching.

    • yeah same not gonna watch it

  5. So I guess the sequel will be called G.I. Duke?

  6. Stupid peoplea makes stupid movies

  7. So the sequel will heavily depend on Channing Tatum and his acting? Hahaha this movie is screwed.

    • LMAO!! Hes on my black list of actors meaning if hes in it then its a no-go for me

      • Same here. No compromises.

    • I am amazed he keeps showing up in films.

His acting talent is limited to playing a white rapper… regardless of the role…

  8. Well, that doesn’t sound like good news. Not surprising, I guess, but I’m still not automatically going to play along.

Yes, a sharper focus wouldn’t hurt, but it still needs some of the other Joes (whether they’re new to this movie franchise or not) to fill out the screen.

I wanted Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols back as Baroness and Scarlett. They have some unresolved issues. Catfight, Part 2! :)

  9. As long as Snake Eyes is aboard I am fine.

  10. So let me get this straight. No Baroness, No Scarlett, No General Hawke and NO Cobra Commander!! That basicallt means that I WON’T BE seeing THIS movie.

  11. this sounds unbearable. in this case, i would just make it a spin-off titled ‘snake eyes’ and it wouldn’t be half bad

  12. I find this hard to believe. I’m not saying Nichols was lying or wrong; I’m just thinking that if they get rid of the cast (for the most part), they simply don’t have a movie. Maybe there was some kind of miscommunication, and a number of roles are being recast…? Maybe they’re bringing in new teammates (Flint, Lady Jaye, Spirit, Serpentor, Dr. Mindbender, Dr. Venom, etc.)…?

  13. hmm…Cobra Commander has to be in the movie as well as Scarlett and Zartan and Destro. I can understand how Baroness does not have to be in considering that Commander can hold her in order to keep Destro on a leash.

I’m interested in seeing how this plays out before any judgment is made. If they wish to focus just on Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Cobra Commander, Zartan, and Firefly, that’s good by me.

    • I keep seeing people saying, No Hawk, Scarlett, CC or Baroness, just because the actors are not playing them again, does not mean they wont be in the movie, they might, probably different actors. The actors dont represent the interpretation of the character. Anybody can fill the roles since in the first one there was no charcter development. Just like in IronMan 2 somebody else fill the role of WarMachine.

      • She said the ONLY characters returning are those three, everyone else isn’t coming back (or being re-cast).

        • True that, but that doesn’t necessarily means she knows 100% for sure if any other character is coming back, that’s what her publicist told her. Nobody even knows the story yet.

what we know so far is just bits and pieces, nothing else.

          • absolutely. it’s just a twitter tweet so it’s not gospel. personally, i’d be okay if they made a storm shadow and snake eyes movie that focused on their history. Of course you’d need cobra commander, zartan, and firefly.

  14. Yeah Im calling this as misinformed mumbo jumbo, but i do hope it is mostly right, Like I’ve said before get rid of Duke, Rip Cord, Heavy Duty, Breaker, and Hawk. Get someone else to play Cobra Commander, put the Hood back on him, Keep Destro, and The Baroness , recasted of course, and she need sto be evil again. Recast someone as Zartan and bring in the Dreadnoks, and Firefly. Then add in the new Joes, Flint, lady Jaye, Beach head, and Dial tone.

    • If Beach Head shows up, I’d be seriously stoked. Especially if they got…my goodness who would make a great Beach Head?

  15. they ruined the first with the majority of the cast acting horribly! a reboot after one film, pathetic! the new title should be G.I. TRIM! (reflection of costing cutting measures) i will rent this for $1.00 when it comes out on video LOL!

  16. Who cares!? Just watch Renegades. 10x’s better!

  17. I’m the only one who liked Marlon Wayans character huh? LOL!
    Oh well..

  18. i only mildly enjoyed G.I Joe so this doesn’t bother me at all, it just means there’ll be one less movie for me to watch ;)

  19. I will be skipping this movie. Maybe rent it on DVD……nah, wait till Netflix.

  20. I think people are misreading this. The actors are not coming back. That dose not mean the characters are not coming back.

  21. HOW THE F are they gonna do this sequel without all the characters they’ve established in the first!?

    Cobra Commander?
    Destro?
    Zartan impersonating the President?

    • The posting does not mean that the characters of Zartan, Destro and Cobra Commander are out. Remember that these characters are all masked and in some fashion could be played by any one. There are so many other Joes that can be brought on board. I am a little surprised that they left Scarlett out since her relationship with Snake Eyes was something to be developed (although they left it out for the most part in the first movie). They had all these characters in the original movie and it made it so childish and relied so much on special effects. I look forward to this “reboot” with maybe a more story driven plot than comedic relief and computer generated visuals.

  22. Having grown up watching the original GI Joe, I can’t believe what a horrid job Channing Tatum did as Duke. When I saw the title of this article I was praying he wasn’t coming back. My excitement for the first movie quickly eroded as I watched Tatum’s bad acting stink up the joint. Plus the screen writing was awful. I’m a big fan of GI Joe, but so far this movie franchise has completely tanked.

  23. My guess is that it will be more of a cast change

  24. It should be a short film since Snake Eyes dosen’t talk, there will be no conversation between him and Duke.

  25. Are you kidding me how can they do this to #2. One of the main reasons I liked the first one was because of Marlon Wayans, yeah I said it! Plus I totally agree with Fanboy321 they can’t just have something that surprising at the end of the first one and not say anything about it in the 2nd one! I am really pissed off!

  26. I don’t know much about the actual G.I. Joe franchise, I was willing to watch this movie just to see how it would be even though the first one was so disappointing. But now, after seeing Jon Chu’s the director, I don’t know.

  27. Okay Cobra Commander and Destro ALWAYS come back, but i too think it will be different actors in the parts. JGL is POSSABLY going to be busy with The Dark Knight Rises. So yeah why not replace that actor. And maybe if the characters all do actually return they will have better actors in those parts all around. but it is nice Ray Park is coming back. Don’t think anyone else could have played Snake Eyes better.

  28. What I really want to know is whether or not Larry Hama is involved and is the script any good? The rich history of the GI Joe comics and cartoons was somewhat ignored in the first film and there was alot about it that was ridiculous. The Joes should be a teamful of Jason Bournes, or considered to be a squad of 007′s. Can we get a screenplay from somewhat thats read a Tom Clancy book once in their lives?

  29. This movie was shocking – even Christopher Eccleston could not save it. I hope no-one comes back and they drop the idea of a sequel.
