‘G.I. Joe 2′ Pushed Back to March 2013 for 3D Conversion

gi joe retaliation trailer G.I. Joe 2 Pushed Back to March 2013 for 3D Conversion

Here’s an unexpected twist: Paramount is delaying the release date for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, just over a month before the sequel was originally due to hit theaters around the U.S. Retaliation has now been pushed back an entire nine months to a March 29th, 2013 date – where it will face off against The Host during its opening weekend.

The reason for said abrupt delay? Paramount wants to convert the film to 3D, in order to improve its box office prospects overseas.

Deadline quotes an unnamed Paramount head as saying (about Retaliation):

“We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of ‘Titanic’‘s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out.”

The quality of Titanic‘s post-converted 3D has demonstrated that non-native 3D films are not necessarily inferior to those shot in the format – assuming the proper time and effort is invested. Furthermore, there are certain recurring set pieces featured in the Retaliation trailers to date (especially the cliff-side ninja battle) that suggest the sequel could stand to benefit from the added dimension.

Of course, the delay is still disappointing news for everyone who was looking forward to a second G.I. Joe movie – one that appears to be an improvement on its predecessor. Still, considering that Retaliation was originally going to square-off against Amazing Spider-Manjust a few days after its opening here in the States – the move seems to make sense, from a financial perspective.

How does the news about Retaliation being post-converted to 3D make you feel? Sound off in the comments section.

As mentioned before: G.I. Joe: Retaliation is now positioned to hit theaters (in 2D, 3D, and, most likely, IMAX 3D) around the U.S. on March 29th, 2013.

  1. This is one of the reasons why I hate 3D! It totally takes away from the movie experience in terms of release dates and delays and prices etc etc. I doesn’t really contribute anything at all to the viewing. Kidding Me? Next year?? They totally toyed around their fans over a few extra bucks.

I don’t buy it. I don’t think they would pull such an obvious move over 3D. It’s cuz avengers is smashing records and spiderman has re hallmarks being another first rate super hero movie. It’s the white flag.

  2. EXPLETIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am thoroughly enraged this was like in my top five movies I was looking forward to this year!!!!! Screw you Paramount!!!!!!

    • This has nothing to do with 3D and everything to do with the failure of Battleship ! These guys are afraid Joe will get overwhelmed by the summer’s big guns like Avengers, Amazing Spider Man and Dark Knight Rises. Oh and then there’s MIB 3, Prometheus and Expendables 2 !! If you’re scared, say you’re scared!

      • I was more thinking…

I’m sure this has NOTHING to do with certain DC Comics movie that is released a week later. I know if I had a movie being released before a HUGELY anticipated movie (Dark Knight Returns, Avengers, etc.) I’d want to postpone also. The 3D is just a stupid but plausible reason to reschedule.

  3. This is EXACTLY what’s wrong with 3D these days – tack it on at the end just to make more money. 3D is meant to enhance the movie experience when it’s taken into consideration early, not just as a marketing gimmick. In 2013 people are going to be even more tired of 3D than they are now.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a 3D hater (I was a fan and supported it when Journey 1 came out, way before Avatar), but I hate that it’s being whored out the way it is now.

I’m going to make a point to see it in 2D only when it comes out, because, well, screw you Paramount for doing this to us.

    • I dont want to see it in theaters at all now!

    • Same here all this we’re delaying to convert sh*t is getting annoying.

  4. I think they got scRed of avengers dkr promitheus and spiderman.bring on transformers4!!!!

  5. 3D isn’t everything! corporate just want to suck Y, citizen, ect….dry…pur GREED!

  6. What is this? April fools day? Bag of dirt. I hate 3d even more now!

  7. Btw, I agree with Bio. I’m boycotting this now. Not gonna see it in the theaters at all.

  8. This is messed up, Paramount should have thought of this before hand. They get you all hyped up then say naw we’re not going to show it to you now. Like when they were making it they didn’t think about 3D, every other film maker has. I was really looking forward to seeing GI Joe. No one is happy about your decission to convert to 3D to make more money but your own money hungry selves. Go to HELL Paramount!!!

  9. Meh stupid really that the unnamed paramount boss is that optimistic for the film’s success with a 3D conversion.

  10. FAIL!!! The problem is, this film was never shot to be post converted to 3D so there is now going to be a s*** tonne of pointless extra scenes added to accommodate the post conversion 3D b*******. FAIL FAIL AND EVEN MORE FAIL!

  11. I too am boycotting this film in theaters now, I WILL HOWEVER BE DOWNLOADING IT AND SHARING IT TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE (how’d you like them apples paramount?)

  12. NOOOOOOO!

I thought it will get released this year then this news came along.

Why 3D? Paramount Pictures are idiots wanting money from people who are struggling with the economie crisis.

Screw it, this movie wil flop.

This news is a middle finger to the fans.

    • Every single reply to my comment was, in fact, retarded. Thank you for your ridiculous nerd rage replies. It only supported my original post.

I’m glad I didn’t speak about why this film was pushed back because of Battleship, Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, or ‘The Man of Steel’.

Only the Flying Spaghetti Monster would know how you retards would react to comments made in such a direction.

  13. I find it extremely hysterical that every single comment on this blog is willing to call this move stupid (note that I said move and not movie, I’m not making a typo).

At the same time, over 90% of the comments contain egregious spelling errors and a serious lack of information — in terms of post production 3D — simply being fueled by poor people nerd raging.

9 months is plenty of time to create proper post-production 3D. Remember ‘Clash of the Titans’? They decided to do post production and spent about two months ruining the movie to rush 3D crap into the film.

Loosen up your wadded underwear. Stop complaining. You have a third option, go make your own movie. The fourth option would be to pretend you have a life and not care about trivial bull***t. A fifth option would be to spend some money on a 3D experience that might end up being enjoyable.

This same argument goes for anyone who hates on Transformers movies or Abrams’ Star Trek.

Get a life and stop complaining on the internet that you don’t want to pay additional dollars/euros/pounds for a 3D experience. If you don’t want to pay for it, don’t pay for it. Put a fresh tampon in and stop complaining to those of us who enjoy it.

    • You are the high and might king of the mountain, oh user of big words… Seems like you spend your day reading G.I. Joe complaints and then trying to sound like you are above such a thing. The LOL is on YOU my friend.

    • You seem a bit touchy touchy on this. Do you have a relative who works at Paramount that has you on the defense on this 3D bullcrap?

    • If you’re done with a movie and spent all sorts of money to promote it and get everyone hyped up then why push it back 9 months? It is a stupid move because who gives a crap about it being 3D at this point? Movie is either going to be one of two things: good or bad. 3D is not going to change that. If they want to release it in 3D that is fine but just go ahead and release the finished 2D when its suppose to be released then re-release it in 3D next year. Go back to your throne which is obviously the toilet since you’re the only one that gives a crap about the 3D. Oh btw I am not one of the poor raging nerds.

    • yo Mr Dictionary, you seem to enjoy some big and ominous words so here are a few for you,

      1. Egocentric (meaning: TWAT)
      2. Contemptuous (Meaning: TWAT)
      3. Ostentatious (meaning: TWAT)
      4. Presumptuous (meaning: TWAT)

Those four should suffice you sad little ignoramus!

  14. SOMEONE LEAK THE MOVIE OUT ONLINE PLEASE!!! Stupid move Paramount. Incredibly stupid move. You’re killing this G.I. Joe movie before it even gets released.

  15. Whatever their reasons, the timing is peculiar. It seems a bit like last minute navel-gazing and doubt about the finished product.

  16. Look on the bright side… at least it’ll be a proper post conversion job.
It’s better than having to watch a rushed/botched 3D conversion that just makes your eyes sore.

Still, I can’t see how it would take almost 8 months to do a conversion… something else must be going on here (maybe they’re afraid of the competition this year?)

    • Yes, sounds like a bad case of “all the good parts being in the trailer” to me! And I caught some footage that looked like cheese harkening back to the Rise of the Cobra, and not in a good way AT ALL!

  17. I don’t care about this movie, but this looks like an excuse to pull a movie they aren’t confident in. There’s too much competition this year.

    • I think you’ve nailed one half of it, yes indeed.

    • Completely agree.

    • I don’t buy this argument. If you’re scared of the competition, delay it a few weeks or a month, not 9 months!

  18. WOW… what a bad move!!! After all the teasers, tarilers, interviews and features now we get nothing until 2013? Who the hell is running things over there?

  19. I’m just glad I don’t have to see channing gaytum ruin another movie for a while.

  20. This is stupid, just show the movie!

  21. I could accept the nine month delay if they also spent those months making the first movie not suck. Otherwise, I’m completely enraged and will also not be watching in 3D simply on principle.

  22. This has nothing to do with 3D and everything to do with the failure of Battleship ! These guys are afraid Joe will get overwhelmed by the summer’s big guns like Avengers, Amazing Spider Man and Dark Knight Rises. Oh and then there’s MIB 3, Prometheus and Expendables 2 !! If you’re scared, say you’re scared!

  23. Man when did plain old IMAX become not good enough? I’m with Chris Nolan this 3D stuff is for the birds

  24. There is not many movies that impress with using 3D. I saw The Avengers in 3D, I did not notice many things coming right at me. The Last Final Destination movie did it well, but I haven’t been impressed by others. If they are pulling a whole movie out of this movie season; this better be the best 3D we have ever seen. A lot of people were hyped to see GI Joe 2. I don’t know if they will be as hyped next year.

  25. Nooooooo just show us the movie already!!! 3D is not worth the extra $10!!!

  26. Wow this is stupid lol 3D blows and will die out soon

  27. Ridiculous! One more reason I am sick of the 3D fascination, it is not worth it! This was one of my top 3-4 movies to see this summer well above Amazing Spider Man. Only benefit is, it gives me a better opportunity to see another movie in this summer that is just jam packed!

  28. This is bs!! Was looking forward to this and now they push it back cause of 3d..

  29. Good grief!! It doesn’t take that long to convert for crying out loud. And here I was actually wanting to see it. Heaven forbid there be a movie not released in 3D.
