‘G.I. Joe 2′ Pushed Back to March 2013 for 3D Conversion

gi joe retaliation trailer G.I. Joe 2 Pushed Back to March 2013 for 3D Conversion

Here’s an unexpected twist: Paramount is delaying the release date for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, just over a month before the sequel was originally due to hit theaters around the U.S. Retaliation has now been pushed back an entire nine months to a March 29th, 2013 date – where it will face off against The Host during its opening weekend.

The reason for said abrupt delay? Paramount wants to convert the film to 3D, in order to improve its box office prospects overseas.

Deadline quotes an unnamed Paramount head as saying (about Retaliation):

“We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of ‘Titanic’‘s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out.”

The quality of Titanic‘s post-converted 3D has demonstrated that non-native 3D films are not necessarily inferior to those shot in the format – assuming the proper time and effort is invested. Furthermore, there are certain recurring set pieces featured in the Retaliation trailers to date (especially the cliff-side ninja battle) that suggest the sequel could stand to benefit from the added dimension.

Of course, the delay is still disappointing news for everyone who was looking forward to a second G.I. Joe movie – one that appears to be an improvement on its predecessor. Still, considering that Retaliation was originally going to square-off against Amazing Spider-Manjust a few days after its opening here in the States – the move seems to make sense, from a financial perspective.

How does the news about Retaliation being post-converted to 3D make you feel? Sound off in the comments section.

As mentioned before: G.I. Joe: Retaliation is now positioned to hit theaters (in 2D, 3D, and, most likely, IMAX 3D) around the U.S. on March 29th, 2013.

  1. Yo. 1 month before original release date?? How dare they.. Idiots only thinking about cashing as much green as possible.. discusting. Big mistake.. Im going to delay me watching the movie, 9 months. Watch it home, for free.. seriously

  2. This is one of those times I wish i was allowed to swear on screenrant.com

This is complete garbage. VERY VERY VERY stupid movie. Bad call , stupid foolish decision. post conversion 3D really sucks anyway.

How about just tell all the people who want to see it in 3D to wait until next March and let us who don’t care see it NOW like we have been planning all summer

  3. This is so dumb. I think Gijoe and Spiderman could have competed. Spiderman looks ok but not that good. Gijoe was looking really cool. This sucks and paramount is going to lose a lot of money

  4. Uncool, I was looking forward to this one now I have to wait till next year :-(

  5. That word that rhymes with “uckery” comes to mind.

  6. Paramount just shot themselves in the foot. Retarded move delaying this to make it post conveterted 3D.

  7. What about Hasbro’s toyline for this movie???

    • that is an excellent point, since Hasbro had completely stopped the 30th anniversary line in anticipation of the movie line… Any way you go, either delaying the line, or going forward with it without the movie, hasbro, who owns the rights to gijoe, is gonna get screwed sales-wise

    • that is an excellent point, since Hasbro had completely stopped the 30th anniversary line in anticipation of the movie line… Any way you go, either delaying the line, or going forward with it without the movie, hasbro, who owns the rights to gijoe, is going to lose out sales-wise

  8. I don’t mind this.

I mean, lets face it, the movie will compete with The Dark Knight’s media campaign (I’m not even sure when GI Joe was supposed to be released in the UK other than “July”) so that helps this movie.

It’s also a bonus for WWE who can use GI Joe promotion on their own shows since it’s rumoured that The Rock will have another Wrestlemania match next April.

  9. The Avengers changed everything, the market is different. There’s a billion dollars already gone. They would’ve taken like a 40% reduction in box office or worse.

But bad!!!! Very Bad men! Very bad studio execs, feeling backlash now eh? Snake Eyes deserves better than this!

    • You are correct indeed. Comparing last years last 2 weeks with this years there was a 45% drop in profit from the company I work for. Tho we are only one theatre chain out of a ton that is a massive drop. So expect men and black 3 to be a bust. That being said I think it will pick up a lot around prometheus and snow white

  10. I don’t really fancy 3D, sometimes the glasses are annoying and sometimes the 3D is 1/16 of the movie.3D cost is also too high, where’s the justice…yo Joes…

  11. Oh My God that seems a bit sudden to do with all the promotion, and hype,, I was looking forward to this like everyone here. Its a pity really, it does not matter if its 3D, its the story and the script that is important. Also the quality performance of the actors that make a film, not the added stuff of 3D. 3D done right can work take Avatar, a good script but the story is key, its not good when the faith is on how it looks rather than how it is underneath the layers of effects.

Im sorry to see allot of you let down, look forward to the rest of the summer season, and be glad you can go to the flicks, there really is allot of folk that cant due to all kinds of situations, maybe when you do go to the flicks to see spiderman or what ever, buy an extra ticket and suprise someone you know in need of a kind act who would appreciate going to the movies,, you never know, it could be a friend, a relative that you just dont know is in need of a little lift or someone close to you who you think would benifit a day at the movies. take care

  12. Also weren’t they already marketing this movie for june now they will have to spend more money on 3D and extra marketing for next year right?….Wow…

  13. Go Joe: Direct to Video!

  14. If I was Hasbro, I’d be Pissed

    • Nevermind, read a press release from Hasbro and apparently it was their decision!
      WTF, Hasbro?!?

      • Mayybe Hasbro didn’t want 2 flops in the same summer. *Looking at you, Battleship*

  15. Many will called it stupid or —kery moves but I think from the exec’s POV, I think at least that it is a justified and reasonable move.

If it is bound to open on its original date, it will PROBABLY get slaughtered by Spider-Man. I say PROBABLY because no one will know what sort of box office tracking does these two movies have at the moment. For international markets (like me been outside of the U.S.), local distributors will love to keep a breathing space if there are two “big box office” movies are to be released. For example, that is why Battleship was released two weeks earlier than The Avengers here in Malaysia as well as various part of the world.

The only reasonable move to avoid this scenario is to delay but till when? Since the whole of summer (particularly this year) will be sort of tough in competition, moving it out of summer is the best. I see the trend that Hollywood will treat the month of March as their alternative time to release a movie. Then comes 3D conversion which will be a risky bet because 3D can be a turn-off to some.

What ever the reasons are right now, the studios need to make money because that is how and what this whole movie business is all about – MAKING AND MAXIMIZING MONEY REVENUE. People may not appreciate it and even me myself feeling a little disappointed because the movie has been delayed. I am looking forward for it but I guess we have to wait.

Sorry for the long post, just my POV.

  16. I wonder if Battleship being a bomb to Avengers and Spiderman being released closely afterwards to GI Joe has to do with this, it is the summer of comic book movies. Avengers proved that and really do believe that hurt Battleship’s box office performance. I knew Avengers was going to be big but this big I don’t think anyone expected. Poor Taylor, can’t catch a break.

  17. I wounder if the studio dosnt think it turned out so well so converting it to 3d will help with some of the budget expenses ( higher ticket prices ). Well anyways I think it’s stupid and I hope it’s a slap to the face when the movie comes out and 2d showings sell out more than 3d showings. I mean what did they think the fans wernt gonna get mad cause it’s about a month away

    • or maybe it’s a delay to rewrite some of the scrip and then re-film the rewrites and the 3d conversion is just a way to cover up would could be a not so good movie

  18. And lest we not forget that Hasbro Studios partners with several television and movie studios including not just Paramount(G.I. Joe) but also Universal and Sony. The same Sony that’s distributing Amazing Spider-Man. Essentially they kind of would have competing with themselves.

  19. The Titanic 3D was awful. All it did was expose al the computer effects and make it look like a cheap film.

The studio is confusing the appeal of 3D. Only Avatar and Alice in Wonderland really used 3D as a marketing tool and people went to see them for the 3D. Everything else people were gonna see anyway, regardless whether the 3D turns out good or bad. Usually if given the option of seeing a film in 2D I would, but sometimes I wanna see it so badly I have no choice but to go 3D. Hopefully when this comes out I’ll still be able to see it 2D. I don’t care if the conversion turns out good, it does nothing to enhance the movie.

    • That’s not the point, whether 3D makes the film better or not. It’s all about money, 3D means more money.

  20. For some reason I REALLY thought this was already in 3D.

  21. ok… now they’re already $100mil in the red coz of wasted marketing costs…

  22. I am not going to watch this movie in theater anyway so it doesn’t bother me.

But my condolences for all GI Joe fans, I cannot imagine hyping up for The Dark Knight Rises with a 30-day countdown and all of a sudden they decide to push it back and I have to wait for 270 more days! I would throw eggs at the Paramount office or boycott the opening weekend if I were the fans, who are going to turn up opening weekend next year regardless, which is why execs are so snobby and ignorant

  23. its very simply executives think they know wat we want but they have no idea what we want a 2d version wouldve been ok or at least given the imax 2d treatment i swear they have no idea at all

  24. um….yea this should cheer everyone up, theres a new TDKR tv spot with new footage, and its awesome.

    • Man that was awesome

  25. I am so sad, 9 months? Come on now! This movie looked sweeeet! I didn’t see the first one, but I was really looking forward to this…I guess it always is about the money. Sorry Jessie J…

  27. This is one of the reasons why I hate 3D! It totally takes away from the movie experience in terms of release dates and delays and prices etc etc. I doesn’t really contribute anything at all to the viewing. Kidding Mex? Next year?? They totally jerked around their fans over a few extra bucks.

I don’t buy it. I don’t think they would pull such an obvious jerk move over 3D. It’s cuz avengers is smashing records and spiderman has re hallmarks being another first rate super hero movie. They pulled out the white flag.
