Released in 1984, the original Ghostbusters followed a team of scientists with a ghost-catching business in New York City and the film became a cult-favorite sci-fi comedy. Following a less well-received sequel, Ghostbusters II, a third entry to the series was stuck in development for decades. That is, until Paul Feig (Spy, Bridesmaids) was tapped to direct a Ghostbusters reboot, which will feature an all-female ghostbusting team.
The main cast of Ghostbusters has since been revealed to include Feig’s previous collaborators Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig as well as Saturday Night Live favorites Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Now, Feig has revealed the names of each actress’s characters.
Earlier this week, Feig announced on Twitter that McKinnon will be playing. He then tweeted the names of the remaining main characters. Since production began, the director has been teasing aspects of the new Ghostbusters on Twitter, including the uniforms, proton packs, car and the main cast in their jumpsuits.
Jillian Holtzmann. Now you know. https://t.co/tfsTdTujs3— Paul Feig (@paulfeig) July 17, 2015
Okay, here you go. Erin Gilbert, Jillian Holtzmann, Abby Yates and Patty Tolan. Now you know even more. https://t.co/MsQVo5iStI— Paul Feig (@paulfeig) July 18, 2015
- Jillian Holtzmann (McKinnon).
- Erin Gilbert (Wiig)
- Abby Yates (McCarthy)
- Patty Tolan (Jones).
In addition to directing the Ghostbusters reboot, Feig penned the script with The Heat screenwriter Katie Dippold. Joining the main Ghostbusters in the cast are Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Age of Ultron) as their receptionist, Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Michael K. Williams (The Wire), Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Eleven), comedian Neil Casey among others. Plus, a cameo from original Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd was also recently confirmed.
For those that have been following the Ghostbusters reboot production closely, these names aren’t far off from those released in a report earlier this year. Though the last names of Erin and Abby have since been changed, the first names are all the same. Additionally, it was originally thought that Jones would be playing Jillian and McKinnon’s character would be called Patty.
Despite the confusion, fans are sure to be excited about receiving confirmation on the main cast’s official character names. Additionally, while the previously released images of the new uniforms, car and proton packs of the Ghostbusters have largely shown updated and slightly revamped versions of those that appeared in the original film, the new characters’ names are wholly unrecognizable to fans of the first two movies. Nonetheless, each of Feig’s tweets teasing his reboot are effective in further stoking fans’ excitement for the upcoming Ghostbusters.
Ghostbusters opens in U.S. theaters on July 22nd, 2016.
