The folks over at HoundsTV gave us the heads up that Mr. Raymond Stantz was in Canada this week to help promote his father’s book, A History of Ghosts: The True Story of Séances, Mediums, Ghosts, and Ghostbusters. During the Q&A, reporters were allowed to ask one question and the folks from HoundsTV made the decision any fan would and asked him of the status of his beloved franchise. This time, Aykroyd was not as enthusiastic of its status.
“It’s all talk until I have the following: b117b3x9. That’s a production number. When I see a production number… I know I’m in the picture business again.”
Still, Aykroyd does step in to give another contradiction to Murray’s statement.
“We have a script, but we don’t have a PN (production number) number.”
While it’s not much, it’s something and for fans that have been waiting over 10 years for Ghostbusters 3 to happen, something is good.
Rumor Patrol
With all this Ghostbusters 3 news floating around, you’ve got to expect at least a couple of rumors to come along with it and in this case we’ve got other sites reporting that that Aykroyd, at the same press event in Canada, had stated Ghostbusters 3 is being held up because funds from the studio have “dried up.”
I’m happy to report that after following up with the folks over at HoundTV that this is not the case at all. While they were only allowed to ask Aykroyd one question, they ran into him later and followed up with a question asking him “Does the Hollywood recession or the difficulties studios are having getting money and funding films have anything to do with why Ghostbusters 3 isn’t a go yet?” Aykroyds response to the question was that generally “It has hurt every film” and not Ghostbusters 3 in specific.
Ghostbusters is one of the most important franchises that Sony owns and I’m sure that if everything was in its place, Sony would have no problem writing a check. Especially with the success of Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
So, there you have it. All the Ghostbusters 3 news you could want and more. After spending all this time writing about Ghostbusters, I think I might pop the DVD in. (Although I won’t because this weekend I have to catch up on my Canadian teenage mellow-drama, Degrassi: The Next Generation. I’m 2 seasons and a made-for-TV behind. Just don’t tell anyone. I have a reputation to uphold.)
We’ll make sure to bring Ghostbusters 3 news (and bust any rumors) as it comes.

Around the web:

It sounds like a lot of people are trying make it happen,
but right now it may be more of a high concept then an actual movie.
We shall see .
i just hope Rick Moranis is in as well…
I agree with Murray. The second, while ok, wasn’t up to the standards the first set. I hope the rest of the cast is as committed to making sure its right so that he can be on board, because lets’ face it, without Murray in it, it’s not going to have the chemistry that made the first a classic action comedy.
Dana Barrett plays Cello, not bass, Anthony… I thought you were FAN! She is “the best in her row”
You also misspelled “Venkman” as “Vekeman”, but I will let both of these instances slide because of all the great quotes and easter eggs throughout the article.
@Evan
Haha… you caught me. I purposefully inserted those errors into the piece to find out who the true fans were.
You, sir, are a true fan.
If this were “The Last Straighter,” you’d be Alex Rogan. (“I said, back to sleep Louis, or I’m telling Mom about your Playboys!”)
**That’s the story I’m sticking with… It’s not at all because I’m trying to cover up my mistakes. It’s not like I was just referencing “The Last Starfighter to aid in my ruse. Not at all.
@Anthony
LOL… touche, my friend… touche
You would have really scored points if it had been a Back to the Future reference. You probably just weren’t “thinking fourth dimensionally.”
Rick Moranis quit acting altogether so i doubt he will be in the movie
Just get this green lit!!! All this talk and rumors is like having a cake just out of reach for a fat kid. And hey, I love cake!!!
I don’t blame Murray for being realistic in the sense that a good movie script has been awfully hard to come by nowadays. I refuse to recognize the new Star Wars and Indiana Jones films because they were a joke. Who wants to scar the Ghostbusters image? I know the old schoolers still have spark though. The Ghostbusters video game was pretty epic.
Its my feeling that Bill Murray wont attach until money is behind the script, despite what he is saying. Dan Akroyd is the actor most reliant on the success of this movie, but Bill Murray is the A-list actor who would needs every project he does to matter (Oscar committee give him a damn award already). So he is wary of attaching to early only to have it fall apart.
Though I do think within a few months we will know the real status of G3, this is one of the few movies I won’t be commenting on again, because my hopes and dreams for this movie to happen have been exhausted a long time ago. Its really up to the cast, director, and the production company to make it happen. Though each of the actors and Reitman’s comments point to everyone being hungry for a great film. Which in this day and age is happening less and less in the industry machine/ mass profit environment of modern film.
Last point to be made, what does the potential success of this movie mean? A Ghostbusters franchise restart? Or just a capstone on the franchise as it is?
Whilst I would desperately like to see a Ghostbusters 3, I’d have to agree with Bill Murray’s statement, “It would have to be a really good script”. Rarely is a sequel as good as the original (although it can be done – but that’s another topic). If you’re going for a third installment after a klinker of a second, you need to go back and take a good hard look at why the first was successful. It wasn’t just Bill Murray or Dan Akroyd or Harold Ramus. It was everyone together and the chemistry they had.
For this to work, I think Dan Akroyd could stand to lose a few pounds.
One last point. What’s Harold Ramus’s view on this?
I’m so glad that Ivan Reitman and Bill Murray has the attitude they have. They’re forcing the gang into really making an effort, which is great. Just throwing something together, and bringing Bill Murray along for the ride, like they did with Ghosbusters 2, doesn’t work. He’s either everything, or nothing. He can’t do anything in between. His performance is usually completely flat if he’s not the main man. You can kind of read “I don’t want to be here!!!” on his face.
I’m so glad they see the importance of the original characters and humour. It seems that if it ain’t done right, it’s not going to be done, which is a wonderful starting point. With the statements from Reitman and Murray, I’m getting very confident that if they make this movie, it will be something we all will love. Not just a money-grabbing thing.
After watching Zombieland yeasterday, I really hope Ghostbusters 3 gets made. Those who saw the movie know what i’m talking about.
@Manowar
I saw Zombieland after I wrote this piece. Oh wow, that part was amazing. Nobody told me his cameo would have such a node to Ghostbusters. I almost want to watch the film again just to see that part.
