*Cue Ray Parker Jr. music, synthesizer fades in* “If there’s something strange, in your neighborhood. Who you gonna call?” IVAN REITMAN! “If there’s something weird, and it don’t look good. Who you gonna call?” IVAN REITMAN! *fade to black as camera follows Ghostbusters dancing on Ecto-1 down the streets of Manhattan*

That’s right boys and ghouls (stop rolling your eyes, you know I had to say it), in a interview with MTV last night, Ivan Reitman was asked point-blank if he was returning to helm the third installment of Ghostbusters. His answer was an unequivocal “Yes.” This is fantastic news for fans of the franchise. Ghostbusters is one of the classic comedy films of the 80’s, and even though Ghostbusters 2 wasn’t quite up to the same standard, it did have its high points *cough Sigourney Weaver in her bra cough*

Right before the New Year rolled around, Harold Ramis threw out a tasty, meaty morsel to the blogger lion’s den that Ghostbusters 3 would indeed be shooting in 2010 for a 2011 release date.  Reitman said that writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (Year One) have turned in a rough draft and that the team is working their way through a second draft. Said Reitman:

“They have delivered a draft. We are working our way through another draft… good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed.”

When MTV asked Reitman to address the ridiculous Ghostbusters 3 plot points that Sigourney Weaver let out during a junket for Avatar last month, he pleaded the 5th and changed the subject (he could be a politician).

“I’m not going to comment on what’s in the script and on what Sigourney may or may not have said. She’s been so busy on Avatar, I’ve not been able to find her. There’s some very cool things in the new draft, let’s just put it that way.”

Reitman also confirmed what Ramis said last year: that Ghostbusters 3 would aim for a 2011 release date, “I hope to start shooting in this next year.” Now all we need is for someone to confirm who will or will not be starring in the film. As long as they keep Slimer, I’m good with whomever (whomever being the code name for Alyssa Milano icon smile Ivan Reitman Confirms That He Will Direct Ghostbusters 3 ). Does hearing that Ivan Reitman is returning to direct Ghostbusters 3 excite you or leave you feeling blah?

Ghostbusters 3 has no official release date, but if you read the above article then you know it’s sometime 2011.

  1. Can't wait to see how they will aply today technologie whit the movie. Ta na na na na na na.

  2. I am THERE! Just watched the first one two nights ago with some folks who had never seen it. They, of course, loved it.

  3. I'm all for a 3rd Ghostbusters, but I sure hope it's better than GB2. Please no Seth Rogen…please no Seth Rogen…please no Seth Rogen….

Alyssa Milano…now THAT I am on board with!!

  4. I'm all for this as long as it's better than GB2. I'm REALLY surprised that this isn't just a reboot with all new characters taking on the iconic roles. I'd love to see the whole original cast back. Please Ivan….NO SETH ROGEN!!! That would completely ruin this movie. Alyssa Milano, though, would be a GREAT casting choice!!

  5. I don't know what to believe anymore about this movie. If this is true, which I guess it is, that's awesome.

  6. So now there is one of the 5 oh so important parts in place to make the movie. Just need the other 4, but what could they be……..

  7. Thank you for such wonderful news!!!!

  8. hell yeah!

  9. I'm down for a 3rd one. After playing the game, I wanted more. It's good to see everyone back… even though Ray Parker is now doing jazz, get him to do another theme song :)

  10. Yeah, I just got the game for Christmas. It is loads of fun.

I am really excited for a new story.

  11. One of my my favorite film(s) of all time. Can't wait for this long over due trilogy.

  12. GHOSTBUSTERS ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!! YEAH WOOHOOO!!!!

  13. The new Ghostbusters game is full of glitches and never should've been released on the masses.

    (possible spoiler ahead)

Ghostbusters 3 is supposedly going to have the main villain as a dead peter venkman, him becoming a powerful poltergeist. The overweight, older crew need to enlist Oscar and some young blood to assist, much to the chagrin of Dana, Oscars mom and Venkman's ex.

I think Bill Murray could really sink his teeth into a ghost role, I like the idea. If there's any truth to it.

  14. I know for a fact Bill won't be a ghost. I interviewed Dan Aykroyd for a radio show here in Chicago. We talked for 45 minutes about Ghostbusters 3, most of which was cut by the station for time and content. Believe me, this movie will kick ass, I can say no more.

  15. Ivan – PLEASE PLEASE make it have the eerie elements of the first one – this is what was great about the contrast between that and the comedy. The second one was a bit too “let's be silly the whole way through”. Louis Tully's defence of the team, on the other hand, was great!

  16. I don't care if the original team are all too old and “larger round the middle”, I want to see Venkman, Spengler, Stantz, Zeddmore, Dana, Slimer, Louis and Janine all back for one of the best comedies ever made.
Going to see this as an 11yr old and jumping up and down the ailes in the local cinema, to the shout of “GHOSTBUSTERS” is one of the great memories of my childhood. The second one's not as good but by no means a bad film and I might just have to have a Ghostbusters evening tonight.
This news has got me more stoked than for any other upcoming film release (with maybe the exception of The Hobbit).
