[Update: Notice Anything about our new header image?]

For anyone following the news (and non-news alike) that keeps popping up about Ghostbusters 3, you’re probably aware that perhaps the biggest wrench in the machine (as far as getting the movie into production) is the star of the first two, Bill Murray. It’s been rather ambiguous just what his status with the movie is – will he come back, won’t he come back – for years it was literally anybody’s guess (including Murray’s, probably!).

However, starting last December we got wind of some possible ways that Murray would be featured in Ghostbusters 3, via one of the franchise’s other stars, Sigourney Weaver. [Possible Ghostbusters 3 SPOILERS ahead!] She said that Murray would be killed off at the start of the third movie and be in the rest of it as a ghost. Sounded like a perfect idea in my eyes.

However, at the time people just took what Weaver said as a silly comment of what could but probably won’t happen. That was until Murray talked to the UK Daily Online and said that indeed the writers are going to have him in it as a ghost. Good news for some while others will probably hate the idea…

So where are we now with regards to Ghostbusters 3? Well, the last related item is when Murray went on the Late Show with David Letterman. Below we have the clip of the couple of minutes he chats about the third Ghostbusters. Apparently it’s his, “nightmare… just crazy talk.” Check it out:

It seems to me that Murray is rather sick of all this Ghostbusters 3 talk and wants to just move past it. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t put the needed effort in for his role in the movie but just that he’s literally been hounded for years whenever he does interviews about whether he’s going to do another one and how big of a role he will have in it (and so forth). I’d probably feel the same way if I was him.

I’m just one of the many out there who has been looking forward to another Ghostbusters movie. Even though the second one doesn’t even hold a candle to the first (clearly Murray agrees with me in the clip above), the potential is certainly there for a third one to ramp up the awesomeness to somewhere near the level of the original (I seriously doubt they can match it, though).

What do you think of what Murray says about Ghostbusters 3 in the clip? Surprised to hear him less-than-enthused?

Murray may not be all that interested in going full-on for his role in a third Ghostbusters but that doesn’t stop other people moving ahead: The Office writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg are already working on a script and Ivan Reitman will be back to direct after helming the first two. Presumably Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (who wrote the first two movies) will be back. They’ve talked about the project enough

The plot is said to follow the re-opening of the ghost removal service after years of being closed. And we’ve already known for a while that the movie will follow a younger group of ghostbusters who are trained and mentored by the original team.

Although there’s nothing set in stone, Ghostbusters 3 (in 3D?) could start shooting as early as this year for a release sometime in 2011. More on the movie when we get it.

  1. Who you gonna call?……. NOT Bill Murry

  2. at least he's open to being in it. murray is the man!

  3. at least he's open to being in it. murray is the man!

  4. I just really do not think all of what he said is here……he also said the voice overs on the GB game was alot of fun, and he even did some ad-libbing and Mr. Murry went on to say he was caught humming the GB theme song walking down the street from the recording studio by a couple of passers by who ( we think) were making fun of him to say” it has been 25 years….get over it”. So I think Mr. Murry was being coy at best, which is what he should do seeing as how we have no confirmation of signed contracts, etc. I honestly think he is excited as the rest of us are to see GB3 happen but no yet counting his chickens. ( or jake, aka $$$$$)

  5. I agree. He seemed more coy than totally against the idea. Of course, he did poke fun at GB2 which could mean that he really doesn't want to do another one. Speculating is fun!

  6. I love the Ghostbusters franchise, one of my favorite movies (born in '82). They need the original cast in it though to make it viable. As stated they will be mentoring and teaching a new group of 'busters. So the big question I have is, who would you want to see play the next generation of Ghostbusters? (Pick 4 naturally)

I'm guessing Taylor Lautner would be one since they would grab some of the young crowd whom don't know much about the original Ghostbusters. Probably even Shia LaBeuf. I ain't saying these are my picks, just people I think they will look to cast. I want to see what others think before I make my picks.

  7. Ok is it me or does this kinda sound like the cartoon show “Extreme Ghostbusters” or whatever the name was? I am really looking forward to it.

  8. My guess would be Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson !

Anyway…the clips are not working for me sadly !:( Maybe cause I am in China !

  9. How can you have A Ghostbusters movie without Bill Murray?!

  10. I think its a mistake to kill off Murrays Venkmen character in the first reel, and then
make him a ghost,, say what??? Most fans want a movie that has the blue collar feel
of the original. Have some new actors for the new Ghostbusters, but keep the original Ghostbusters, Peter, Egon,Winston and Ray. in the film. Without that the third film wont be as good as the 2nd film, and that is bad. Making Peter Venkman a ghost is not a good idea, I say again not a good idea.

  11. I think that Bill Murray as a Ghost would be awesome. I think they would have him just as long as he got to slime somebody. I could see him sliming the new recruits and saying “Well that is just something you will have to get used to.”
This movie should have the new recruits in it as well as the original people too. There has to be a passing of the torch. I am sorry but they have all gotten fat and old and it is time to hang up the Proton pack. I mean really. Have you seen Harold Ramis lately. He looks like Slimer. He is due for a desk job. So you bring in 4 new guys and train them in the art of Ghost Catching.
    Seann William Scott- Resident Smartass
    Jessie Eisenburg- The Geek
That is all I have for the moment but you get the point.

  12. Bill Murray has already confirmed on 2-8-10 that he's gonna get killed off in the first reel and come back as a Ghost and he wanted to confirm what Sigourney Weaver said last December 2009. Everyone is in and that's been confirmed from Harold,Ernie,Dan and Bill and Sigourney. Bill even said in this Interview on David Letterman that they found a way to kill him off the producers found a way because Bill said that he'd only return to Ghostbusters 3 that way to have him killed in the first reel and that's Gonna happen. Ghostbusters 3 will still be made after what Bill said because Sony wants to make GB3 along with the GB3 cast and the GB Fans so there's Nothing to worry about because the movie is still going to be made because Harold said that filming will began this Summer/Fall 2010 for a 2011 release he said that on 12-29-09 and Ernie said last October 2009 from Ivan that GB3 will be in Theaters in May 2011. Ernie didn't know what date yet but we will all know soon so the movie is still going to be made!!!

  14. Bill Murray will be in Ghostbusters 3 because he said from his own mouth that he'd return if they killed him off in the first reel and the producers found a way to do that to have Bill return as a Ghost in GB3. Who I'm Gonna Call? Bill Murray with his GB Pals in GB3!! Bill likes the GB3 script just fine Dan said that last Oct.29th 2009. The 2nd draft is due in May 2011, then production will began,Ivan will direct GB3,and filming will began this Summer/Fall 2010 for a May 2011 release and we will soon know what date GB3 will be in Theaters on May 2011!!

  15. I think that with the third film, Why change over the characters of the film, Bill Murray and the other guys are the icons of the films, No different from Arnold not being in the Terminator films. I won,t be the same with different people. I prefer the original cast, And I think it’s silly killing off one of the Iconic cast. Maybe you need to think about the film a bit more before you put it into works !!
