‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ Trailer: Darker, Grittier, Marvel Knight

Most everyone seems to agree that 2007’s Ghost Rider was an underwhelming addition to the comic book movie genre. While next year’s sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, has been touted as something completely different (and, by association, better) than the original, there hasn’t been a whole lot announced about the project that inspires confidence.

However, the footage previewed at the 2011 Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Comic-Con Panel went over well with those in the audience – and now a trailer has been released, offering everyone else an early look at Johnny Blaze’s new (cinematic) ride.

Perhaps the biggest potential asset – and, ironically, reason for concern – for Ghost Rider 2 is the involvement of directing duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (the Crank movies). Their particular breed of action flick tend to boast some of the loopier bits of editing and cinematography you’ll see in a film. Combine that with the fact that Nicolas Cage is reprising his turn as dark-haired daredevil Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider in Spirit of Vengeance and you have to wonder: is there maybe too much crazy talent involved with this sequel for its own good?

No point in delaying any longer – get your first look at Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (via iTunes Movie Trailers) below:

One thing is certain: Spirit of Vengeance will definitely look like a completely different movie than its predecessor. Even the visual effects used to bring its flaming skull-headed protagonist to life are slicker and more refined. The digital format and bits of frantic editing glimpsed here are right on par with Neveldine and Taylor’s Crank movies, which may or may not translate that well into 3D – though some sequences (like the trailer bit where a car literally crashes into the camera) should prove effective. Just don’t go overboard with having Johnny whip his chain around, okay boys?

There’s not a whole lot revealed about the plot here, but Spirit of Vengeance is said to involve Blaze being in self-imposed exile, when he is approached by a monk named Moreau (Idris Elba) to protect a mother and son from a sinister figure named Roarke. We also know that the villainous Blackout will be involved in all this somehow, and that Blaze eventually loses his powers, forcing him to find (say it with us)… the strength to become a real hero.

Neveldine and Taylor have always been more about flashy action, not thematic substance, and so far Spirit of Vengeance looks like it won’t break that trend. David S. Goyer collaborated with Scott M. Gimple (FlashForward) and Seth Hoffman (Prison Break) on the script for the film – which is good news, since Goyer does his best work when collaborating with others. Hopefully, this crew haven’t bent the classic Ghost Rider comic book mythology so much that it’s broken.

  1. looks badass

  2. It looks great but I’m not really liking this bike I like the one from the first one

  3. they cold change the bike to be like the irginal. obviously if ur gonna adapt a hero to big screen then get the right director cast and composer. make it right.. it pises me off that plp simply choose to get lazy and think that they can get away from it. trailer looks betetr then the forst but change the bike and i mite watch this…

  4. I don’t even have words for this…I’m appalled, I’m horrified, I’m sad, I have been Nic Caged.

Why does GR have a black skull? Never had one in the comics.

    Better Question

Why does Nicolas Cage keep getting work? Does no one else see how bad he is?

    Wait is he a scientologist?

    • his skull isnt black, its just charred from being on fire. it looks much better than the way he was portrayed in the original, comes off as more real world appearance than campy. nic cage is hit and miss. he’s done some flops, but has also been highly praised. he just needs the proper role to shine. i loved him in kick-ass.

      • i loved him in Face Off. and he was honestly the 2nd best part of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the best part being Alfred Molina :)

  5. #$!$ing Amazing.

  6. I’d love to see a Blade/Ghost Rider movie. Vampires, demons, and whatever else would have to meet that tandem. Hey! Maybe they could fight the Twilight kids! You’re damn right it’s gonna be a breaking dawn… when Blade breaks your face!

  7. I’ll wait til I see the next trailer, because this one was to much about his backstory.

  8. awsome….

  9. I loved it I can’t wait

  10. Meh looks watchable and on Par with most Marvel films a fun ride that offers nothing particularly great. I’ll watch it I’ll probably moderately enjoy it and then never watch it again.

That said WTF he pees fire in the movie? That’s a bit much

  11. He’s a Biker with a flaming skull for a head……. best idea for a hero EVER!!! But the story will probably let it down as usual.

  12. Hey in Comics he comes GR in night now whats wrong he’s GR on night can someone explain me why is that?

    • Well because it doesn’t matter he can transform from human to ghost rider whenever. The first movie got it wrong.

      • The first movie didn’t get it wrong, they just went with what the old 70’s comics went with. He only became the Ghost Rider at night, when in the presence of evil. Eventually, the rules changed as the comics went on.

Hell, it makes more sense than having to touch a magical gas cap.

    • Agree. What is it with movie makers always feeling the need to put a Jar Jar in there for good measure.
      Looks good though.

  13. Bear Grylls is going to have a hard time swallowing that.

    • HI-YO!

  14. Looks good!

  15. Yup, looks good.

  16. Looks semi-good, I can tell it will receive negative reviews (Don’t all good films these days?) but I have high hopes for it.

  17. What happens when you have to pee when on fire?

What happens when you have to take a dump on fire?

What happens when you have to masturbate and come on fire?

  18. Why do I get the impression in Ghost Rider form he will still come off as comedic just as the first movie, the cartoony sounding voice and laugh, the whistle and his bike comes……
    ……hopefully not.

  19. what first movie? lol.

  20. No matter how cheesy he gets, I just can’t help liking Nic Cage.

    • Nic Cage and Johnny Blaze-Yeah,but not some of that cheesy Ghost Rider we got.

  21. Love it!!! cant wait!

  22. Peeing on fire. They want that to be the last thing you see when you watch the trailer. That tells you everything you need to know about this movie.

    • I know right! My last thought was WTF was that? The obvious answer is the “Crank” guys!

  23. Why do you guys think he is peeing fire he is holding a gasoline hose and the gas that is spraying is on fire. Everyone that think it is his piss there is something wrong in your heads

  24. The last 15 seconds of the trailer is so funny! :-)

  25. The trailer was looking really good, then they screwed up everything in the end….

  26. I’m hoping that last bit with him either pissing flames or simulating it with a gas nozzle is just for the trailer and doesnt make it to the final cut

  27. That looks dumb.

  28. I have always been a fan of the Neveldine/Taylor films. This trailer is RAW with a powerpunch!
