Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance?

ghost rider 2 Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance?

Nearly a year ago it was confirmed that Columbia pictures was in the process of signing writers to pen the sequel to the terribly disappointing Ghost Rider and that Nicolas Cage was set to return of Johnny Blaze. Months later, Cage shared his idea for Ghost Rider 2, revealing that it should be  reboot of sorts. Well, not really a reboot but a different direction for the franchise.

I suppose it didn’t matter, any direction would be better. We also knew that they would be going with an updated version of an older script that David Goyer wrote back in 2001.

Yesterday, Collider reported some details from an exclusive chat with producer Mike De Luca where they talked a lot on the subject of Ghost Rider 2, revealing many interesting details about the movie and its possible title.

You can check out the full transcript of the interview with Del Luca but for your convenience, Frosty summarized the the key points:

  • Mark Steven Johnson is not directing the sequel
  • Eva Mendes will not return as Roxanne Simpson
  • Ghost Rider 2 (or Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance) will be a hard PG-13
  • The film is going to take place in Europe
  • De Luca is open to David Goyer directing the sequel but it all comes down to his very busy schedule
  • The sequel will be like “pushing the reset button” on the franchise
  • As you might expect from the success of Avatar, Ghost Rider 2 might be done in 3D
  • Goyer has just delivered his updated outline to the studio
  • Ghost Rider 2 could easily be in front of the cameras this year

So, it appears the Nicolas Cage got his wish of making the next film more international and less of a western. It’s a good thing that Mark Steven Johnson is not directing but I’m not supportive of the idea of this being done in 3D just for those higher ticket prices. They need to make a better movie first and foremost.

Yes, the possible title of the film is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. For those familiar with the comics, Vengeance is another burning-skull rider who traded his soul to Mephisto so he could hunt down Ghost Rider, who he thought was responsible for killing his family. In the end, he’s a supervillain turned superhero so I’m assuming that’s like a big part of the story of Ghost Rider 2.

If Spirit of Vengeance does begin principal photography this year, the 2011 summer season will explode due to an overload of comic book movies.

It’s hard for me to get excited about this when I really disliked the first Ghost Rider and especially compared to all of the other Marvel Comics-based films coming out.

What do you think of these updates?

  1. Schumacer originally wanted to do Year One but the studio shot him down. Hopefully one day the correct version of Batman Forever will see the light of day. I don’t think it is a bad movie anyway, it’s not the best, but not by any means the worst comic book movie. Val Kilmer had a lot of good qualities as Bruce Wayne.

  2. I enjoyed it at the time! I heard the same about Year One: that could have been interesting, but it just wasn’t the right time. I look at Schumacher’s Batman films as a necessary stage that had to be gone through in order for us to have arrived at Cristopher Nolan. I thought Val Kilmer could have been really something in a sequel given half a chance. The scene that sticks in my mind for all the wrong reasons is that one where they’re suiting up towards the end, and upon the presentation of Mr Kilmer’s rear a bunch of 12-year-old girls in front of us at the cinema literally screamed “VAAAAALLL!!!”.

  3. In the same way that without the lighter Batman of the ’50s and the Camp Crusader of the ’60s, Miller’s ’80s revision wouldn’t have been “necessary”.

  4. I’m all for it.

  5. I walked out of the theater within 30 minutes or an hour of Ghost Rider, and since then I’ve realized that I just hate Nicolas Cage. Am I the only one? I don’t think he’s a good actor. There’s certain “actors” that just bug me.
    1. Nicolas Cage
    2. John Cusack
    3. George Lopez
Those are 3 that I will not go out of my way to see one of their movies. If they’re starring in it, you can count me out.

Back to Ghost Rider… They should do a complete reboot and replace Nicolas Cage with a better (and possibly younger?) actor. I do like the idea of having Vengeance in it, getting rid of Eva Mendes, and making it less “western”, but like I have said (and a few others have said) they need to take out Nicolas Cage. I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t stand him.

  6. @”and since then I’ve realized that I just hate Nicolas Cage. Am I the only one? I don’t think he’s a good actor.”

I don’t hate Cage, but I don’t find him to be a good actor anymore. There was a time when I found him to be a great actor, but his performances of late have been disappointing.

  7. OK? another character thats the same as the main character?????? Lets see ill write it out: spiderman3 (venom) hulk2(abomination) ironman2 (warmachine) wolverine (sabertooth)uhhhhhh really hollywood? Now onto character justice: Venom? LAME! Abomnation? BRUTAL! Doc Oc? awsome! Sabertooth? GAY! Deadpool? a mess in itself! War machine? kinda awsome but imo not needed. silver surfer? TIGHT! Blackheart? SUPER GAY! Vengeance on the big screen? HELL NO! (no pun intended, really!) Ghost rider was awsome on the big screen but they need to give blackheart justice. Render him to look like himself in the comics, NO MOUTH DAMN IT! I thought the movie itself was really fun to watch honestly, but the villians?……………….they freakin suck man, element demons? so lame. dawson’s creek version of blacheart? COME ON! HERE IS SOME ADVICE HOLLYWOOD, KEEP GHOSTY THE SAME AS YOU DID, AND GET MEANER MORE BAD ASS VILLIANS! and play a little deathmetal when ghostrider’s kickin some ass = GOOD MOVIE! And as for Nicolas? Fine w/e i guess were stuck with him but it could be way worse. Besides, LONG LIVE DR.DOOM!

Also i just wanted to say, they told me blackheart was gonna transform in the end of the movie before i saw it, and I was never more disappointed watching a movie in my life. spidy 3 is 2nd.

  8. This is probably pointless information but, at the end of Ghost Rider one Johnny said “That whenever innocent blood is spilled, it will be is fathers blood and I will be there as the Spirit of Vengeance.” Or something like that. Well that was all probably pointless info but anyqay.
