ghost rider 2 release date Ghost Rider 2 Official Release Date

Less than a month ago it was reported that Ghost Rider 2, officially titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, would begin production on location in Romania this Fall. Nicolas Cage would be back as Johnny Blaze, reprising the role of the title character in what he describes as a new and entirely different take on the character and franchise compared to the first movie.

Spirit of Vengeance is being touted as much more international story and will be shot in 3D, helping it differentiate from the post-conversion 3D comic book films in development. Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor will be helming Ghost Rider 2, based off a script by David Goyer. The film is rumored to follow Blaze as he takes on a demon biker gang seeking to resurrect the demon lord Zarathos.

While the first film earned generally negative reviews, it did bank nearly $230 million worldwide and plenty more afterwards on home video, TV, merchandise, etc. Considering the sheer amount of major comic book films slated for release over the next two years, when would Ghost Rider 2 debut and could it compete against the likes of DC Entertainment’s Green Lantern, Batman 3 and Superman, Fox’ X-Men: First Class and Fantastic Four, Marvel’s Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, just to name a few?

Likely not, so it’s unsurprising to see the official release date for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance being set for February 17, 2012. The first Ghost Rider opened in theaters on February 16, 2007, making the release of its sequel on its 5-year opening weekend anniversary.

Although I was very disappointed and unimpressed with the first effort to adapt Ghost Rider, I’m open to seeing what this group does with the sequel. A new take on the franchise is exactly that the doctor ordered.

  1. umm i think you got the date wrong.

which studio is in charge of this movie/franchise, cause if its fox/sony then i’ll just wait for a copy via the internet.

    • the date is almost correct- 2007, not 1997.

      But otherwise a great article.

    • The previous film was under Sony/Columbia. It would seem that this film is also the same distributor or an sub-arm (Tri-Star, Screen Gems) of the studio. It is also worthy to note that the new Spider-Man film (also in 3-D and again under Sony) will be in the same year. The previous Spider-Man film was in ’07.

  2. While the first one had its flaws, I didn’t entirely hate it. I hope Eva Mendes is back, though….:D

I will probably check this out, especially since it’s going to be released before any of the “major” movies of that year.

  3. I hated the first, but I’m willing to give the second a try. It just adds to my excitement over 2012.

  4. marvel is rolling out the movie train in 2011,dc better watch out :)

    • 2012 is gonna be another good year to i predict with a bigger movie train :) THE AVENGERS!

    • Watch out for what? Nicolas Cage in leather?

Marvel might take 2011, but 2012 belongs to Chris Nolan with Batman and the Man of Steel

      • Umm, except for The Avengers, which should also be a huge hit.

2012 should be a GREAT year for fans of comic book films..DC or Marvel!

      • Ghost rider is my favourite movie of all times i really can’t wait 4 the 2nd one. Nicolas cage is the man!!!!

  5. 1997? wtf….

  6. Oh no, NO! NOT A SEQUEL!
Well, as long as Nicolas Cage isn’t involved (hated him in the 1st) and maybe if they improve things we might be able to forget there was ever a first! Here is to hoping the right guys got there hands on it this time.

    • Um, Cage is involved again.

      • DOH…

        • Cage can do it… I honestly think he can pull off a Jonny Blaze… the first one had a written-for-TV kind of feel to it and nowhere near enough action. With better writting (ie. for the fans not to pander to the lowest common denominator) wouldn’t Nick Cage deserve another shot?

          If no, then who?

          • I think Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester from Supernatural) would be a GREAT Johnny Blaze.

  7. Um,…. well, while the First one was not all bad, (not all that good either),and I don’t think Nicolas Cage is a bad actor, He IS NOT right for the part of Johnny Blaze. He looks NOTHING like him, and Eva Mendes, (we shall NOT mention her so called acting),also looks NOTHING like Roxxane Simpson. So,.. I’m not too sure about this. I think I smell another dissapointment comming. Also,…. Zarathos, WAS the Ghost Rider!!!

    • Agreed…ALL POINTS!

    • I believe Zarathos was a separate entity and the Ghost Rider was created when his spirit was trapped in a mortal form like Johnny Blaze or Dan Ketch… at least according to marvel’s site. So maybe summoning zarathos would separate the two?

  8. I can’t wait for the movie! I think it will do the character some justice and help right the wrongs from the first movie. And yes, you said 1997 and I’m thinking you meant 2007 hahahaha

  9. I enjoyed the first one wasnt flawless and cant really judge someone on there acting since im not on actor.

  10. Just checked my calender, I am busy that day. If only Cage was not back I would love to see this.

  11. I thought the first was enjoyable and Nic Cage in my opinion a good fit so I’ll give the sequel a watch.

  12. Meh. I check it out on bootleg. I’ll spend my money with “Marvel Studios” Marvel characters only.

  13. Oh NOOOOOOO!!! Not more Cage chewing up the scenery, the script, and the screen!!! GHAAAAAA!!!

  14. Man that first movie bugged me so much because it didn’t have to be as bad as it was. So much melodrama, weak casting, and just weirdness that didn’t work on screen at all.

I’m still a fan of the character so I’ll give it a shot, but the 3D in Resident Evil was also “shot in 3D” so I have no faith in 3D quality anymore.

  15. I don’t get the hate for Nicolas Cage. I have enjoyed most of his movies. For the most part they’re fun, action flicks. I loved The Rock, Face/Off, Con Air, The Italian Job and both of the National Treasure films. Generally, I think Nic Cage in an action flick is a GOOD thing.

    • The Italian Job?

  16. Andy while I don’t like all the films you listed I agree that Nic Cage does not deserve the hate. I especially don’t understand how he could be called a bad actor. I love love love Leaving Las Vegas it’s an amazing film and every time I watch it I can’t help but wonder how any one could bash his acting. That said I think he needs to up his standards in film selection because he makes some awful choices. I like cage but I hate most of his films especially National Treasure yuck.

    I like
    Leaving Las Vegas
    Raising Arizona
    Lord of War
    Matchstick Men
    Ghost Rider
    Con Air
    and Kick Ass

  17. A sequel to this movie is just wrong, but it might become a decent flick if Nick Cage is NOT in the sequel. I don’t hate Nick Cage, but he keeps ruining good movies somehow. Maybe the many haircuts he has had or the roles that he plays or just maybe he’s out of talent?

  18. Wow, you all really didn’t like Nick eh?
I dig that the guy doesn’t look like Jonny Blaze, but was it really Cage who put the first one on its ear?

Looks aside, who better (in Hollywood) personifies that Blaze attitude?

  19. i like they are still using Johnny Cage has ghost rider but i need 2 talk about the new Villains in this up coming movie

  20. Can’t wait

  21. Could the public have the story line facts and not the critics “opinions”? I not only liked the movie I also collected the original series, when I was a kid. This movie critique proves my point. See the show and make up your own mind, everybody.
