Pilou Asbæk joins Ghost in the Shell
Pilou Asbæk is joining the cast of Ghost in the Shell, reuniting the actor with his Lucy co-star Scarlett Johansson in the Rupert Sanders-directed film. The film — based on the long-standing international sci-fi franchise — centers on a female special ops cyborg leading a Hanka Robotics group called Section 9 with the mission of taking down criminal element.
Asbæk will play Batou, the best fighter in Section 9 and the army’s second-in-command. He has previously appeared in Borgen and The Borgias and will appear in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. Ghost in the Shell is currently set to hit theaters on March 31, 2017.
Ip Man 3 trailer features Mike Tyson
A new trailer has just been released for Ip Man 3, the much-anticipated latest entry in the Donnie Yen franchise focusing on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man. The film — directed by Wilson Yip — chronicles Master Ip’s conflict with a group of gangsters and a corrupt property developer with plans to take over the city.
In addition to Yen’s return to the title role, the new film stars boxing legend Mike Tyson, Zhang Jin, Bryan Leung and the Yip’s pupil Bruce Lee, who will be recreated through the use of CGI. Ip Man 3 will be released to U.S. theaters on January 22, 2016, following its Hong Kong release in late December.
Amazon acquires the latest from director Nicolas Winding-Refn
Amazon Studios has acquired The Neon Demon, the latest film from director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives) for a U.S. theatrical release in summer 2016. The deal marks one of the first acquisitions for Amazon’s new banner, which will release Spike Lee’s new film next month.
The Neon Demon centers on an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles and faces a group of beauty-obsessed women desperate to rob her of her youth and vitality. Elle Fanning, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, and Jena Malone are among the ensemble cast.
Matthew McConaughey to star in Illumination Entertainment’s Sing
Universal and Illumination Entertainment (Minions) have announced that their upcoming animated feature centering on a singing competition will be titled simply Sing. The film — directed by Garth Jennings (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) — will center on a group of anthropomorphic animals and feature 85 songs.
The film features a star-studded voice cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton and Tori Kelly. Sing will follow Illumination’s next theatrical release, The Secret Life of Pets, when it arrives in theaters on December 21, 2016.
Sony releases the Miracles from Heaven trailer
Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for Miracles from Heaven. The film, inspired by a true story, centers on a young girl who recovers from a rare, incurable disease after a freak accident gives way to a miracle that inspires the community and restores her family.
Based on the book by Christy Beam, Miracles from Heaven stars Jennifer Garner, Kylie Rogers, Martin Henderson, John Carroll Lynch, Eugenio Derbez and Queen Latifah. The film — directed by Patricia Riggen (The 33) — hits theaters on March 18, 2016.

Paramount announces new release dates, including Spongebob Squarepants 3
Paramount Animation has announced release dates for several upcoming films, including The Little Prince. The film is the first animated adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s iconic masterpiece. Monster Trucks — which features a combination of live-action and computer animation — has been pushed from March 18, 2016 to January 13, 2017.
Meanwhile, the untitled Spongebob Squarepants 3 will hit theaters on February 8, 2019, though no plot details are available at this point. Amusement Park will follow on March 22, 2019, with a cast that includes Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Garner, Jeffrey Tambor, Kenan Thompson, Ken Jeong, Mila Kunis and John Oliver.
