First Look: Gerard Butler in ‘Machine Gun Preacher’

Last month, we learned that Lionsgate had acquired the distribution rights to Machine Gun Preacher, the story of ex-biker and reformed drug dealer, Sam Childers. The film, starring Gerard Butler and directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace), revolves around Childers’ efforts to establish an orphanage in Sudan.

Today, we have some of the first images of Gerard Butler as the ex-biker. In real life, Reverend Childers is an incredible badass. Then again, you pretty much have to be if you’re job is to lead armed missions into Lord’s Resistance Army territory to rescue orphans.

The images first appeared on Just Jared and, while they’re not as badass as Childers’ himself, they certainly give us an idea of what Butler will look like in the role.

I’m sure that Childers actually did wear leather vests (he was a biker after all) and he probably also rocked a pseudo-mullet. But, personally, seeing Gerard Butler in the same outfit doesn’t inspire much confidence. Maybe when they put a machine gun in his hand, he’ll look cooler.

Check out the images below.

Putting aside Gerard Butler’s hair in these pictures, the premise of Machine Gun Preacher actually sounds pretty interesting. The fact that it’s a true story, and that it co-stars the lovely and talented Michelle Monaghan, makes it even more appealing.

Despite his penchant for taking on ill-conceived romantic comedies, I think Gerard Butler is a pretty good actor. He does action well – though he’s not just an action star. He is well-suited to play Sam Childers, and despite my lukewarm response to the photos, I’m hopeful the movie is going to turn out well.

Machine Gun Preacher is currently filming in Detroit and will then head to South Africa. The movie’s anticipated release date is September 11th, 2011.

  2. no offense to the pansy chick flick lovers out there:)

  3. uhm.. yeah.

  4. Gerard’s been doing some stinkers lately (Gamer, The Bounty Hunter). I’m hoping this is a good one (The Phantom of the Opera, 300, The Ugly Truth)

  7. i like butler (when he’s not in chick flicks)….looks good!

  8. Hopefully it will also put some spotlight on the Preachers real life work/efforts with Orphans. Too often good deeds and men go unappreciated and or exploited by corrupt organizations (like government) when the face of the media is not routinely on them.

  9. the story should be a good one its going to be somewhat inspirational obviously. We’ll just have to see how this one pans out. I like Gerard, I even thought Gamer was pretty good. As far as the chick flick thing I’ve been drug to a few even had to watch a few on my own couch!!! It helps when the guys not a cheese eating, spineless, honeydew list killer!!! The couch helps alot too zzz..zzzz…umm,..yah,.great movie babe!!

  10. HEY! I loved “PS I Love YOU” Maybe some of you macho men would benefit from watching a few “chick flicks”. Divorce rate might just drop if you would actually find out what women think!

    • Maybe if you spent more time making me a sammich then the divorce rate will drop.

      • You two are a hoot! Love it! ;-)

  11. So is this a romantic comedy? Judging by the hair, I would say yes

  12. lol that is some hair-do but

  13. I will watch anything with Gerard Butler stinker or not!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Bless Childer’s for the light he has brought to the Sudan. May we keep shedding light in the dark. It is a delight to see Hollywood used as a positive instrument on ocassion.

  15. Gerard Butler is always and will be the screen’s most handsome and charismatic leading men of all screen history. There is none to beat him to date. How fortunate for us that he came along. He is tall dark and handsome. What more can you ask from a leading man? He needs to do some more serious drama or action flicks, that is where he shines the most. How about more gladiator movies Gerard? How about an incredible love story? You were born to be a star, that no one can deny.

  16. All I have to say is,move over George Cloony,Gerard Butler has arrived.

  17. My son and my self and freind’s were extras when they were filming in Melvindale at the trailor park were the tornado part was filmed . my son was an extra when the airport part was being filmed at the airport in Romulus at the old macnamar part of the airport. It was fun and a once in a life time chance to be in a major motion picture, I just hope we don’t end up on the editing floor instead of the big screen, anyway it was great to have been part of it all!
