Is George Miller Planning Two New Mad Max Films?

George Miller has been working on a fourth installment of the Mad Max franchise for the better part of a decade. The film was originally set to star Mel Gibson in the role that made him famous, but age and personal troubles appear to have waylaid these plans. Now British actor Tom Hardy (Inception) is now set to slip into Mel’s old leathers for the next film in the 30-year-old franchise.

We all expected that we’d eventually see the next Mad Max film (subtitled Fury Road) but it now appears that Miller intends to start shooting two Mad Max films back to back!

Twitch appears to have acquired the scoop that states Miller will be helming two post-apocalyptic action movies – one with the well known title Mad Max: Fury Road, while the other will be called Mad Max: Furiosa (is it just me or are there shades of Vin Diesel’s Riddick franchise here?).

Little is known about this fifth Mad Max adventure (or the fourth for that matter). We do know that the Fury Road is supposed to be a sort of franchise reboot and it seems that Furiosa will continue this tale. Twitch says that the fifth film would have a rapid release hot on the heels of Fury Road.

Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz, Adelaide Clemens and Nicholas Hoult are set to join Hardy in Fury Road, which is due to start filming in the next few months; the film has a nine-month shooting schedule (pretty long for a single film). Hardy is currently getting in shape for the film(s), which should be a pretty intense experience due to the sheer volume of stunts, as Miller plans to go the practical route, rather than relying on CGI.

The plot for both films has been kept under wraps for the last few years – which is pretty amazing considering the way that movie news leaks out in this day and age. I can only assume that there will be plenty of chases, races and violence. That is unless they go for PG-13 Mad Max films, which is kind of like having a PG-13 Die Hard movie. Oh, wait a minute…

Screen Rant will keep you updated on all Mad Max developments as they happen.

  1. thunderdome was PG-13…

  2. i dont think i’ll be seeing the 4th, or even 5th, i realize gibson is aging, but to recast the iconic role of max, is downright blaspheny

  3. I don’t know if I can watch the old Mad Maxes knowing what I know about Mel. He’s a complete arsehole! I love the Road Warrior, but I might start cheering for Wez and Lord Humongous.

      • I hear what you are saying, but come on. I’ve seen him lash out at a Jewish film reviewer because the man was asking a legitimate question about the public’s acceptance of Mel in Edge of Darkness. Celebrity is a two-edged sword. Mel enjoyed the good side of celebrity. Now when he says very stupid things (and in public) he gets the bad side of celebrity. You’re right, I don’t know him. But we don’t really know any celebrity. Perhaps Paris Hilton is the most intelligent person I could ever meet. If that’s the case, then her PR team is doing a lousy job. Maybe Mel is the salt of the earth, but he is doing a lousy job promoting that side of his personality.

  4. would rather see an aging mel play and aging max, seriously, are they gonna go the bond route and switch out actors now with this iconic character?

  5. Regardless of Mel’s persona and past, I still like the character of Max, the universe of Max, and would like to see continue on even for one movie, especially since George Miller is deeply involved, and bless him for staying away from cgi. I shall trust Miller to do it justice.

  6. no mel=makes for a bad mad max film

  7. Mel’s an equal opportunity hater. Over the years Ive noticed there’s nary a group, profession, or culture which he hasnt given the Archie Bunker treatment lol.

  8. Could Fury Road be a prequel, taking us back to a time before things took a turn for the worse in “Mad Max?” Perhaps even prior to his marriage to Jessie? I guess it’s possible to look for clues. Any female leads and what are they doing in the show? OH, hello Charlize Theron. Well she’s got enough acting credit to play a future Mrs. Max, yeah I know Max’s last name is Rockatansky, let me just have this one OK πŸ˜‰

Perhaps after these two Gibson would be back if they make enough money. A new world sheriff helping some town folk build a better future…

  9. Mel was in Thunderdome and that film was plain awful, only Angry Anderson made it bearable.

    • well what did u expect from a pg-13 sequel. hell what anyone expect from pg-13 sequels

  10. As many have said, I would rather see an aging Mel play an aging Max.

However, I am not against a recast but if that’s the case, then just reboot the series and start it fresh from the beginning with Max first joining the force. There is a lot of pre-story to Max and his time on the force that we have never seen.

Either way, if this is all true, I am one happy camper. Max has been my iconic movie favorite since childhood. Road Warrior has always been my comfort movie, I still watch it to this day at least once every 6 months. I just watched it in true HD for the first time a while back and was skeptical being an older movie but I have to say wow, the sharpness and colors of the HD version almost made it a whole new movie experience for me. (and that’s saying a lot considering I have seen it 5+ dozen times) There was so much more little details that came shining through.

    • he isnt way too old to play max, ford pulled off an aging jones, despite that movies silly story line

  11. I’m on board. Anything for more Mad Max. Especially with Miller at the helm and promising to go old-school for the stunts and action sequences.

  12. If the film was to become a reboot they could try sourcing the novel of the original movie that was written by Terry Hayes, George Millar and Brian Hannant. This added more backstory and depth to the characters and featured scenes regarding the Armalite Crazies creating carnage on the Transcon One and the formation of the Breaker Squad, 89 members and 40 high-powered cars designed by the Central Bureaucracy to take on the gangs. There was also more scenes between Max and the Goose and more of the wonderful Sgt Macafee. Filmed page for page Mad Max Fury Road would be one hell of a ride.
