George Clooney As The Lone Ranger?

Published 7 years ago by , Updated September 12th, 2013 at 9:32 pm,

When news broke earlier in the week that Johnny Depp would be playing Tonto in Jerry Bruickheimer’s The Lone Ranger, quite a few people thought that it would be difficult to find an actor to ride along side Depp and hold his own as the iconic titular character.

Now Ain’t It Cool has a scoop saying that George Clooney has shown a keen interest in the role of The Lone Ranger. However, would the blockbuster-shy Clooney be interested in starring in such a blatantly commercial film?

Keep reading to find out.

While Clooney has starred in such commercial fare as Batman and Robin (eek!), The Perfect Storm and the Ocean‘s movies, he has usually chosen artier films and put quality of material above the paycheck. Clooney likes to surround himself with top tier cast and crew, and I feel that he could be persuaded to team with Depp, who is also an actor that walks a very thin line between art and commerce.

The casting of Clooney would be ideal: He has the all American good looks to play the masked avenger (didn’t he already play one of those) and he would make one heck of a dynamic duo with Depp (again, hasn’t he been here before?). Although, the pair are knocking on a bit (both are well into their forties), could the film be about an older and wiser Lone Ranger and Tonto?

Time will tell if Clooney does choose the role, and the choice will probably come down to the script. If he does decide to saddle up Silver, we can assume that the film will be a pretty big hit. Johnny Depp and George Clooney in a Bruickheimer-produced The Lone Ranger film could be the first western that has a bigger female attendance than male, and if it’s got that Disney sheen, then the sky is the limit.

How long before the title of this thing changes to The Lone Ranger and Tonto?

  1. I agree with the last statement Niall, even though I hadn’t even thought about it. With Johnny Depp as Tonto, he’d definitely get his name in the title.

Maybe they’ll go for something completely different? Instead of using the title character’s names, I mean. Then again, with the companies behind it ( and it being marketed towards commerce ) they’ll probably keep it blunt.

  2. Cooney is very interested in the film.
Bruickheimer is not interested in him.

Jerry has approached Aaron Eckhart for the role.
Echart is excited at the prospect and
    Depp is enthusiastic and lobbying
    for the casting of Aaron.

  3. I thought Clooney would make a great Ranger years ago when he was up for the Green Hornet. I know he is the stand up kind of guy that Clayton Moore would have liked to pass the mask on to. Picturing him in Moores outfit works for me.

  4. Clooney as the Lone Ranger? A little bit weird I think…

As for them being “older and wiser” I don’t remember The Lone Ranger or Tonto looking particularly YOUNG and Depp most definently looks younger than he is. I think that was a dumb comment.

  5. wouldn’t it be cool if somehow, this turned out to be a violent/gritty/suspense movie?
it’s kinda fun to think about movies being incredibly violent and different from the source material. I have that view on a couple of movies, like if they made the new Evil Dead movie really scary.

  6. Sherlock Holmes
    The Lone Ranger
I’ve SO, left those stories behind!!!
I seriously can’t believe there’s an audience for these fims ???

After watching all 3 seasons of Deadwood, the Lone Ranger seems like a joke, a comedy…
Hearing Clooney say, “Hi Ho Silver Away” should be hilarious.
The Indian purists are gonna have a field day with Depp, as Tonto.

You guys want to see a good western with Depp, rent “Dead Man”. Here’s some of the cast:
    Lance Henriksen
    Alfred Molina
    Crispen Glover
    Iggy Pop
    John Hurt
    Billy Bob Thornton
    Jered Harris
    Micheal Wincott
    Gabriel Byrne
    Robert Mitchum
Soundtrack by some guy named Neil Young.

Lone Ranger,,,? Clooney your such a retard !!!!

  7. Ah, George Clooney as The Lone Ranger… Does that mean the villain is some oil tycoon and the corrupt sheriff will be someone named Jorge Boosh, or maybe he will save the super intelligent and superior “ahead of the curve” celebrities from us lowly “normal” people?

    Yah, can’t wait for that…

  8. George Clooney is the last person I would associate with the Lone Ranger. He would make the movie tank.

The question is, is there ANY actor left in Hollywood pro-American enough to believably fill the role?

  9. For the record, Depp is half Cherokee.

  10. I believe Gary Sinice is a pretty good guy, but wouldn’t look right for the role. Robert Duvall, Bruce Willis… hm, that’ll be something, Bruce Willis as The Lone Ranger, lol.

Oh, how about Tom Selleck? He’s done westerns before, he would be great as the Lone Ranger.

  11. The Lone Quigley, I can see it now…

  12. Clooney as the Lone Ranger?I hope to God not!

  13. I’m no Clooney fan but I did like “The Perfect Storm”. I may check it out but only if Vic says so. :-)

  14. Catherine Zeta-Jones would make a purrfect Lone Ranger, she has riding and fighting experiences from her Zorro movies. She would look stunning in a Clayton Moore cowboy outfit.
