Geoff Johns Green Lantern Geoff Johns Describes Green Lantern Set Visit

No single individual has done more to define Green Lantern for the modern era than DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, so it’s no surprise to learn that he is keeping a close eye on the development of the upcoming Green Lantern film. In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Johns described his most recent set visit and his overall impressions of the film so far.

Discussing everything from the look of the film to Ryan Reynolds’ performance as Hal Jordan, Geoff Johns had nothing but positive things to say.

“The movie looks fantastic. I’m heading back down to New Orleans in a few weeks, but I just watched the Abin Sur/Hal Jordan dailies, and it’s amazing seeing that ring passed to Hal in live action. Abin Sur looks kick-ass.

They did such a great job. They’ve got Grant [Major] as a production designer. He’s from “Lord of the Rings,” and the visuals on this film are nothing like you could imagine. It’s definitely a Green Lantern fan’s dream. For me, it’s kind of insane to see this stuff come to life.

And Ryan Reynolds is a perfect Hal Jordan. He brings a lot of humor to it, but he also has the humanity that Hal has. And a little bit of the arrogance, so it’s a great match.”

After a panel at this past weekend’s Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, I was able to speak with Johns briefly about Reynolds’ performance, and he again offered praise. Johns cited Reynolds’ longtime love for the character and sense of humor as two elements that are helping to define his performance.

Interestingly, in the interview Johns did not mention his thoughts on the recent news that Green Lantern’s costume would be entirely computer generated. However,┬áin discussing the news recently on Twitter, he enthusiastically remarked “The rumor is that Ryan’s #GreenLantern uniform will be CGI — hell, yeah it will be! Generated from his ring in Ivan Reis-like glory!! :)” (For non-comic book readers, Ivan Reis is a DC comics artist who most recently illustrated Geoff Johns’ popular Green Lantern series, Blackest Night.)

Frankly, I have never been a huge Green Lantern fan, but I have to say that everything I’m hearing about this movie has me excited. With Reynolds anchoring the cast (which also includes the terrific Mark Strong as Sinestro) and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell behind the camera, it’s hard to see how the movie could go wrong.

What do you think of Johns’ remarks? Where does Green Lantern fit on your most-anticipated movies list?

  1. I am a Green Lantern fan from way back, as far back as seeing him on super friends!! I love the character so much that he is tattooed on my right arm along with: Batman, Superman, Krypto, Flash and Wonder Woman =) I saw the animated movie first flight and loved it. When news of a live action movie surfaced i went nuts!! First i thought all the merchandise that will be released, good lord im gonna be broke!!! Then i heard about the actors, and with reynolds i thought not bad, not my first choice but not bad. Not thrilled about blake lively as carol ferris at the moment, but that could change. The CGI Suit, well if it makes Hal look that much more badass, im certainly going to give it a look!! I will be the geek in the back of the theater, geeking out over every little cool bit especially when they recite the oath of the Green Lanterns =) Hey dont knock it…i geeked out in X3 when beast was shown!!

  2. I'm a realist and a fan from the old days of comics. I have been pleased with many of the superhero movies to date and have to honestly say that I am more psyched about GL coming to life as I am about THOR. I'll not participate in any badmouthing of this attempt to bring my favorites to life as I expect nothing but magic from those in charge. Whatever course they decide to take, I will back them. I'm happy with the news thus far so go with my blessings.

  3. I totally forgot Mr. Goldeneye and Casino Royale himself was directing. That can only mean good things for this movie.

  4. I'm iffy on Ryan Reynolds in the role, but I love Martin Cambell and Mark Strong, so I'm very optimistic this movie's gonna rock all kinds of hell!

I'm still more eager to see the Marvel movies tho :P

  5. I read Green Lantern way back in 60's, and I suspect he's always been my favorite superhero. Though I read Marvel Comics, particularly Spiderman (from issue #1), I've always favored the DC brand of things. It's great seeing them all coming to life.
