Genshin Impact contains a massive amount of content from story to co-op, to dungeons, and much more. Everything takes place within a beautifully crafted world. Beyond combat and exploration, the game includes an impressive amount of characters within its roster. In total, there are currently 32 playable characters with even more on the way. With so many unique characters, some players may forget about the two that started it all: the Traveler siblings.

While Genshin Impact gives the choice of naming the Traveler, players can opt-in to follow the lore set out by the game and keep the original name of their chosen twin. The default names of the twins are Aether and Lumine. The male twin is Aether, and the female twin is Lumine. For those who like to stick to the canon of the game, choosing between male or female doesn’t alter the story in any meaningful way beyond how NPCs refer to the twin.

At the very beginning of Genshin Impact, players watch a cutscene of the two twins battling the Unknown God, who some speculate is Paimon, the player’s emergency food. During this battle, players must decide between the female or male twin. Once chosen, players can name the twin however they’d like before being thrust out into the exotic world of Teyvat.

Genshin Impact Gameplay

As players progress through Genshin Impact's story as their chosen twin, the world will unfold into an epic adventure as the Traveler seeks to find their lost sibling in the massive unknown world that they’ve been transported to. Players can use the Traveler to help deal with problems around the cities they’ve discovered, like Mondstadt and Liyue, which will lead to a cutscene in which players see the Traveler’s twin working with the enemy: the Abyss Order.

It’s still unclear whether the other twin is working with the Abyss Order of their own accord, or if they’re controlling them, so players will have to see where that story goes as more updates get released. In the meantime, the Traveler will scour the lands of Teyvat in a group of four trying to discover any information about the missing twin. Unfortunately, the Traveler’s usefulness starts to become obsolete as more characters are acquired in the roster later in the game. Even with the Traveler’s unique ability to absorb and change the element they’re using, they can only currently use Anemo (Air) and Geo (Earth), other characters that specifically specialize in those elements are much better suited for a spot on the four-person team. So while Aether and Lumine may be shown throughout story portions, many players won't see them in action as they increase their Adventure Rank and level up other characters.

Aether and Lumine are two sides of the same coin in Genshin Impact and ultimately have little impact on how the story is told outside of their respective genders. Players can choose their own unique names, or stick with the ones given, but the twins do have canon names for those that like to follow the lore.
