Garrett Hedlund wasn't an altogether well-known name before he scored the lead as Sam Flynn in Joseph Kosinski's 2010 sci-fi sequel TRON: Legacy, which performed well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel and put Hedlund on the map enough to get him an offer of the lead male role in Fifty Shades of Grey (he turned it down).

The script for TRON 3 is currently being penned by Jesse Wigutow (The Crow) with rumors that it could be out in theaters by 2015 or 2016. Hedlund is semi-officially confirmed to reprise his role, and hopefully we'll also learn a little more about isomorphic algorithm Quorra and finally get a pay-off for all the scenes in TRON: Legacy that seemed to set Cillian Murphy up as an antagonist.

While the development gears continue to grind for TRON 3, however, Hedlund is keeping busy with other roles. As well as starring in this year's music drama Inside Llewyn Davis, THR reports that Hedlund has also signed on for a role in true story war drama Unbroken, which will be directed by Angelina Jolie.

Unbroken tells the story of World War II hero Louis Zamperini, who was lost at sea without food or water for 47 days after his plane crashed in the Pacific. After enduring attacks from both sharks and from a Japanese bomber plane that tried to pick him and his companions off from overhead. Zamperini eventually washed up on shore and was immediately captured by the Japanese Navy, taken to a prisoner of war camp and held in brutal conditions for over three years.

The role of Zamperini will be played by British newcomer Jack O'Connell, who is also set to play Calisto in upcoming sequel 300: Rise of an Empire. Hedlund will play one of Zamperini's fellow prisoners of war, Commander John Fitzgerald, and Finn Wittrock (All My Children) is attached to play Francis "Mac" McNamara, one of the crewmates who shared the life raft with Zamperini. Unbroken is set to begin filming in October.

Jolie's first war drama, In the Land of Blood and Honey, wasn't the strongest start she could have had as a director, but Unbroken could well be the movie to put her on the map as a behind-the-camera talent. The script, which is based on Laura Hillenbrand's bestselling biography of Zamperini's trials, was penned by the highly-lauded filmmaking duo Joel and Ethan Coen, and there's a lot of potential for a very moving drama within the story.

Tell us in the comments if you think Unbroken will have what it takes to outdo In the Land of Blood and Honey at the box office, and what you think of Jolie's casting choices so far.
