What happens when you mash up two of the most genre defining characters from two opposite end of the spectrum genres of comics? You get this insane fan art crossover where Garfield the cat becomes the all powerful Dr. Manhattan.. yes, you read that correctly.

Best known for hating mondays and loving lasagna, Garfield is a staple of the comic strip world. Created by Jim Davis in 1976 under the original title Jon, Garfield is still celebrated around the world as one of the most popular comic strip characters to ever exist, and in recent years has become quite the internet sensation in the world of memes, which is eventually what ultimately led to this fantastic fan art mash up. While Garfield is a simple strip meant to serve as comic relief, the other part of this mash up, Watchmen, is pretty much its polar opposite; a genre changing moment in graphic novel history. Within the comic book community, Alan Moore's Watchmen is praised for flipping the comic industry on its head, serving as almost a satire of the very heroes comic books are about. The story is incredibly dark and gritty as it deals with heavy philosophies and the complexities of super heroes set within an alternate reality in which heroes helped America win Vietnam.

The idea of crossing such an emotional and deep story with something as lighthearted and goofy as Garfield is exactly what makes this epic crossover so seriously hilarious. Created by an artist that goes by the name of Taboonle, this fan art crossover features one of Watchmen's most impactful scenes "Garfieldized." As ridiculous and hilarious as the piece may be, it's genuinely a work of art, capturing the styles of artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins, who worked on Watchmen, nearly perfectly. Below you can see Garfield as Dr. Manhattan as he confronts Jon as Rorschach.

And that's not where the fun stops, as Taboonle has a whole slew of other comic inspired Garfield crossovers. Below are more of his stellar crossovers of some other fan favorites.

Now these are serious works of art. More than just memes, these hilarious crossovers have some serious talent behind them, and it will be really interesting to see what he whips up next, which you can keep up with by following his instagram here. With how strange 2020 has been, seeing Garfield as Dr. Manhattan seems just about right.
