Garbage Pail Kids Movie New Garbage Pail Kids Movie on the Way

Former Disney head honcho Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company is set to produce and finance a new movie based on the Topps trading cards Garbage Pail Kids.

Eisner’s company bought Topps in 2007 and this is the first film to be created from Topps material since the purchase. It’s not the first time that there has been a Garbage Pail Kids movie: a feature film based on the property was released in 1987; however, that film was mauled by critics and it grossed just $661,000 on its opening weekend for a paltry $1.5 million lifetime gross.

According to Wikipedia, the premise for the Topps card series is that “Each sticker card features a Garbage Pail Kid character having some comical abnormality and/or suffering some terrible fate, and a humorous, word play-rich character name.” You can check out the trailer for the original Garbage Pail Kids movie below (it speaks for itself):

The concept of the Garbage Pail Kids was devised by cartoonists Art Spiegelman and Mark Newgarden in 1985 as an antidote to ultra-popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls. Topps were then sued by Cabbage Patch makers Coleco for infringing on their trademark and the case was later settled out of court.

The Tornante Company’s Garbage Pail Kids movie will be written by Michael Vukadinovich, and directed by short filmmaker PES (yes that’s his name). No other details are known about the project, but it’s probably safe to assume that the film will be some sort of live action/CGI hybrid much like Alvin and the Chipmunks series.

It remains to be seen if it will be of the same..ahem..”quality” as those Chipmunks films, but if it grosses a fraction of what they did at the box office, then The Tornante Company may have a lucrative franchise on its hands.
