I agree with most of the reviews I’ve read. It’s definitely style over substance. It’ll entertain you but it’s no L.A. Confidential or The Untouchables. That’s fine to me but I am just a little disappointed that they didn’t go for something a little deeper considering the talent involved. Still, I prefer it over Public Enemies and I’ll own it on Blu-Ray whenever it comes out.
I want to know which executive producer I should blame for the multiple cliche scenes in Gangster Squad. Not that I did a lot of research on the actual history about Mickey Cohen but it seems a lot of the story line was bologna. It was entertaining but it could have had more context and less flashy effects; not that they were bad, they were amazing.
I wanted to see Emma Stone ‘own’ her role and blow me away but I got the feeling that one bed scene, with her and Ryan, was totally producer’s idea. There are two “hot” stars on screen but it wasn’t much to see.
