UPDATE: Check out the new teaser trailer for season 2: Game of Thrones Season 2 Teaser Trailer

After last week’s shocking development, Game Of Thrones fans are clamoring for the season one finale this Sunday. While it’s a long wait for the Season 2 premiere next year, filming begins next month, and executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss revealed a few details in a recent interview.

Game Of Thrones has climbed steadily in the rating since its mediocre debut, with last week’ episode winning 2.7 million viewers. HBO renewed Game Of Thrones almost immediately after the premiere, and we can expect the second season to arrive in or around April of next year.

The production will remain a UK affair, with indoor filming in Belfast and exterior scenes shot on location around Northern Ireland. Last year, the crew went to locales like Malta to film scenes in the fictional eastern continent, so expect the same location or a reasonable facsimile for the continuation of Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) storyline.

While no new cast members have been announced, expect the characters from the current season to return (at least the ones that make it out of the finale alive). The next season is based on the second book of A Song of Ice and Fire, A clash of Kings, and will call for dozens of new parts, large and small. Executive producers Benioff and Weiss gave an interview to the L.A. Times and let loose some tidbits about adapting the second novel for the small screen:

Benioff: …There’s a lot of writing and a lot of casting still. Most series if you get second season you’re done with most of the casting. With the second book and the second season, a whole slew of characters make their appearances.

Weiss: I’m sitting here looking at our casting grid, which is a grid of names and faces of all the characters. …Now I’m looking at the grid again, and half the people are gone because they’ve been massacred wholesale. And now there’s a grid to be filled in again with a new group of people.

With filming beginning so soon, you can expect casting for important Clash of Kings characters like Stannis Baratheon, Balon Greyjoy and Melisandre to be announced or leaked in the next few weeks.

Readers will be happy to know that author George R.R. Martin‘s role as an executive producer is not a mere title. He’s had writing duties of his own, and continues in an oversight role as production on the second season begins. In fact: Martin will be writing an entire episode which portrays the pivotal event that concludes the second book/season.

Benioff: He’s writing an episode for the coming season, which is probably the heaviest, the [spoiler]. Now that we’re on the ground here in Belfast and working with the visual effects team and production team that’s going to create the sets, we have to talk to George about what that looks like. He’s just as involved as in Season 1.

Weiss: …After each episode we get a report card.

The pair also mentioned some of the special effects-heavy events in Season 2, which we’ll omit for spoiler reasons. Benioff and Weiss acknowledged that there are challenges bringing such a large-scale fantasy world to life, especially when it comes to budget, but a continued focus on the various characters of Game Of Thrones has allowed them to pick and choose when and where to use expensive and time-consuming effects.

Several comments about the books, I have read the entire set, as it stands to date, and, eagerly await the next instalment. Having been made to wait 5 years for the most recent issue, I pray that GRR Martin doesn’t take so long before supplying the next book. No matter the time they are worht the reading.

In the mean time I’ll enjoy the show and look forward to series 2 complete with all its accents!!!

  5. I really hope HBO take up the option of doing screen plays for all six books in this series. I have just finished the fifth book (A Dance With Dragons) and every page is worth its weight in gold, as are all the books George has written in this riveting series. Looking forward to series 2 and seeing how Rob,Jon, Arya,Sansa fare gainst the Lannisters. A great show HBO keep up the great work. Oh,British and Irish accents are perfect for this drama!!

    and by the way?

I expect no less than having Cersei’s head on a platter!

    • I totally agree with you there… she is the one that started the whole mess with her and her brother’s son.. he is a arrogant, domineering character.. too much like her for my taste.. his head needs to be beside hers.

  9. Great movie indeed, keep up the good work…. The Numero UNO “HBO”.

  10. great series and cant wait for season 2.

  11. when does season 2 start??? Anyone???

    • I read the Hollywood Reporter, states possibly April of 2012, they just started filming in July.. so it won’t be for several months before it comes back.. I am like you .. I hate the long wait for season 2.. I loved the first season, and watched each show over and over.. Way to go HBO..

  12. I just watched last Sunday, episodes one and two which were only just launched here in the Philippines, after watching I went straight out and bought the complete series on DVD and watched all (the entire 10 episodes ‘back to back’) absolutely brilliant, great acting, great scenes, great story line. Upset to find out how long it will be before series 2 comes out as I wanted to see some pay back for certain characters which unfortunately never materialized!

    • i envy you… i wanna live in philippines… :/

  13. The words are not enough to describe about the way in which each shot is screened and performance of artists. This show certainly took my mind to the past as we can see in this show. This is one of good series besides the Spartacus. I am awaiting for the second season.

  14. Y U KEEP US WAIT?!??!?

  15. My husband and I congratulate all involved an outstanding Series. We are total fans. Absolutely brilliant – hurry up Season 2. Can’t wait

  16. Just finished Dances with Dragons – but I cannot wait till Spring 2011 for episode 2!!! Help!!!… also waiting for next book to see if Jon Snow survived (I hope so)

  17. I so can’t wait for Season 2! I was so excited for it, I went out and bought all the books just to see what happens next! It’s helped to fill in the void. I’ve only just started book five.

For those of you waiting for the ‘just deserts’ certain characters demand, you’re probably in for a long wait. lol. But it’s WORTH IT. However, if they intend to turn each book into a season, then you’ll be waiting till Season 4 before anything starts happening on that horizon. And…I think you will be pleasantly surprised to watch your allegiances change as the story progresses! I know I was! If you can’t wait, I seriously suggest the books as a way to fulfill the need to see what happens next.

  18. Had not seen this series before last week…usually work to much to watch TV…thank goodness for retirement. Now I can catch up on some great programs like this. Though I watched a couple episodes on my own two days earlier I told Trish about it not thinking she would be interested.
After seeing the first episode together, we were both hooked and watched all 10 episodes in one sitting! What a great series…we both cant wait until season 2 gets here. Oh, and I do not recommend you to do the almost 10 hour marathon..unless of course you dont have to work the next day or you are retired!

  19. I can’t wait for Season 2. Can’t wait for the Starks to kill all the Lannisters… though I’m not sure if it will happen lol. The Lannisters are too rich and too powerful. I want to read the books but I want to watch Season 2 first on HBO before doing that. Congrats to all who are behind this great epic series. You did a wonderful job!

  23. The dwarf kills his dad and gets accused of killing joffery (the kid king) so one would imagine rob stark didnt do so well. I have the book dance with dragons and started reading it. Hopefully the rest of my books arrive from ebay :D I worked out queen Elizabeth needs a hand of the king to keep Juliar Gillard and her tax in check.

    • Hi Scott, I’m not sure why you would post any information from the books that you’ve read when the HBO episodes have not even aired, my guess is that you run your mouth during movies as well! Please shut up!
      See below…totally agree w/ Amanda
