Fresh off three major Emmy nominations for Game Of Thrones, HBO has announced a trio of new cast members. Carice van Houten, Stephen Dillane and Liam Cunningham will join the cast for Season 2.

Easily the biggest player as far as the larger Game of Thrones story is concerned is Dillane, who’ll take the role of Stannis Baratheon. Stannis is the late King Robert’s younger brother (but older than “King” Renly), the true successor that Eddard Stark tried to set on the throne instead of Prince Joffrey.

Stannis rules Dragonstone, where he stews and plots his conquest with the help of his primary adviser, Davos Seaworth, played by Cunningham. Davos is a former smuggler who joined Stannis’ court after breaking a blockade and saving his life.

Easily the most incendiary element at Dragonstone is Houten’s role, the foreign priestess Melisandre. The sorceress is highly influential with Stannis’ wife, and eventually convinces him to enter the game, creating a four-way war for the Iron Throne.

Carice van Houten is a Dutch-born actress best know for female leads in dramas such as Valkyrie and Black Book. Readers will know Stephen Dillane as Thomas Jefferson from the HBO miniseries John Adams, and Irish actor Liam Cunningham will be comfortable as a warrior after working on Clash of the Titans and Showtime’s recently-cancelled Camelot. Cunningham won an Irish Television and Film Award for his performance in The Wind That Shakes The Barley.

As with previous additions Gwendoline Christie and Natalie Dormer,  the cast additions have given strong performances without breaking out into more recognizable star territory, a la Sean Bean. Considering the generally positive reaction of novel fans to the cast thus far, viewers should have nothing to worry about for Season 2. The five new characters cast represent the most important additions from the source material’s second book.

HBO will be hosting a Game of Thrones panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 21st. If you can’t get to San Diego, keep an eye on Screen Rant’s Comic-Con page for the latest news.

Game of Thrones is filming the new season in Europe right now, with a spring 2012 debut planned on HBO.

  1. Pefect!!!!! I love the Stannis choice, think I will be happy with Davos, not sure about Melisandre yet….

  2. hey… its Cunningham who will play davos and dillane will play stannis. Check the article again. the infos are wrong.

  3. You’re a professional reporter? Fact check, please. GOT is nominated for 13 Emmys, not 3. Cunningham will play Davos, not Stannis. Dillane will play Stannis, not Davos Seaworth, the Onion Knight. Are you actually paid money? Three incorrect “facts” in eight paragraphs? Really?

    • Post is updated, m’lord. Tis the first night of Comic-Con, and these fingers are weary. Pray, do not get your smallclothes in a twist.

      • Hahaha!!!

    • Indeed. Well done for spotting his incompetence, and rising above his sarcasm, the lowest form of wit…

Some people really need to pull their socks up

  4. Another thing, you mentioned “creating a four-way war for the Iron Throne”… it should be five way, because there are five kings fighting for the iron throne thus calling it “the war of the 5 kings”.

    1. King Joff
    2. King Renly
    3. King Stannis
    4. King Robb Stark
    5. King Balon Greyjoy

The 5 new casts are not actually the most important. Margaery Tyrell is not that important Clash of Kings but maybe they will rewrite game of thrones season 2 because they hired a big star for the role. Asha Greyjoy is actually more prominent than Melisandre. Melisandre also didnt convinced Stannis in joining the war, She merely just supported him and use a different religion and sorcery which Stannis is aware of.

    • At one point in the series, a historian goes to great lengths to point out that Balon only formally enters the war after Renly… leaves. And you’re right, Balon isn’t as major a character as his son and daughter, though I’d say it’s a toss-up as to whether Asha or Melisandre are more important characters. I haven’t read the 5th book yet; I wonder if the latter gets any POV chapters?

      • Melisandre has at least one POV chapter, just got that far last night.

    • Stark huh lol…”the war of the 5 kings” really??? its only 4 kings who are fighting for the iron throne. Balon Greyjoy is a king but his got nothing to do with the iron throne. All he’s doing is taking over a few minor castles and lands and the north. He doesn’t even do battle with any of the other kings competing for the iron throne and that’s the 2nd book and his not even mentioned in part 1 of the 3rd book.

  5. Wow…… What’s with the hostility? I understand your lives are not as interesting as the books and show but come on….

  6. Lay off the Screen Rant crew, they had to travel and are currently doing Comic Con. I imagine it is a pretty hectic weekend for them! I also want to know who they cast as Balon(even though he probably won’t get much screen time. I like the new casting though!

    • acslaterson I heard tony curran. king stephen from pillers of the earth
was in talk for the part I’m still mad that christopher eccleston didnt get the part of stannis

      • sorry I meant tony curran was up for the part of balon.

        • Whew! Good thing you corrected yourself before the game of thrones casting Gestapo did!

          • ya it’s been a long night.

          • Well unlike dder earlier – I love sarcasm.

  7. I think I would’ve liked Cunningham better as Stannis than Dillane, but oh well. I really liked Dillane from “John Adams” though, I just don’t see him fitting that role adequately. Guess he’ll have to shave his head.

  8. Dillane is not what I pictured for Stannis, maybe it’s just the picture but he looks way too scrawny to play such an imposing figure. But then again, I’m only 200 pages into book 2.

  9. I wasnt ranting. I was just commenting. Read my comments slowly and u will find it to politely written.

I was just expressing my opinions. Geezz..

  10. Stephen Dillane is a great actor I loved him in John Adams.

  11. I just watched the entire first season in the last two days, having finished Fire And Blood only minutes ago I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the casting for season 2 doesn’t mean crap. White walkers invading from the north and 3 dragons coming from across the Narrow Sea are about to mess everyone up lol

    • True haha

      • I wonder if Sarah Fergusson could play one of the Dragons.
