Game of Thrones’ Hot Pie Opened His Own Bakery In Real Life

Ben Hawkey, the actor who recently returned to Game of Thrones as Hot Pie, is also selling Direwolf loaves in real life at his own bakery. Longtime fans of Game of Thrones got a welcome sight during last Sunday’s second episode of the season, “Stormborn”, in the return of Hot Pie. A young orphan character from King’s Landing, played by actor Hawkey, Hot Pie was known for baking his delicious pies, and spent the majority of the show’s second and third seasons accompanying Arya Stark and her other friends. Until Sunday's episode, Hot Pie hadn’t been seen since season 4, when he was left by Arya at the inn at the crossroads.

It was at the inn where Hot Pie showed up again in Sunday’s episode, reunited with Arya and delivering her the good news that the Boltons are dead and Arya’s family, the Starks, are once again in control of Winterfell. It proceeded that other reunion, between Arya and her direwolf, Nymeria. Now, we have word about what Hot Pie, or at least the actor playing him, has been up to for the three years he was off-screen.

Hawkey has opened a bakery with a notable Game of Thrones theme. The name of the bakery is You Know Nothing John Dough and it sells “Direwolf Bread,” made from ingredients that include “whole wheat cornbread with orange zest.” The bread will be available through the U.K.-based delivery site Deliveroo.com; there’s no word of availability stateside. In a statement made to Digital Spy, Hawkey said of the bakery and its Direwolf loaves:

"Hot Pie's Direwolf loaves are a favourite for Game of Thrones fans, and people are always asking me for the secret of my recipe. I can't share that, but Deliveroo customers will have the chance to try them themselves. You don't even need to take a dangerous walk down the King's Road to visit, it comes to you."

The 21-year-old Hawkey has few credits outside Game of Thrones, having appeared only on the TV series Beaver Falls and the movies The Kid and Ra.One. Whether he’ll be back on Thrones this season is unclear, although because Arya left the inn without taking him with her, it’s a safe bet he won’t.

At any rate, we applaud Ben Hawkey for fulfilling his dreams of becoming an actual baker, and for getting some extra recognition for a mostly small part on a popular TV series.

It’s unclear how much involvement HBO or the Game of Thrones producers have in the You Know Nothing John Dough venture, or whether or not we’ll be getting more Thrones-themed food or drink products. Dornish Wine? Cold Beer, From Beyond the Wall? Grain From the Reach? The possibilities are virtually endless.
