HBO's Game of Thrones season 7 will see Ed Sheeran appear in a cameo role, the details of which he recently revealed. Sheeran has already conquered the world of pop music with his earnest guitar-strumming singer-songwriter stylings. Two years ago Sheeran made a move over into the world of acting by taking on a part in Kurt Sutter's historical drama The Bastard Executioner, and this summer Sheeran will be returning to prestige television with a role on HBO's soaringly popular fantasy series Game of Thrones.

Sheeran's participation was first revealed by GoT showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss at SXSW back in March. As they explained, they wanted to cast Sheeran as a surprise for actress Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), who is a big fan of the redheaded crooner. Until now, the exact details of Sheeran's role were not available, but Sheeran has changed all that.

In an appearance with Tom Green on The Hits Radio (via Heat World), Sheeran gave up all the pertinent info about his cameo. Turns out it's a very small part but it does involve Arya and he does get to show off his considerable musical talent. Sheeran said:

“I just do a scene with Maisie. I sing a song and then she goes, oh, that's a nice song.”

Sheeran previously told The Daily Star, "I do know which role I am going to play. I don’t die in it, I don’t die." So we know Sheeran won't be joining the list of most shocking Game of Thrones deaths. Sheeran said his part lasts about five minutes.

Sheeran is not the first figure from the world of music to pop up in a cameo on Game of Thrones. The band Mastodon can be spotted playing wildlings in the background of the Hardhome battle; Icelandic gloom-rockers Sigur Ros play a wedding band in the episode where Joffrey meets his demise (they also contributed a version of "Rains of Castamere" to the soundtrack); Coldplay drummer Will Champion appears in a scene appropriately as a guy banging on a drum; Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody patrols in the snow on a horse; and the band Of Monsters and Men (perfectly named for Game of Thrones) show up as jaunty minstrels perched on the side of a castle.

Outside of getting to work with his huge fan Williams, the other highlight for Sheeran on the set of GoT was relieving himself in close proximity to Jon Snow:

"One star-struck moment. Taking a pee next to Kit Harington before I knew him, obviously being a big Game of Thrones fan."

No word on how much Sheeran was paid for his appearance, but it's a good bet it wasn't as much as the show's lead actors, some of whom are reportedly making up to $1.1 million per episode in seasons 7 and 8 (which may explain why there will only be 13 more episodes in total). Even if Sheeran is good in his five minute cameo, he likely won't be good enough to crack the ranking of best Game of Thrones performances.
