New ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 3 Trailers Up the Stakes of the War of Five Kings [UPDATED]

[See Update Below]

With only two weeks to go until the premiere of season 3 of Game of Thrones, anticipation for the return of the HBO fantasy-drama series has reached a fever pitch. This comes as no surprise, given that the previous season ended on a massive showstopper of a cliffhanger and that the upcoming episodes adapt from the fan-favorite novel A Storm of Swords.

The vast ensemble cast of Game of Thrones has seen celebrated performances from Peter Dinklage (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Mama), Emilia Clarke (Spike Island), and Kit Harington (Silent Hill: Revelation 3D), among many others. This season, showrunners David Benioff and and D.B. Weiss have recruited several new fresh faces – perhaps most notably Ciaran Hinds (John Carter) as Mance Rayder, the King Beyond the Wall.

Game of Thrones Season 3 Danaerys New Game of Thrones Season 3 Trailers Up the Stakes of the War of Five Kings [UPDATED]

This short preview focuses on the deepening bitterness and violence of the War of the Five Kings. As Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) wishes death upon the other major contenders for the Iron Throne, queen-in-exile Daenerys Targaryen (Clarke) is looking to recruit an army of mercenaries for an invasion of her homeland. Meanwhile, Jon Snow (Harington) tries to secure his position among the Wildlings and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) deals with a certain unruly prisoner.

Though not exactly brimming over with new material, this trailer emphasizes that the stakes only continue to grow for everyone playing the Game of Thrones. The triumphs and failures of season 2 are giving way to bloody-minded feuds. This will be the season to watch closely – after all, your favorite characters may well not be making it out of it alive.

Update: Proving that HBO is not letting off the throttle of Game of Thrones‘ hype machine any time soon, the network released another season 3 trailer late yesterday. This one expands on the interpersonal dramas (and swordplay) of the upcoming season. You can check out “The Beast” preview below.

  1. I couldn’t help but think of Al Capone from The Untouchables when Stannis uttered his lines. lol

    • Don’t mean to hijack your comment Will, but…

If you haven’t read the books do not go any further in the comment section if you don’t want a spoiler revealed. Someone has decided it would be fun to ruin the show for others! Hopefully Screenrant can do something about his/her comment before too many people read it.

      • Thank you

      • Good man. I’ve read the books but there are huge plot twists that will come as great surprises.

      • Thank you for the heads up. :D

  2. i have a feeling that Tyrion’s story will expand this season. just because Tyrion is a very popular character and loved by so many people. also, Peter Dinklage, his phenomenal performance of a gifted actor who we all love to watch on screen. he’s that good.

    • The story killed Ned Stark – the most beloved character in season 1. Honestly, nothing will surprise me when it comes to Game Of Thrones.

      • Have you read the books, or just watch the first two seasons of the show? If you haven’t read the books, just wait…

  3. Should be the best season so far.

  4. Mance Rayder isn’t King in the North, he’s King beyond the Wall.!!!

    • This is the most annoying kind of error — an error made despite knowing the correct information. I’d blame my rewatch of season 2 and the constant incantation of, “King in the North!” but that didn’t begin until this afternoon. No excuses!

Thank you for pointing out the typo.

  5. Ooo thank you Carl, that was indeed kind of an annoying typo.

  6. Ohh Rob Stark’s story will be something to look forward to this season…

    • ?!

      Hope that wasnt a spoiler

      • i think it was

        • Hey Screenrant,

Can we do something about Jesse’s comment?

  7. Another trailer was just released by HBO called “The Beast”.

  8. why this braaawww trailes…

  9. Its about to get real interesting, I am not gonna be a dick and spoil it for you guys but I have read the books and we are in for a real treat. No spoilers but for anyone who has read the books do you mind the changes? I don’t because I almost view the show as being a different story but with the same basic outline as the book.

    • I honestly don’t mind spoilers. I mean, the books are there to be expanded on. Any changes they make are pretty much approved by G.R.R.M, so he obviously has no problems with it. I kind of enjoy to see them taking some of the arcs a different way, it gives the existing characters a little more depth.
For instance, I never actually picked up on the Loras/Renly relationship in the books (stupid, I know) so when it was used in the show, I was pleasantly surprised.

      • *I honestly don’t mind changes*
Sorry. I seem to have spoilers on the mind.

    • I won’t spoil anything for those who haven’t red the books (I’ve learned my lesson), but I wasn’t that annoyed with the minor changes they did in the first season. It’s the changes in the second season that I didn’t like; House of the undying, Xaro Xoan Daxos, to name these two (almost scared to let something slip out if I were to name more).

      • yeah they kind of seemed really off when they made those changes. i know they made other ones but those make sense like robb isnt a point of view character in the books but in the show you get to follow his story so martin and hbo get to put a good twist on the story. but when it came to danerys they changed alot of it up and some of it seemed unnecessary or that might hurt the story a little bit down the road

  10. Although I boarded the Game of Thrones bandwagon late I enjoyed the luxury of being able to watch both seasons in a 5 day span.
So watching week to week is going to be torture but there’s no chance of me waiting for the season to end and then binge watching. I look forward to reading recaps and debating with everyone else.
This spring and summer will be great for TV junkies like myself.
Game of Thrones then the last season of Dexter the end of June and then the last season of Breaking Bad in July.
    So excited. :)

  11. Glad to see that the comment that jerk made was deleted. Note: not everyone has read the books people… -__-

  12. Yes! More! Now! War!

My fanboy giddiness is rising! #GiddinessIsComing

  13. Glad to see that the comment that jerk made was deleted. Note: not everyone has read the books people… -__-

  14. No spoilers but the 3rd book was the best. so season three is going to be a real treat

    • season 4 too, that book was freaking huge.

      • If I remember correctly, AFFC was about 880 pages and ADWD 947 pages. If you take the chronology into effect, as Martin wanted us to remember, that’s a whopping 1827 pages!

  15. I know one thing that happens in this season thanks to an idiot on a different website last year but otherwise, I’m going into season three like I did with the first two. Completely blind and curious how things will play out.

I’m also excited about seeing Paul Kaye in it. He’s been a favourite actor of mine since the early 90s when he had that Dennis Pennis character that annoyed celebs then created Mike Strutter for an MTV show (very NSFW and based on Sean Penn’s character from Carlito’s Way if I remember correctly).

Plus he’s a real good straight actor away from the comedy roles. Saw him recently in some ads and in a comedy show that featured Charles Dance so it’s nice to see him back on tv so prominently.

  16. What is the name of the blond actress? She is so adorable. Cant wait for the new season to start!

  17. The arrial of Meera and Jojen Reed.
    The arrival of the Unsullied.
Ser Barristan Selmy joins Daenerys Targaryen.
The arrival of The Queen Of Thorns.
The death of the False-King Joffrey Baratheon.
The death of Robb Stark, The King In The North.
The death of Twyin Lannister, Goldmonger.
    Tyrion Lannister weds Sansa Stark.
    Jamie Lannister loses a hand.
Petyr Baelish makes Lady Lysa fly.
