Peter Dinklage Face Scars Game of Thrones season 3 Game of Thrones Producer Wants 8 Seasons Total Will You Watch?

Game of Thrones is riding high following the release of the full season 3 trailer – teasing the return of fan-favorite characters along with some new faces, not to mention some epic dragon action! The show continues to cull a strong and passionate following, leading many viewers to wonder just how long can the show keep up the pace and how many seasons will HBO produce. After all, the series is limited by creator George R.R. Martin’s book series, which includes five published installments with two more on the way.

So how many more seasons will HBO’s Game of Thrones stay on the air? If showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have it their way, the series’ lifespan could ratchet up to eight seasons, but only so long as the network wants to keep producing it.

Benioff and Weiss recently opened up about the program’s longevity in a recent interview with Mother Jones, in which they discussed not only the duration of the show but also some of the difficulties and challenges they faced in shooting its upcoming third season. On the specific topic of Thrones‘ remaining seasons, however, they had this to say:

MJ: I gather that Game of Thrones could last eight or nine seasons. Does that mean putting novel writing on hold for a decade?

B&W: Yes, if we live that long and HBO keeps wanting to make the show. We have the opportunity here to tell a coherent story that lasts for 80 hours. And while a canvas of that size presents all sorts of storytelling problems, it also allows us to spend more time with these characters we love than we’ll ever get again. Every once in a while we get five minutes to think about thinking about novels. But mostly we’re just happy when we get to read one now and again.

There has always existed a degree of uncertainty over how long Game of Thrones will last, but with the critical and mainstream success the show has enjoyed since first airing back in 2011 (not to mention the slew of Emmy nominations it has received and won), it seems likely that it will soldier on to the very end once George R.R. Martin has completed his as-yet unfinished septet of epic fantasy novels. If nothing else, it’s clear that Benioff and Weiss are game to continue serving as executive producers for as many seasons as HBO gives them.

Game of Thrones Danaerys and the Unsullied Game of Thrones Producer Wants 8 Seasons Total Will You Watch?

For fans, 80 hours of television spent in Westeros and Essos should sound like a dream come true. If the span of Martin’s original work serves as any indication, however, that figure might be somewhat conservative. Season three – which premieres on March 31st, 2013 - only covers the first half of the third book in the Song of Ice and Fire series, titled A Storm of Swords; season four will adapt the remainder, a natural split given the immensity of the story. (The novel is so long, in fact, that the UK and Australia editions were sold in two parts.)

That leaves books four and five - A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons, respectively – left to transplant from page to screen, as well as the incomplete sixth and seventh entries, titled The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. The latter two novels remain unknown quantities in the television show’s scale; they could fit into a single season each or require separation just like A Storm of Swords. Meanwhile, A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons both boast impressive page lengths, but could arguably be cut down and combined into one total season together. Eight seasons, as suggested, seems like a good ballpark figure, but as Martin has neither finished The Winds of Winter nor A Dream of Spring, we can only go by what Benioff and Weiss have to say for the time being.

In the meantime, the show’s viewers can look ahead to season 3. Are you in it for the long haul, and does another five seasons of Game of Thrones excite you? Put your two cents in the poll below and in the comments section, and we’ll see you back here when Game of Thrones returns to television at the end of the month!

  1. No way will I watch this mess. I really tried with the beginning of Season 1 but showed nudity and filth for no reason and the plot was an obvious ripoff of War of the Roses: Lancaster renamed Lannister, York renamed Stark…or ripping off Tony Stark aka Iron Man…

    • A true story about war contains sex and nudity of course,so don`t complain aabout it kid , u don`t like then don`t watch , but keep it for urself , noone cares

    • The War of the Roses was one of the big inspirations for the books, so yeah, there are similarities. And the books are even more graphic, so there you go.

    • your dumb. and so what if it had nudity? its rated “TV MA”.. what are you, a little girl or just jealous of all the hot naked women you don’t get?

    • I agree…why couldn’t all the prostitutes been dressed in heavy woolen sweaters, just like back in the old days?

      • LMFAO!!! Seriously though, why do people care about sex & nudity? It’s a FANTASTIC STORY!!! If anything, all the sex and “filth” just make it more realistic. If you’re offended by that then I feel sorry for you because you’re missing out on the most epic fantasy I’ve ever watched/read in my entire life! If people would just stop being all “OMG NAKED MEN AND WOMEN!! EWWWWW!” and focus on the damn STORY you won’t even notice the nudity!! Game Of Thrones is the greatest show I’ve ever watched, and I’m going to be so sad when it’s all over :(

  2. Can’t wait for the next series

  3. Nudity? GASP! Filth? SHREAK! Look at a calendar, Tython. ITS 2013! Your opinions on what is right and acceptable are no longer THE ONLY opinion. Were getting smarter as a species. Maybe nudity is beautiful and you are DEAD wrong. More importantly, save your morality judgements. No one cares and this is a wonderful wonderful show. Go back to the 1950′s and buy a blender. Bravo, HBO.

    • well spoken “Truth”

    • Where’s the Like Button? Well said truth. Love This Show. Season 3 Episode 9 Blew My Mind!

  4. It would be great to see at least a season per book, to flesh out the series as I have not read the books and at the moment don’t plan to. It would be a shame to loose a good series like Dead Wood early, but I’m not sure if the public will move on after a few more years if the episode does not remain high and moving the plot along at a constant pace with not to many filler episodes

  5. Yes, I’m hooked! I’ll watch all eight seasons.

  6. It’s a testament to how good this adaptation is if only 1% out of nearly 5,000 people actually said they wouldn’t watch 8 seasons.
I’m optimistic that Martin will release the next book before the show catches up. It’s what happens after the sixth book is released that I’m curious about. It has occurred to me that Martin might just write up the script for the last season before finishing the book. However, I hear there are plans for a Game of Thrones prequel series, so perhaps that’s the answer. Unfortunately it’s all conjecture until anything is actually announced.

  7. I would gladly watch 16 seasons. Best show EVER!

    • same here! this is by far the best series in television history even better than the walking dead (which is 2nd best in my opinion)

      • You right about that love walking dead. but I will never get enough of Game of Thrones one of the best shows on television. keep it going HBO love it love it..

  8. Can’t wait for the next season. Just wished I didn’t have to wait so long. And nudity, violence that comes with the time period. So get off your high horse man don’t watch the show. And I would love to see the assassin again.

  9. Can’t wait for the next season. Just wished I didn’t have to wait so long. And nudity, violence that comes with the time period. So get off your high horse man don’t watch the show.

  10. And they should totally bring back Jaqen H’ghar.

  11. best show ever! i loved tonights episode (season 3 episode 9). i was not expecting that ending, until things got subtly awry in a way i can’t explain (even before it became noticeable with the music change and shutting of the doors) i don’t know how they gave it that subtle feeling but however they did it was amazing. all the episodes are amazing, and if one week is kind of “eh” the next week always blows you away. i would gladly watch even more than 8 seasons. i’m only 20 now, i could watch this until my deathbed.

    • Yes It is Shakespearean without the prose. Excellent.

  12. I am so inspired by this series – i will watch 20 seasons!! So please keep writing :-)

  13. I want to see more gay scenes! I mean come on!
Also … I want to see more of Bran’s warg abilities :)

    • Of course you will fgt

  14. 8 seasons means 5 more years.. its a serial of one story not a comedy show, if you missed an episode.. you will not understand whats going on and will stop watching it, the chance of losing fans is more than gain more

so finish the story next season and write a new interesting one
    you are good at it..

  15. Have you seen Titus Anthony Hopkins & Jesica Lange? Stunning, riveting is what it is. GOT is this and more, Love it, I saw one episode on Showcase and was hooked. Bought 1st & 2nd seasons and almost watched them all back to back. Yes I would watch 8 seasons, more.

  17. Umbilical cord blood stem cells hold significant potential in treating life threatening diseases and conditions, including cancer.
Deciding to donate cord blood should be made,
by the thirty-fourth week of pregnancy. This
cell type can produce more stem cells and can also give rise to specialized cell
types of the tissue or organ they are located in.

  18. Yes of course!! It’s the best TV show ever

  19. Not only will I watch, I will also buy the damn limited edition box so PRODUCE PRODUCE PRODUCE FASTER FASTER FASTER MORE MORE MORE!!!

    • Uncertainty of the characters and the vast story line makes me crazy to watch this wonderful tv series .I personally enjoy the nudity and filth .

  20. seems like 10 episodes would be more reasonable with splitting a couple books in half (like season 3 and 4)

  21. 10 seasons i meant…

  22. game of thrones is one of the very best original series in production. I and many of my friends, look forward to new episodes every week while in production. can’t wait for the new season to begin. I must also mention that when the new episode airs. many of us watch again on free on demand. there is always a little something missed and this allows clarification of each episode. never get tired of the great stories that are intertwined each week. I’m upset that it has just been taken off free on demand HBO for other series to play. keep up the great work!

  23. The series are out of this world so fot the complainers stay away or get used to it by the way graet bodies !!!!

  24. Is It just me or i Arya hot?

  25. My only complaint would be that it has to come to a end. Thank god for HBO and thank good for game of thrones. And to the haters I say go back to your house episodes and csi Miami…

  27. It’s actually very complex in this full of activity life to listen news on TV, therefore I
simply use web for that reason, and obtain the newest news.

  28. The best show ever, keep up the great work, maybe i might get apart if you do season 8 in Australia :-)cheers
