Rant: First Look At Gambit In ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’

Published 5 years ago by , Updated February 15th, 2014 at 4:24 pm,

Some of you may have seen a brief glimpse of the infamous “ragin’ cajun” from leaked footage of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine teaser trailer that debuted at the Fox panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

For those who did not (and even those who did), we have the first official photo of Gambit thanks to Empire Magazine. This comes just days after a new picture of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine was released.

If you didn’t see the low-quality leaked videos but you’re excited to see the trailer for this movie like me, then you’re in luck as the official trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine debuts alongside The Day The Earth Stood Still on December 12th. That’s just two weeks away!

As for the image, this particular picture does not impress me. In those clothes with that face, I don’t see Gambit anywhere. It looks like some random shot from a poker movie. I imagine he’ll look much better and should resemble the character more when in uniform working for Weapon X… or perhaps not. Where the heck are his red eyes! How about the trench coat he is never seen without? Is that really supposed to be Remy LeBeau? Did I just say Weapon X?

Take a look and see what you think:

gambit taylor Rant: First Look At Gambit In X Men Origins: Wolverine

The Gambit character entered the Marvel universe in 1990, appearing in Uncanny X-Men (issue 266). However, it was not until the hit cartoon X-Men, the animated series that Gambit earned his massive fan base. The show lasted about 5 seasons and is by far my favorite cartoon of all time. It is where Gambit and Wolverine became my favorite X-Characters.

Just thinking about it brings back fond memories of all the guys in elementary school trading the Marvel cards. Gambit is still one of my favorite characters although I can’t say the same for Wolverine anymore with how overused he has become – not only in the comics, but obviously in the movies. I would even go so far as to say, the character has been partly ruined by Marvel.

I personally preferred Wolverine as just a part of the team as opposed to the central focus or for some crazy reason, the leader (The Last Stand, anyone? Even the new cartoon is called Wolverine and the X-men). As a side note, the new X-Men series has aired nearly a dozen episodes in some regions and is set to air in the U.S. in January. In this show, Wolverine is the leader of the X-Men and the real leader (Cyclops) is a background character. Without exaggerating, there’s been a complete trade and Cyclops has taken Wolverine’s exact role from the original nineties cartoon (the quiet angry badass).

wolverine1 Rant: First Look At Gambit In X Men Origins: WolverineTo me, Wolverine was awesome back in the day because he was the dark and dry support character with the short temper, sometimes-questionable morals and a mysterious past. He was the gruff man’s man who chilled out, drank beer and smoked while lying back on the couch with feet up.

Rules were not a priority of his but when crap hit the fan, you sure as hell wanted him on your side. However, you always feared he could go over the edge and might not always be easily restrained. When asked to do something he didn’t want to do, he’d argue or disagree but he had a heart of gold when it came to protecting his own – and this made him a father figure to several young female X-Men team members throughout the years.

Now? Well, now he’s the goody two-shoes who appears in like 328 comics a month – or something close to that. His mystery is gone, his coolness factor has dropped and what made him more awesome then most has faded. That being said, the character is still tons of fun to read (there’s a reason he got so much attention in the first place) and I love watching Hugh Jackman play him in the films. I just wish he could be used better to make other characters better as well, rather than inappropriately overshadowing them (and the story).

All right – now back to Gambit.

Known for being the resident ladies man of the X-Men, Gambit is part of one of Marvel’s most well-known (and complex) relationships with fellow teammate Rogue (played by Anna Paquin in the X-Men trilogy).

gambit Rant: First Look At Gambit In X Men Origins: WolverineIn X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Gambit is played by Canadian Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights and The Covenant fame. I think it’s cool that he’s a fellow Canadian but I actually was a supporter of the idea of Josh Holloway (who plays Sawyer in Lost) taking the role in the feature films and I’m saddened this did not come to fruition.

It’s obvious they needed a younger actor to play the part in this film as it is a prequel to the X-Men trilogy while completely out of any form of continuity. I love Gambit but he does not belong in this film. I understand that saying that doesn’t mean anything because Fox Studios’ take on the X-Men is far from what is in the source material. But I’m easily able to enjoy the films and separate the films from the rest of the Marvel material and take it for what it is.

I loved the first X-Men film, liked the second but really despised the third. The footage I saw of X-Men Origins: Wolverine makes me think it could be a fun ride. I just hope they don’t screw characters up as much as the story already is – or this is going to go from fun to frustrating and disappointing. Specifically, Deadpool had better have his scars and costume and Gambit had better throw some cards that glow and make that sweet sound similar to the cartoon. We can already see that they’re not giving Gambit his trademark visual feature of black and red eyes; they best not pull another Colossus and make him have no accent.

Wow…all of this over one picture I barely talk about.

What do you think of the picture? What do you expect from the film? What do you think of the use of the Wolverine character?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine hits theaters May 1, 2009 while Wolverine and the X-Men airs in the U.S. on January 23, 2009.

  1. im a die hard fan of gambit and it looks ok. hopefuly its only a one scene without coat.
im also with ROB where are the trademark eyes ???????????????????
he had his trench coat in the trailer and he is know 4 the accent so they better get it . either way i’ll see the movie and probly critisize it sum more.
but bottom line i better see sum
    Bio-kinetically Charged Cards Fly’in and
    X-ploading on impact.

  2. As you said Mr. Keyes, Gambit does not belong in this film. Unless they do some magical writing it will be completely unrealistic and just end up with Marvel trying to write in popular characters that they failed to put into the rest of the Franchise. I’m curious as to how they’ll fit someone from the Den of Thieves in Louisianan into the Weapon X project in Alberta.

I disagree with your opinion of Wolverine though. In Wolverine and the X-Men he still goes off on tangents and does his own thing, although he’s trying to change that to become a better leader. That’s part of the conflict whenever Rogue comes by and Logan’s gone. I don’t mind him developing into more a leadership role. Characters change over time.

All in all though I have rather low expectations for this film. It will likely end up being an over-hyped mish-mash of things that don’t belong together and ultimately screw up characters and story-line (much like X-3). I do hope I’m wrong though.

  3. Gambit is one of my very favorite characters and I must admit that I’m a little worried they’re going to screw up the character. Personally I think if they would just stick to the source material or at least the cartoon series they could have a character that could steal the show and possible end up with his own spin-off. I just hope and pray that Gambit acts like the Remy LeBeau that I know and love.

  4. Ok no one here is pissed about Sabretooth am i the only one….I really liked Tyler Mane as him why did they have to change him

  5. Alright so I have to get this off my chest first of all. I hate the movies. I just couldn’t get over the mess they made of Rogue…She was lacking in almost all Rogue like aspects… So I was terribly disappointed when I saw the first movie and there was no Jubilee (well Marie sort of felt more like Jubilee then Rogue but whatever) and no Gambit. I mean, these were big characters…I really hope they get Gambit close to perfect. Accent, power sounds, the whole shebang. As is, after watching the trailer, My hopes aren’t to high…

  6. Personally I own the 1991 Weapon X series.

I can’t imagine them sticking to that story. It wasn’t play time or stab someone with 3 claws and rainbows came out the holes.

It’d be amazing for adult content, but…

  7. Personally, I’ve been really ambivalent about this movie. One one side I’m excited that it looks nice and will include my favorite X-Men characters, and one the other hand, I’m really annoyed with the fact that they removed Gambit’s eyes and they seem to be slaughtering Deadpool’s storyline. I’m not to optimistic about it, but the least I can do is hope that they somehow, miraculously, can pull it off.

  8. i dont have a comment on the picture ok well i do. IT SUCKS from the picture and the picture only taylor does not do gambit justice. thats all im gonna say about that.

what im really here for is to pitch out the plot of what x4 should be about.

ok here it is… well i was a little thrown off by seeing gambit in wolverines origin but this can actually help out x4.

ok so after seeing san francisco almost totally destroyed the us government is ready to do something about the mutants . now seeing how powerful they really can be, senator kelly hires an outside agency ran by trask and gyrich to come up with an idea of how to capture mutants. so they create the sentinels. so the sentinels go out and do their job and they start kidnapping mutants. and one of the mutants they kidnap is rogue. so the x-man are summoned by xavier (who is still alive in my version) to try to save her. but they fail. so wolverine comes out and says he knows a guy from his past who is a master thief and can break into any building or establishment without getting caught. and his name is gambit. so wolverine goes out to louisiana and tracks down gambit for his help. with a little convincing of some money and some great cuban cigars gambit agrees. so gambit goes to ny to help the x-man. gambit is successful in breaking in and rescuing rogue( but it wasnt an easy mission). gambit becomes very attractive to rogue so he decides to stick around the x-men. xavier feels that the sentinels are a threat not only to mutants but to society so he orders the xmen to destroy the sentinels and their base. so there is a final battle between the x-men and the sentinels and the x-men succeed.

    x men
    wolverine,gambit,cyclops,rogue,beast,storm, xavier

bad guys. senator kelly , trask , gyrich and the sentinels.

this movie would be the closest one to the comics and i believe it would bring back a lot of faith in us fans. what do you guys think?

  9. Okay, it’s funny….

When I first heard that Taylor K. was going to be gambit, I was kind of sad. I like Taylor, especially on FNL, but him as Gambit??? HECK NO!!!

So, a couple of weeks ago, I was web surfing Gambit as usual and saw a couple of pics I’ve never seen of him. He was in a fedora looking hat, a dress shirt and his hair was shaggy and down. He reminded me of someone from the 40′s Gangster era.

Then I finally looked at the movie trailer. I usually dont like to look at movie trailers for Super-Hero type movies because the trailer can f**k it up for me. I saw Taylor as Gambit and well….he looked like Gambit did in the picture surprisingly. Okay….but where were his red eyes? And I’m a cajun girl to the fullest, born and bred in Louisiana and as God as my witness, if he f**ks up the accent, I will swear off these movies forever.

Oh yeah…great blog Rob. Enjoyed your insights dude. You took some of the words right out of my mouth.

  10. Right now all I can hope is that the director treats us to a special surprise when it comes to Gambit’s eyes when the film comes out May 1st.

I was more than excited when I heard they were finally casting Gambit in the movie. Taylor Kitsch seems to be a good pick for a young and brooding Gambit for this leg of the franchise. He can act and has lots of facial similarities with the current comic book version. However, I was upset by the trailer and stills showing Gambit without his trademark black and red eyes. It’s part of his look and his appeal in the comic books.

They were able to pull off the eyes of Mystique and Nightcrawler with special contacts in the previous X-films so…what the hell happened with Gambit’s eyes?

I hate to sound like a jerk because I have always been a huge X-Men fan and supported the X-films, but with the technology, special effects, and make-up available today, the crew could have done something about Gambit’s eyes for the film.

I persoanlly think that’s what the X-fans are dying to see as a challenge Hollywood would overcome and bring to life for the audience. I, like many other X-fans, will see the movie regardless, but if there isn’t a plot twist that ultimately shows Gambit’s trademark red and black eyes, we X-fans will be utterly disappointed.

Hugh and Taylor – Good luck and please don’t disappoint us!

  11. As a Storm fan and lover for many many too many years, and having seen Halle Berry DESTROY her… Actual Quote:
Halle: “Does Storm HAVE to have white hair? I mean really? They wigs are just horrible.”
And we ALL know what happened to the African accent.

So to all Gambit and Deadpool fans — I hope they do you justice. I’m still waiting for mine!
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!!

  12. i’am more exited to see gambit in the new x-men movie, than wolverine.

  13. @ henry

late response by me, but same here :)

    @ Queen of Wakanda,

I feel your pain – Storm is one of the greatest X/Marvel characters there is and I was disappointed with how her character (and Cyclops) was treated in the trilogy.

At least we can expect a remake in a few years, heh ;)

  14. Heh, I see you worrying the character might be screwed up in this movie. Well, we get Gambit with red eyes and him throwing cards, so that’s a bit of a relief, eh? ;) Can’t wait for the movie to come out.

  15. I still want to see him with red and black eyes as he does in the comics. if thedid it for Mystique and Nightcrawler, they could have done it here too. Bryan Singer’s departure messed up the X-Men franchise. We will have to wait like 10 to 20 years for Marvel Studios to get it right when Fox Studios’ license expires.

  16. btw gambit does have red and black eyes in the film, but only whe he uses his powers

  17. I appreciate the clarification, but all true Gambit fans know that having red and black eyes only whe he uses his powers in the film just isn’t the same. I will see the movie because i want to see wolvie and gambit, but I will wait and see if the movie sways me otherwise. Enjoy!

  18. Based on his brief dialogue from the Official Site, Gambit DOES have an accent, but not nearly as strong as his cartoon charater’s.

  19. I only saw this movie because Gambit was in it. The movie was horribly shallow with character interactions that were so depthless I wanted to fall asleep.

The savign grace was that atleast Gambit was in it and I got to see him. I hope they make a Gambit movie. THAT would be a blockbuster

  20. I cannot tell you how INSANELY pissed of I am how Hollywood and seemingly NO ONE can get it right. Sawyer from Lost IS GAMBIT and they use this guy Taylor who has no appeal, no resemblence, Wolverine is even taller than him in the ending scenes. No trench coat, and he gets knocked out by an elbow from Wolverine in the alley scene, just like in the cartoon, Gambit throws a card, gets knocked out and we dont see him until the end while Wolverine runs the show. Someone needs to seriously talk to people in Hollywood and make a Gambit movie using Sawyer from Lost. See the episode of Lost: Confidence Man, season 2 I believe. Trust me, if you are a Gambit fan or someone who needs convincing that Holloway IS GAMBIT, watch that episode. The episode is like lterally watching a short movie about gambit himself. Please Hollywood listen to our cries, Gambit is a character that demands respect and WILL have a HUGE following if given the chance. He is extremely interesting and has all the back story to support a series. It needs to be dark, it needs to be done right, and it absolutely 100% MUST have Josh Holloway play the role. Otherwise, dont even bother, and keep Gambit to the universe where he exists in the minds of his fans, the REAL gambit, in the comics, especially his own series. My favorite, and I feel really captures the essence of Gambit is the old comic with Gambit and Wolverine: Victims. Now that IS gambit and wolverine, a perfect match. The PERFECT illustration and writing. PERFECTLY done.
