wolverine 2 liev schreiber sabretooth The Future of Sabretooth in the X Men Films

In our last discussion of the story and characters of Wolverine 2, we talked a little about Liev Schreiber and what his thoughts were on the sequel.

At the time, he seemed not too interested in putting his body through all the physical work again, now that he’s over 40, but he did say that he’s very interested in seeing how the character of Victor Creed goes from how he portrayed him, to what we saw of the animalistic Sabretooth from Bryan Singer’s first X-Men movie.

Now, it seems that he’s changed his mindset and is in fact interested in returning to the role.

Schreiber, although a strange casting decision initially, was arguably the best part of the highly disappointing Wolverine origins adaptation. In a movie full of weak plot points, bad characterization and a terrible waste of great source material, Liev’s take on Victor Creed was one of the most enjoyable parts of the film.

Unfortunately, the story didn’t make much sense for him in the end and X-Men Origins: Wolverine concluded with Hugh Jackman’s character losing his memory and Sabretooth completely fine, running off after their team-up. From what was shown, Sabretooth has no idea that his brother doesn’t know who he is anymore. Knowing Victor’s nature and his relationship with his brother, more specifically his desire to compete with and be better than Wolverine, he wouldn’t just disappear – we know at some point, Victor would seek out his brother.

So, what happens to him between the end of that movie and where we see him in X-Men? For the most part, all of the films so far and the ones in planning are all sharing the same continuity which means this needs to be explained.

With the sequel following our favorite clawed mutant on his adventures in Japan, the story doesn’t really allow for Sabretooth to partake. However, Schreiber seems interested again and has an idea of what we could see.

“There’s been some smatterings of conversation about it, but nothing concrete yet… I had a ball doing it, so I’d do it again.”

  1. Assuming they remain true to the films continuity, sabertooth cant be in wolverine 2 since logan doesnt recognize him in X1. Maybe they will include victor in Magneto Origins…. and if people thinks its all that important to show how he becomes more animalistic (X1 victor-which i ont see as a major issue) they could somehow incorporate Magnetos early designs for the mutation inducing machine from X1, but it goes wrong and effects victor, also wiping his memory (since victor should still remember logan in X1) perhaps that could be what causes the rift between xavier and magneto

  2. It’s important, but I’d be suprised if Fox actually touches on it.

  3. I think your a little hard on the Wolverine film. I mean it wasn’t great and it was a bit of a let down, but it wasn’t as bad as your making it sound.

  4. In the conceit of the film’s universe perhap’s Victor and Sabretooth are two different people altogether. It’s the movies, anything is possible.

  5. @ Daniel F

    I agree completley

  6. Wolverine wasnt bad, fanboys were just mad.

  7. While I agree with you Oscar that Wolverine wasn’t really that bad. I can’t stand the over use of the term fanboys. There are plenty of people who aren’t huge wolverine fans that didn’t like the film. I have friends who watch the movies, but have never read a comic in their life that thought wolverine was bad. In fact I know more comic fans who defend wolverine than bash it. Using the term fanboys should be more reserved when they are over critical about things that would only matter to comic fans. When it comes to Wolverine though they are being very critical more towards things that matter in film in general than small little things. Fanboys would say the film is terrible because of the persons natural hair color or because the costume is changed. The complains in this article are about character development and plot. He’s being overly critical but critical about the right things. Not a fanboy issue. These days though anytime you don’t like a movie based on a comic property instead of striving to make the film better by acknowledging it’s mistakes people just call you a fanboy and move on their way.

  8. I was talking about the ones who complained about Deadpool :)

  9. Yes, Liev has to be sabretooth again, and not tyler maine, and hopefully he’ll be in the magneto movie, but not in a second wolverine, because it’s the least most interesting one,we just need one wolverine film dudes.

  10. I would rather know how Deadpool grows a new head :P

  11. The movie WAS disappointing. Not only to Deadpool “fanboys” but people who actually wanted to see a well-written movie from beginning to ending. I had no problems with the beginning and the middle but the ending left me very, very cold.

Regardless, I agree wholeheartedly that Mr. Schreiber was the highlight of the movie and he should be offered an opportunity to reprise the role at some point – if not in Wolverine 2, then Wolverine 3 (and you guys KNOW it will be made.)

I’m optimistic that the second Wolverine movie won’t be as bad as the first, and the third will probably be in demand. I can’t see Jackman being Wolverine any more than that, though.

  12. Ah yes the old “Fanboy bashers” argument…. it just gets old listening to people who are willing to swallow the pablum complain about the “fanboys” when without those same fanboys a large majority of these movies wouldn’t be made or seen at all. I don’t think it’s unreasonable that the source materials should actually be used to make a movie instead of having hacks steal(and yes I said steal, rights paid for or not what many of the HACKS do is akin to buying a Mercedes Benz, taking the Emblem off the hood, slapping it on a rustbucket VW and then act as though it’s still a Mercedes. The rights are to use the character, not rape it. ) someone elses character idea and write a second rate script. If they were actually GOOD writers, they’d have their OWN books and characters.

  13. Liv shouldn’t do it unless fox steps away from the franchise but we all know that’s not happening.

  14. I didn’t expect Origins to stay 100% true to the comics, but it couldn’t even stay consistent with the other X-Men movies. That said, I would’t mind seeing Liev come back in a Magneto/First Class/X4 somewhere down the line.

  15. I though the casting of Victor Creed was really….REALLY bad. Had to be the worst part of the first film.

  16. I am a fanboy and I did see problems in the movie that didn’t conincide with the comic but that was not my main complaint. The movie was just mildly entertaining to me. I like action as well as the next guy but when even the action is subpar, you have a problem. The effects manager should have been the same guy who did the effects for The Matrix, District 9 or any of the other movies with great effects. It was a great idea that was executed badly.

  17. Tyler Maine playing Victor Creed….sorry My bad! At least Mr. Schreiber can act!!!!!

  18. @john taylor – you didn’t watch the workprint that leaked online, by any chance? ;)

I’m no fanboy, but is it wrong to assume that Wolverine stayed true to the comics, more so than the first X-Men movie? In that case I’d think that Bryan Singer screwed up, with the whole Wolverine-Sabretooth relationship. If he read the comics (which I haven’t) he would’ve known that Wolverine didn’t know Sabretooth, but Sabretooth did know Wolverine.

  19. @Rhaemye
Oh man, don’t start that debate again! :-)

I just had to laugh in that first action scene (which I thought was pretty good mostly) when Agent Zero’s clips slowly came down into the gun but just before they got there, the clips shifted, not fell into, the gun. I also thought it hilarious that the only blood in a mutant-killing-machine-with-blades-coming-from-his-hands movie was pigs blood.

  20. It actually was that bad, though :(

I don’t think all those critics on Rotten Tomatoes are “fanboys” and they tore it apart – It’s the worst rated X-Film yet.

From a basic storytelling perspective and technical standpoint, this movie was not good which makes no sense considering the money and talent involved and have the experience of X3 before it.

Sure, you can take fun from watching Jackman, Reynolds & Schreiber but that can only go so far.

This is coming from a defender of the movie, btw. I had fun watching it but only to a certain extent. Most of my friends, many of which don’t know much about X-Men or the other characters thought it was terrible and I didn’t.

This movie was built on someone’s idea of set pieces but even those were not well planned out at all. Think about Kahless’ example above. That entire sequence didn’t make any sense, not just the corny action of Zero, but how the characters were utilized. Why do they even have a team, if one guy at a time is going in show off their movies.

  21. never say never there is always a way to make it work.here is how you do it.ok have victor after logan for stryker, he finds him and calls stryker to tell him he found him. victor confronts wolverine and his rage takes over and he take victor out for some reason or silver samuria does. stryker show up and sends victors body or victor back to the lab for experimentation, but he has brought two other mutants or more sauron being one and omega red the other, i would like to see chamber, beak, and husk in one of these films as well maybe he can bring them with him to.anyways at the end of the film have sabrtoothe escapeing the lab and meeting up with magneto and mystique.

  22. Well … I guess that settles it.

  23. Oscar!!! Everyone complains about what they did to deadpool. I actually enjoyed the movie and I’m upset about how bad they screwed up. Not only was it nothing like the comic, but it was just bad writing. It was dumb progression for the character. Forget everything you know about deadpool go in to this film empty and what they did to that charecter that Ryan Reynolds played was dumb. Also I’ve seen lots of people bash the film and while Deadpool almost always makes the list its almost never the number one reason in fact it’s usually one of the smaller problems. This wasn’t a fanboy issue. The film had a lot of problems. I enjoyed and thought it was a decent enough movie certainly better than X3, but still it had lots of problems.

  24. “I enjoyed and thought it was a decent enough movie”

    Has hell frozen over? :)

  25. I’m not sure what the means ink

  26. @ Daniel,

If that’s how you actually feel, we completely agree on this :)

  27. Sorry, my encryption software was running in the foreground.

Like Rob I actually agree with you on this.

    Doesn’t happen often. :)

  28. You mean we’re actually comming to a concensus on a movie? Oh WOW, the world is truly coming to an end! :-D
