If you’ve been following movie headlines these past few days, you’ve no doubt come across the buzz relating to J.J. Abrams’ top secret movie trailer that’s premiering this weekend alongside Iron Man 2. The film is titled Super 8 and at first, it was reported as a prequel of sorts to Cloverfield, until J.J. Abrams explained that it had nothing to do with his 2008 monster movie.

Now comes a full detailed description of what exactly is depicted in the Super 8 trailer from someone who’s seen it. If you wish to keep the surprise and go in to Iron Man 2 not knowing what to expect, you may want to skip over this play-by-play of the trailer.

/Film has the exclusive full description of the trailer and here are the key points of what we can expect to see:

  • Trailer is a minute and a half in length
  • Starts with a fully-loaded train speeding across the screen
  • Text Appears: “In 1979, The U.S. Air Force Closed A Section of AREA 51.”
  • Camera pans up from railroad crossing to present light moving in background
  • Text: “All The Materials Were To Be Transported To A Secure Facility In Ohio.”
  • Lights revealed to be an older truck and it skids before heading onto the train tracks
  • Text: “From Producer Steve Spielberg”
  • The truck collides with train and explodes – train completely derails – massive explosions
  • Text: “And Director J.J. Abrams”
  • Camera slowly explores wreckage until one train car is shown fully intact
  • Text: “Next Summer”
  • The train car sparks
  • Text: “It Arrives”
  • Train car is revealed to have the US Airforce logo and the wheeled handle begins to spin as the door bends out from the inside
  • Trailer then cuts to a shot of an 8mm camera lens
  • Text: “Super 8″

There are some credits with the Bad Robot logo at the end and the source also explains that it feels like a classic Spielberg project.

“It definitely feels like a late 1970’s Spielberg film, think Close Encounters of a Third Kind. I’m excited to see what the actual movie is about.”

Super 8 is another monster movie unrelated to Cloverfield. Since what “it” is can be contained inside of a single train car, it is nowhere near in size to the big ugly Cloverfield monster. From the description however, you can definitely see why many speculated this is a prequel to that movie.

What if J.J. is throwing everyone in a loop and this monster happens to be the same one from Cloverfield, just smaller and younger since it’s based (or possibly starts) in 1979? This would be a cool way to set up a prequel and everyone expects a franchise to be made out of Cloverfield

The entire “Cloverfield” project was a codename for the video (the movie we saw in theaters) kept by the United States Department of Defense. Perhaps Super 8 explains the origins and presents more footage maintained by the military. I think I might like that idea a bit more than another separate monster movie but I’m excited and intrigued either way.

What are your thoughts on the trailer and will you be checking it out this weekend?

  1. For as much as I loved Cloverfield, I’m very glad that this isn’t a sequel/prequel to that film. I’m of the opinion that the Cloverfield world doesn’t need expanding and should stay as a stand alone movie.

That said, I’m anxious to see that J.J. Abrams has cooked up next and I hope it turns out as good as Cloverfield.

    • OMG GUYS DONT U GET IT???? \\”SUPER 8″ if u pause it at 1:22 there is a screen shot of a boys face! dont u get it??? its a super alien like 8 year old kid!

The CAPS represent my thoughts, this is awesome. I wish he’d take over the Superman project, he’d make it so good.

  3. I hope it’s a seperate thing from Cloverfield. Either way it is exciting, especially because Steven Spielberg is involved!

  4. My insider tells me it’s a train car full of super 8 film reels documenting family vacations of US military scientists. Family of 5 in a deep grotto with no light. Family of 3 reading at the library and a workaholic couple camping out in the lab eating smores by the light of a bunsen burner… all of whom are bitten by the same Black-Ops bred vampire bat, join forces and go on vacation together from then on. But only at night… and crammed into 1 coffin during the day. 2 are claustrophopic and Dr. Terence has OCD so he keeps trying to open the lid to see if there really is a sun anymore.

    • So I guess it’s the Super 8 film reels opening the door and bashing it from the inside ;)

  5. so it an alien film, E.T meet The Close Encounter meet 8mm film!

  6. I love JJ purely for bringing Lost into my life…

but i utterly LOATHE cloverfield, probably the worst movie I have seen in the past 10 years… i hope this new monster/military coverup flick is completly seperate

  7. Me, I think it’s about aliens that come to Earth with a Dyslexia Ray…note that the image is flipped (Yellow Burlington Northern train car)….

  8. I’m still hoping this is a prequel to Cloverfield… I really enjoyed that movie.

  9. This has got to be the worst fake crash ever created. How could all the lumber end up like that in the picture and in two radically different locations and so much of it intact when you surround it with so much mangled metal? Flipping the picture helps clear some confusion in it but what’s the dark odd shaped layer supposed to represent? Is this suppose to be a still from a super 8mm camera? Looks and sounds pretty inauspicious to be anything more than B grade material. Doesn’t excite me, I’ll wait to my normal movie day to go see…

  10. Looks interesting, already I’m getting excited for it.

  11. SERIOUS! JJ can do no wrong, and with the BRILLIANCE that was Cloverfield (Still the most orginal idea in the past five years with the exception of District 9)…..and the screen pic above, an exact camera for frame ratio shot that is a scene in “Cloverfield.” is a dead giveaway. The Clover Community is going WILD with the comparisions! ( however this could be another reference to Slusho that has been a running line for JJ in almost everything he does.) I am loving watching Mr. Abrams grow into such a talent. The craft needs to develop more fine film makers for the next generation. This blew me away at IM2!!!!

  12. Maybe someone has already commented on this, but … if you listen to the radio communications that are going back and forth, it sounds like one guy ask about the other’s ETA, and the voice responds something is “intact” and so forth. I swear it sounds like he says “clover is intact”. Give a listen.

  13. Super 8 being filmed in my area of WV, saw some of the filming. Appears 3 kids on bicycles with a super 8 camera film something they werent supposed to see. Has seens of cars chasing Dakota fannings (sorry dont know her name) little sister on a bicycle. Coach from show Friday night lights was seen in town. Some Rumors that Brad Pitt was in town but not confirmed. Did see a scene of a US airforce rescue helicopter and a guy with a flame thrower shooting flame in a field. Should be interesting

  14. Slight of hand one this one. I just saw the trailer. I could think of only one thing as it unfolded. Doomsday. Doomsday. Doomsday. As in the beast who killed Superman over 10 years ago. The title only confirmed it.
