Not long from now, theaters will once again be filled with Frozen fans eager to watch Anna and Elsa's story continue and see what happened to rest of Arendelle in the years after the first movie. In fact, Frozen 2 premieres on November 22, so we're only a couple of months out from Disney's coolest animated feature to date.
Despite the hype surrounding the follow-up to their biggest animated blockbuster to date, Disney has kept many of the sequel's major details tightly under wraps. That being said, we've collected everything we can find to give you the latest up-to-date details on Frozen 2 and what it could be about. It's time to journey back to Arendelle. Here is everything we know about Frozen 2 so far.
The Second Film Is Built Off The First
Frozen 2's creators confirmed that the sequel will complete the narrative introduced in the first movie. Rather than telling a completely different story, the directors decided to move in a direction where having seen the original film will help you understand the second chapter much better. Additionally, it will answer lots of questions that were left unanswered.
Though this may be true, the movie actually takes place three years after the first. It will be interesting to find out what has happened during this time and how it all ties together.
Frozen 2 Features New Characters
As revealed through the trailers and according Kristen Bell who voices Anna, there will be a fresh set of characters in the Frozen sequel. Though we don’t know much about them, we do know what a couple of them will look like.
The trailer gives us a glimpse of a girl with pulled-back curly red hair and a blond boy being blown up with the leaves. We’ve also seen pictures of a character named Lieutenant Matthias. Did we mention the trailer shows Sven apparently leading a herd of reindeer friends he's been hiding from us?
There’s A Star-Studded Voice Cast
In addition to Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, and Santino Fontana are all returning to voice their characters. Namely, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, and Hans (yes, he's back), respectively. However, this time they will be joined by newcomers Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown.
Brown will be voicing the aforementioned Lieutenant Matthias while Evan Rachel Wood is set to voice Queen Iduna, the mother of Anna and Elsa who according to the first movie, died during an ill-fated voyage.
Anna And Elsa’s Parents Will Play A Role In The Adventure
In the first movie, we see the queen and king of Arendelle die in a shipwreck. Or so we thought.
It’s still hihgly possible that they didn’t make it, being that Wood’s character has only been confirmed to be a part of a flashback. However, we’re not eliminating the possibility that the parents are somehow alive. At the very least, Disney’s confirmed that they will influence the plot in one way or another. The clip of Elsa running into the sea (where her parents’ shipwreck happened to occur) has our curiosity peaked.
The Origin Of Elsa’s Powers Will Be Revealed
The film’s directors, Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, confirmed that the upcoming sequel will ask the question “Why does Elsa have powers?” Boy, are we excited to have this question answered because no single wonder has plagued Frozen fans more.
While we don't know the characters' full motivation to embark on an adventure, we know that the origin of Elsa's magic plays a huge part in it. Elsa's control of ice in the previous movie was just hand waved as part of the movie's fantasy trappings, so we can't wait to find out what exactly they mean.
There Will Be New Music
The husband and wife team that wrote the original Frozen songs have graced the sequel with their musical talents yet again. Even better, Chrisophe Beck, who scored the original film, is also making a return.

Though the music has yet to be released, fans at the D23 expo got a preview of it. Elsa will be singing a new ballad in the film entitled “Into the Unknown,” Queen Iduna will enchant Elsa and Anna with a lullaby, and many of the leads will be chiming together for a song entitled “Some Things Never Change.”
Autumn Will Play A Part
As evidenced by the trailer, summer and winter aren't going to be the only seasons linked to the Frozen franchise. There are many clips of the characters looking out over trees and watching leaves swirl around. In fact, even the animated Frozen 2 logo has maple leaves rushing through it.
Fans speculate that the red-headed character we already mentioned, who right now is only seen in a brief clip filled with autumn foliage, has fall, wind, or leaf-related powers of some sort. This might not be true, but the speculation is strong and not unwarranted.
The Movie Features New Scandinavian Mythology
If you’ve been wondering who or what the floaty water horse in the trailer is, we have the answers that you're looking for. According to the film’s official synopses, the horse is a “Nokk,” a water spirit in the form of a horse that protects the forests’ secrets. This creature is based on mythology found in Germanic, Welsh, and Scandinavian lore.
What is presumably the same horse is seen in a different trailer scene, however, this time leaping in front of Elsa in the form of tiny snow particles.
Elsa’s Ice Powers Are Stronger
At the end of the first film, Elsa understood that “love” was the answer to all her problems and instantly melted the ice-covered wonderland that she created. That being said, the happy ending of Frozen has been met with new conflicts that have required Elsa to challenge her ice-forming abilities.
The first teaser showed Elsa rushing into the ocean while harnessing her ice powers, and other subsequent clips have shown her intensely whooshing around snow. She seems to have way more control over her powers, yet she also seems to be using them in ways she never has before.
Things Will Never Be The Same
To quote co-director Jennifer Lee, “In the end, nothing will be the same.” In case you’re wondering what the heck that means, you’re not alone. We don’t have many details as to what’s about to unfold in front of us. However, we can conclude that the Arendelle we'll be left with will be completely different than the one we started with.
Will Elsa’s parents return? Will the new characters have some major effect on the kingdom? Will Kristoff and Anna (as hinted in one clip) be engaged? Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer until we get the answers.
