Fright Night Farrell Yelchin First Fright Night Images Emerge Online [Updated]

[Update: Check out new hi-res images from Fright Night!]

Colin Farrell and Star Trek…er, star Anton Yelchin will square off this summer in the remake of the ’80s horror/comedy Fright Night, and today the first images from the DreamWorks production have hit the Net.

So, at first glance does Fright Night seem like a worthy remake or a yet another unnecessary rehash brought to us courtesy of the circular Hollywood thought process? Find out for yourself.

For those of you who never saw the original film (either because you missed it or just weren’t born yet), the story revolves around a dorky high school kid named Charley Brewster (Yelchin) who discovers that his next door neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Farell), is actually a nefarious vampire (yup, another vampire flick). With the help of this best friend ‘Evil’ Ed Thompson (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and the popular girl in school (Imogen Poots), Charlie must get Jerry…before Jerry gets him.

Truthfully these images don’t reveal much of anything at all – aside from the fact that Mintz-Plasse will once again be channeling his lovable nerd persona to play ‘Evil’ Ed. But hey, I do love some McLovin’, so that’s all good with me. Aside from the header image above, check out the new hi-res images from Fright Night below:

So, Yelchin is a good actor, Farrell (for all the flack he sometimes gets) is a good actor, Poots has been good and memorable in what few roles I’ve seen her in (V for Vendetta, 28 Weeks Later) and as stated, I’m not yet tired of Mintz-Plasse’s nerd schtick. I say all that to say: the cast for the film (including former Doctor Who David Tennant and acclaimed actress Toni Collette) seems pretty solid, so even if the director, Craig Gillespie (Mr. Woodcock) doesn’t immediately make you feel at ease, at least you can have faith that the performances will be adequate.

It’s also a good thing that the screenplay writer, Marti Noxon, has experience balancing humor and horror, having written for shows like Buffy and Angel. That resume saves me from overly worrying about this remake trying to position itself in the Twilight lane, since it seems it will aim for the sort of tone that I actually enjoyed back when I was so caught up in Joss Whedon’s universe of supernatural monsters and their hunters.

What did you think of the photos?

Fright Night will be in theaters on August 19th.

  2. Oh man, this is going to be so good. Love the pics, cast is great, can’t wait!

  3. I can’t wait for this remake.
The original Fright Night is one of my favorite movies and I have a lot of faith in this remake with it’s great cast.

  4. I am Evil Ed. Chiga chiga yeeeeaaahhhh!!

  5. Where’s the Tennant pics?

  6. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, You talentless hollywood hacks are at it again, You suck beyond all that has sucked before , The 80′s gave us such awesome iconic movies like Pumpkinhead , The Lost Boys , An American Werewolf In London ,The Terminator ,A nightmare On Elm Street, The Howling, The monster Squad , Friday The 13th , Predator , Near Dark , The Evil Dead , Hellraiser and Now we are subjected to another remake of another 80′s piece of awesomeness, Wow – really – A Fright Night Remake !
Didnt you trained chimpanzee’s at the top of the hollywood tower learn that remaking great 80′s movies is a really really really bad idea ! , Whats next – A Remake of such classics as THE THING OR HALLOWEEN OR A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET , FRIDAY THE 13TH, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE , THE FOG , THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, THE WICKER MAN , NIGHT OF THE DEMONS.
Hey Guys – thats a really bad idea , wow and you got bullseye ( sorry i mean colin farrell) to play the main bad guy , cos thats allways a winner !
I think im gonna quit my job and head to the hollywood hills cos u bunch o losers arent obviously able to come up with anything fresh or original , I mean lets be honest – there has been a few a decent remakes ( Dawn of the dead ) but the remake game is not a winning formula – right !
I am dreading to think who is gonna play peter vincent the famous vampire killer (since were on the subject of bad we should probably hope for someone like charlie sheen ) !
And whats with casting uri russian fella from star trek and terminator 4 , hes not a bad actor but couldnt we at least try to get some one a little like the original actor from the original flick i.e shia ladouch or what ever the hell his name is !
wow – im goin now cos im just to upset any more to be rational or level headed , I mean why dont we just remake Predator with THE SITUATION as Dutch or maybe redo The FOG with bad c.g.i – OH wait a minute!

    • Wow. I really can not believe I just read that.. By the way, his name is Shia LaBeouf. I think you should quit your job and head to Hollywood to yell at people. It’d be hilarious.

      • @Sin,

We both know what he meant by misspelling Shia’s surname. No need to give a smart ass comment to a well wrote rant.

        • “Well wrote rant”… It’s acting supposed to be “well written rant”, but I’m sure you knew that.

As for his “rant” being well written.. Am I the only one who noticed his spelling and punctuation errors? This is not a “well wrote rant”, and Shia LaBeouf is a very good actor.

Thanks for the comment about my “smart a$$ comment” though. I didn’t even consider it to be “smart a$$”.

          • “actually” supposed to be… Woops.

        • Well written mate, not well wrote

    • @John,

    • HALLOWEEN,NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET , FRIDAY THE 13TH, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE , THE FOG , THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, and THE WICKER MAN have all had remakes. I am a fan of the originals, but I liked the remakes as well. Special effects are lot more advanced from 20 years ago, so I do not mind a remake here and there of some of my favorite films. Especially if the film if it invovles special effects and such. I do understand why others do not like remakes though.

    • I totally agree with you!!! I loved the original FRIGHT NIGHT … and just can’t imagine anyone else playing the original characters … I also heard that they’re not even having this remake take place in the original setting … supposedly they’re taking it to Vegas or so I heard … why even steal the movie title FRIGHT NIGHT … since it doesn’t seem to hardly even be following the original storyline … and while on this subject … did you happen to see what they did to Night of the Demons? The remake totally sucked!!! Of course, kids of this generation might think it’s pretty cool, not having seen the original, but for those of us who saw the original and appreciate the horror classics of the 80′s … it doesn’t even compare!!!!

  7. While I loved the original, Im not quite sure what to make of this one yet. I like the cast, as actors, but am having a hard time picturing them as these specific characters. I’ll need to see some footage, I guess, before I can get behind this one.

  8. Yeah, I want to see David Tennant as Peter Vincent!!

    I can’t wait!!

  9. WOW! I didn’t know this was being remade. I always loved the original and it was a staple for me and friends and family to watch this on VHS over and over again. I hope this turns out as good as the original. We’ll see but doesn’t sound like it?

  10. I will probably go and see this even though it has Colin Ferell in it. But I suppose over acting and pretending he gives a damn should be second nature to Ferell by now so he should be a convincing vampire.

  11. I got invited to screen this tonight but I’m going to pass. No thank you, even if it’s a free show it doesn’t seem worth the gas it would take to drive there.

    • The original was awesome. Colin Farrel as the bad guy… BIG QUESTION MARK on that one…. Bullseye etc etc lol.

But, unfortunately for me, I’m a bit of a Dr Who geek (I swear I still don’t know how that happened, god dam you BBC), so I will take the pain-staking time to download it when it comes out. Which is approx. about 2 hours for a BlueRay Rip lol.

      • Wow. You do know that it is illegal to download movies off of Torrent sites?

And by you recognizing Colin Farrell as “Bullseye” it must mean you have not seen any other movie with him in it. S.W.A.T, Miami Vice, The Recruit, Minority Report, Phone Booth, Tigerland – all of those movies he was great in. You should broaden your movie knowledge and watch a couple of those.

Now that was a smart a$$ comment.

    • @ChimpanJesus

You missed out last night. It was a great opportunity. Seeing a free screening wasn’t worth the gas? Are you kidding me? Can’t say much about what I saw, but I dint regret the drive the wife and I took from Riverside to partake in the experience.

  12. Yes yes, but will they remake Frightnight II ????? Was that any good? I saw it but can hardly remember it. Question answered I guess.

    • Fright Night 2 was descent. It wasn’t as good as the first, but it was good.

  13. Fright Night (original) has ALWAYS been my favorite Vampire movie, The Lost boys comes in a VERY close 2nd. At first i rolled my eyes at the title of this blog, thinking ughg another remake.. BUT after reading Colin Farrell was cast as the Vampire Neighbor, Jerry Dandrige, I am very excited to watch this movie!

Fright Night Made me fall in Teen lust with Chris Sarandon…The only other actor who could possibly take over that role, in my eyes, is Colin Farrell.

    Happy Happy!!

  14. As far I’ve seen, the actors seem to be solid enough for a decent remake.. And true, Colin Farrell is always a good choice for a villain…

  15. Is that… IS THAT MCLOVIN?!?!!?!
