Just yesterday we reported on new details about Fright Night, the upcoming remake of the '80s vampire film. We learned that the setting had changed from the quiet suburbs to the busy city of Las Vegas and that Chris Sarandon (who played the vampire in the original) would have a supporting role as a "Chris Angle-type." Also, we found out the film will have a more badass vampire vibe than we've seen from the likes of The Twilight Saga.

Today come more details about the Fright Night remake, this time a couple of new casting additions. Heat Vision Blog is reporting that David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Christopher Mintz-Plassse (Superbad, Kick-Ass) are both joining the cast.

Tennant will play Peter Vincent, a character who was an actor (played by Roddy McDowall) on a late-night horror TV show in the original Fright Night. However, in the remake they're changing Vincent into a Vegas magician whose show revolves around horror movie imagery. He claims he knows about vampires but when the terrorized teenage boy, Charlie (Anton Yelchin), goes to him for help about his new "neighbor," Vincent isn't exactly helpful. Tennant's casting quashes any speculation that Sarandon might be playing Vincent, something which would have been an ironic nod to the original.

Although Tennant has obviously enjoyed massive success with both UK and U.S. audiences with his stint as Doctor Who, Fright Night will mark his first big role in America. He starred in a pilot called Rex Is Not Your Lawyer for NBC but the show was never picked up. I'm sure Doctor Who fans would be glad if he became as successful in the States as he is in the UK film and TV industry.

Mintz-Plasse will be "Evil Ed", who you may remember is the main character's best friend who, "feels slighted that Charlie has left his nerdy past behind and thus joins the vampire’s coven." His casting points to the fact that this remake will be keeping the same horror/comedy vibe of the original, as opposed to going for pure horror as it initially seemed. Either that or Mintz-Plasse will ditch his comedic ways - but somehow I doubt it.

Usually when a remake of a horror film pops up the new version almost never reaches the level of the original. However, at this early stage the talent behind Fright Night is very impressive and is at least a good sign that this particular remake will be one of the better ones.

What do you think of David Tennant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse joining the Fright Night remake? Good casting choices or are they not suited to the material?

Tennant and Mintz-Plasse join an already impressive cast that includes Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator Salvation), Colin Farrell, Toni Collette and (possibly) Chris Sarandon. The film is written by Marti Noxon (Buffy) and will be directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl).

Fright Night will likely shoot in July and will presumably be released in 2011.
