It looks like Freddy Krueger is coming to video game Dead By Daylight – which should be a dream come true for A Nightmare On Elm Street fans. Freddy has become a major horror icon since his appearance in Wes Craven’s original movie, where he was played by Robert Englund. The actor would go on to play the role in six sequels, a television series, a number of music videos and finally in crossover move Freddy Vs Jason in 2003.

A Nightmare On Elm Street was then remade in 2010, which cast Jackie Earle Haley as the dream slasher. While the movie was somewhat successful, it pulled in almost universally negative reviews and a sequel failed to happen. Despite occasional whispers about rebooting the series once more, there currently doesn’t seem to be another movie in the works.

That said, a new teaser for Dead By Daylight – titled Don’t Fall Asleep – all but confirms everybody’s favorite sleep stalker will be coming to the game. Past DLC for Dead By Deadlight has added The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface and Halloween’s Michael Myers, so the game has form when it comes to adding famous movie monsters.

It will be interesting to see which version of Freddy turns up. The character has previously appeared as a guest fighter in the Mortal Kombat games, but his appearance leaned closer to Jackie Earle Haley version. Fans of the series would no doubt be delighted if Robert Englund made some kind of return to the role, but until the game’s version of Freddy is unveiled, this is just wishful thinking.

Freddy’s return will no doubt fuel speculation about his next movie appearance. It emerged recently that IT director Andy Muschetti considered a cameo appearance by the character as another form Pennywise takes; Krueger will also be making a quick cameo in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. With Pennywise becoming something of a horror icon himself, and the forthcoming Halloween reboot resurrecting Michael Myers again, New Line will almost surely be considering ways to bring the series back.

Whoever ends up donning the razor fingered glove will have a lot of pressure on their shoulders. Haley did his best with the material, but his take on Freddy wasn’t nearly as popular as Englund's. Englund has also ruled himself out of returning due to his age, though he did suggest Kevin Bacon for the role. For now, fans of icons like Freddy and Jason will have to turn to games like Dead By Daylight and Friday The 13th: The Game for their horror kicks.
