FOX is stepping up its X-Men presence on the small screen with The Gifted and now it has announced that the series is moving production on season 1 away from Dallas, Texas. The first X-Men series, Legion, launched in February to huge success, with a second season set for 2018. It was a trippy look at the wild world of David Haller’s (Dan Stevens) mind, and it was something totally new for the X-Men cinematic universe.

Next up is something that promises to be very different from Legion: The Gifted. Earlier this month, it was announced that the series had been ordered to series, with a timeslot set for Monday nights starting this fall. The show follows a family with mutant children, on the run and helped by the mutant underground. From the trailer, it looks like a much more straightforward action/adventure show than Legion, and promises to expand the X-Men universe even further.

Now, however, the show is looking for a new home, as it will no longer film in Texas. The news comes courtesy of the Dallas Film Commission, who posted to Facebook with the announcement that the show will be leaving the city. The reason for the move is given as running out of time to deal with the Texas Legislature, which has still to decide whether to continue the tax rebate program that the state has to encourage filming there.

Gifted X Men TV Show Polaris FOX’s The Gifted TV Series Moving Production From Dallas

The pilot for The Gifted was filmed in Dallas, but without the guarantee that the state’s film incentives would continue, it’s not surprising that the studio is looking for a new home. The incentives allowed for tax rebates of up to 20 percent of production costs for films and TV series made in Texas, but is currently up for debate as some politicians are calling for changes to be made to the state budget. Texas is not the only state with this kind of film incentive program — multiple states offer anything from grants to tax incentives and rebates, with the biggest incentives creating big film industries in certain areas.

Although The Gifted will not remain in Dallas, there are plenty of other options for a new home for the show. Without knowing exactly how much the setting plays into the series, it’s difficult to make a guess as to where it may end up, but as a show with the potential to become a massive, multi-season success, there is little doubt that any state with a film industry is will be looking to bring The Gifted on board.

The Gifted is expected to premiere on FOX this fall.
