Fox President Talks ‘Fringe,’ ‘Lie To Me’ & ‘Human Target’ Renewals

For months, fans of Fringe, Human Target and Lie to Me have been wondering whether or not their favorite series will return next fall.

With pilot season underway, television networks are examining their current television line-up and determining which shows will stay and which will be replaced by new series endeavors.

Considering Fox is one of the most cancellation-friendly networks with numerous under-performing fan-favorite series, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly stepped in to talk about the likelihood of Fringe, Lie to Me and Human Target returning for another season.

Most recently, Fringe made the move to Friday night. While the ratings have been slipping since its time-slot premiere, Reilly still seems pleased with its performance:

“I’m so psyched about it. It does go to show you the loyalty of the genre audience, when you get the right show. I’m so grateful to that audience; I’d like to shake their hands. We have a lot of passion for that show here.”

Even though this statement was made before Fringe’s second week of declining ratings, it’s hardly going to impact Reilly’s enthusiasm for the show. Unfortunately, for fans of Lie to Me and Human Target, his comments are less positive (if you read between the lines):

“We have some decisions to make about [Human Target] and Lie to Me as well. These shows are not being rejected. They’re doing a consistent and solid number. There are networks that would be happy to take those shows. We have to look at our shelf space.

Reilly’s statements about Human Target and Lie to Me appear to fall in line with what we previously said about Fox’s likelihood of picking up those series. Even though Lie to Me has been delivering higher ratings than Fringe, the core demographics of Fringe (ages 18-34) makes it a more appealing pick-up.

In terms of Reilly’s closing comments about evaluating Fox’s shelf space, the network’s entertainment president is talking about how many timeslots they’ll have available once the pilot season is over. If there’s enough room for Lie to Me and Human Target, they’ll likely be renewed… if not, they’re out.

What makes the decision even more difficult is the fact that out of all the other television networks, Fox has one of the most solid line-ups and rarely makes major changes. With most of the current series returning, that makes less room for new series and even less room for Lie to Me and Human Target.

When you add in the fact that Fox already has The X-Factor slated for next year and the Bones spin-off series, The Locator, is pretty much guaranteed a spot in the line-up (thanks to Hart Hanson’s dedicated fans), the chances of both Human Target and Lie to Me returning look grim. Not to mention the fact that Fox only has 2 hours of television programming per night (the 10pm news cuts it short).

Of course, if it does come down to a decision between Human Target and Lie to Me, one should expect Lie to Me to come out on top. Why? Two words: Tim Roth. Also, Lie to Me is cheaper to produce has received more critical acclaim and award nominations.

With the end of May being the likely deadline for series contract renewals, expect a decision around that time, if not before.

  1. There are not too many shows I go out of my way for but Human Target is definately one of them. Please don’t cancel it. I also like Fringe and Lie to Me but if I could only pick one it would be HT.

  2. PLEASE DONT CANCEL LIE TO ME. I really like Human Target as well but Lie to Me is my favorite show, Tim Roth is awesome. I dont understand if the ratings are highER on Lie To Me than Fringe (which I also like) why would you cancel it. Also Lie To Me won 2 Peoples Choice Awards, HELLLLOOOO, THE VIEWERS PICKED IT AND PICKED TIM ROTH SO WHY WOULD YOU CANCEL A SHOW THAT WAS PICKED BY ITS VIEWERS. You have already cancelled my other favorite show The Good Guys, pretty soon Fox will cancel all of my shows and I will have to start watching another network. Boooooo Fox if you cancel Lie to Me.

  3. Hi! I am not a big tv watcher. However, when the Love of My Life introduced me to his tv programming. I pretty much fell in love with what he watches on the Fox Network. My favorite shows are “Lie To Me”, “Human Target” and “House”! We absolutely love these shows and record them religiously. From what I can see from other posts, there are big fans out there rooting for Lie To Me and Human Target. Please, Please, Please consider keeping these programs on the air! Thank you for your time!

    • I agree I do not watch reality Television and love Lie To Me and Human Target. Please do not get rid of them

    • I agree, lie to me and human target are the only shows I watch on fox! Please keep them!

  4. I don’t usually post but upon reading this article i felt like I should. I do hope somehow FOX reads these post because it shows how people are dedicated to their shows. I am a Big Lie To Me fan ever since I saw it while religiously watching House. I also fall under the 18-34 demographic. Tim Roth’s character simply brings something brilliant to this show. His attitude and persona are what makes this show have its love/hate relationship with the main character. The supporting actors indulge him and at the same time try to make him in my terms comforting and the way the characters act with each other is refreshing. The characters show truth from having feelings for each other but realize that pushing it too far may cause problems(this is how real people act not everything is how Hollywood perceives it). The science in this show has made me go and look for books by Dr. Paul Ekman and has sparked my curiosity. I recently introduced a few friends of mine to this show on Netflix and they became instantly hooked asking me to let them borrow the seasons on dvd so as to not have the buffering when everyone is at home using the net. I tried watching it when the show came on but having the show not air and then air again and no knowing what week it was coming back made it difficult for me top see this show and add my views to it. So i went and watched it on the Fox website but it isnt the same as watching it when it is aired on tv. FOX should simply leave it as is if it brings good ratings and is strong then I see no point in cutting it off. If you are making money and not losing then it is doing as Charlie Sheen simply states “Winning”.

P.S. Sorry for my long post.

  5. How can we save Human Target?(yes, it is rather ironic, since each episode is about saving someone)
I love the show, and so do all my friends. Can we at least get it on another network? I’m so tired of promos for crappy reality shows, and unscripted nonsense.
Human Target has really taken off this season, better scripts and characters. It needs to stay on the air!

  6. I’m so tired to going to work and being around stupid people everyday and then come home and having to watch stupid people on these dumb reality shows. It is time that you get rid of them and let us keep watching lie to me fringe and human target. Please don’t get rid of them There are way to many reality shows we don’t need any more of them. And please stop moving our shows around so we can find them to watch please give us our shows back. We had enough with reality shows. I want to get away from reality.

  7. I hate these so called reality shows… When I come home from working a long day at work the LAST thing I want to watch is goofy non-reality reality show… they are all the same at this point you watch the same type of people over and over again… its horrible…. I want to sit back and relax and unwind from my day with my favorite shows “LIE TO ME” and “HOUSE” i love getting lost in the charters and story and wondering whats gonna come out of there mouth next…. its great and its something that I look forward too weekly… PLEASE PLEASE don’t let these shows end!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Two of the better shows on TV, “Lie to Me” and “Human Target” are not scheduled for renewal yet all of the junk that is constantly produced and shown on the major networks lives on. Makes you wonder who decides what is good and what is not and what they use for a measurement. Fox needs to keep both of these shows.

  9. DON’T GET RID OF LIE TO ME!!

  10. Keep Lie To Me!!!! House, Bones and Lie To Me are my shows!!! Keep Lie To Me!!!!! Thanks!!!

  11. I have to say I would be extremely disappointed to find out that Lie to Me was cut. My husband just happened to stumble upon it this year. Since that time we have spent every weekend watching season 1 and 2 episodes on apple tv and cannot wait until next season- PLEASE renew

  12. I think if they don’t bring back “lie to me” it would be stupid. A spin off of “bones”?? Really?? Give me a break, lie to me is one of the best shows on tv, I’d rather watch a show about situations that really happen as opposed to watching a show like “fringe”

  13. I HAVE ACTUALLY READ ALOT OF THESE POST AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT I AGREE..THE PROBLEM IS, ARE THE PEOPLE THAT SIT BEHIND CLOSED DOORS ACTUALLY READING, AND IF THEY ARE THERE IS NO WAY THEY WOULD NOT RENEW THESE SHOWS…I MEAN REALLY A SPIN-OFF OF BONES, WHO REALLY WANTS TO SEE THAT, NOT ME OR THE THREE OTHER PEOPLE I LIVE WITH AND THATS JUST IN ONE HOUSE…I MEAN WHAT HAPPENED TO SHOWS LIKE PRISON BREAK AND 24…WHEN 24 WAS ON YOU KNEW IT STARTED IN JANUARY AND ENDED SOMETIME IN JUNE EVERY SEASON WITHOUT FAIL AND THATS WHEN FOX WAS GREAT…AND NOW YOU HAVE ALL THESE SHOWS THAT COME ON FOR TWO MONTHS THEN TAKE A MONTH BREAK, THEN COME BACK ON AND BEFORE YOU REALIZE IT THE SEASON IS OVER, ITS TOO HARD TO KEEP UP WITH THEM..IF ANYBODY OUT THERE IS READING THIS AND IN A POSITION TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, I CAN ASSURE YOU, AND IM SURE I SPEAK FOR A VAST MAJORITY OF YOUR VIEWERS THAT IF YOU DONT RENEW FRINGE, LIE TO ME, AND HUMAN TARGET AND I SERIOUSLY MEAN ALL THREE BUT THEN YOU DECIDE TO COME OUT WITH SOME GARBAGE LIKE “THE LOCATOR” YOU WILL LOSE MOST OF YOUR FANBASE…AND MIND YOU IM SPEAKING FOR 4 PEOPLE RIGHT HERE WHO KNOW MANY MORE…TRUST ME IF YOU TAKE THESE SHOWS OFF THE AIR WHAT REASON WILL ANYBODY HAVE TO WATCH FOX…MOST CERTAINLY NOT FOR THE NEWS…SO I HOPE YOU CEO’S ARE LISTENING…SHOULD I EVEN HAVE TO MENTION HOUSE…YOU TALK ABOUT HART HANSON’S DEDICATED FANS WELL I DONT EVEN KNOW WHO THAT GUY IS CAN YOU NAME SOMETHING ELSE HE HAS BEEN IN??

  14. Please do not cancel Lie To Me…. please…

  15. Human Target has something unique. People who watch it w/me have sprndable income and buy the advertizers’ products. We also have an IQ. Don’t treat us like chopped liver.

  16. Ditto to all the positive statements about HT & Lie to Me. I repeat, “Don’t treat me like chopped liver.” I have lived thru WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Granada, Iraq, and many other political insanities – lost people ineveryone of them. My opinion doesn’t count? I’ll match wit and experience with the characters that make that mal assumption. Bobi

  17. Lie to Me is one of the most truly intellectual yet entertaining shows out there. It would be a real shame to lose one of the few shows that doesn’t kill brain cells and actually speaks to the more intelligent side of the American public. I hope the folks at Fox actually read comments like these before they make decisions that will further alienate some true fans.

  18. Lie to me is one of the best shows I have seen. Please renew this show.

  19. I don’t know if the powers that be look at this site, but Lie to Me is one of my favorite shows. Love it, love it…please keep it!

  20. I love Human Target and will be bummed that is doesn’t come back. I think in the midst of stupid reality shows this show in awesome. I really feel Mark Valley does a great job as Christopher Chase.

  21. I have just these last few months started to watch lie to me and fell in love with the story and the characters that it contained. I watched the last episode on season three and when ending a show like this you do not end it on a cliffhanger if you are going to cancel a show. it infuriates people, me included. You have this wonderful series that is funny, entertaining, varied, and intellectual, not to mention that it is ,as mentioned in the article, a solid show, why cancel it? Canceling it is pulling money out of Fox’s pockets and what person in their right mind wants to lose money? For all those who love this show you would think that it would be held in a more favorable light.

  22. PLEASE AIR LIE TO ME! It is the best show and it has many outcomes to arise.

  23. I’m confused. Does Fox not read comments online? Especially on Hulu.. I love Bones, House, and definitely Lie To Me. LIe To Me may not be a veteran on the network, but it’s been around long enough to withstand this sort of judgment. I think I can represent most people when I say that sneaking that pilot of “The Finder” into that Bones episode was such a let down. That show is basically a combination of Lie To Me, Burn Notice, and Bones, except it lacks charisma. Why Lie To Me could get the boot because of a stupid spin off such as The Finder completely confuses me. Sometimes spin offs are successful – I don’t see this one being that way. It was just a waste of time, I wanted to be watching BONES, not the Finder. Please do not cancel Lie To Me- Tim Roth is a freaking genius, and he definitely deserves more credit than this! Honor your fans, Fox!

    • I love bones and lie toe also

    • I love bones and lie to me also. How about caring what people over 40 want to watch. Not another talent show

  24. Save LTM please!! it’s really awesome!! better than the others actually…

  25. The problem with American series is that they are too long and lock everything out. The best way to make space and keep people happy is to reduce the space for every series, give more programs a chance. Do 10-12 week runs rather than 22-24. That way we can enjoy Bones and Lie to Me!

  26. And down goes, ALL THREE that were said they’d be renewing and more. A POX on FOX. http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/05/10/fox-cancels-human-target/

  27. can you keep Human Target as a summer replacement? I really like this show and I am sure I am not the only one..please consider. Thank You

  28. Although I won’t be sorry really to see Lie To Me go but HUMAN TARGET?
This is a good show with that sense of mystery and no sex (or very little). It really is a shame to see it go – I was really getting into it.

  29. unbelievable fox is cancelling lie to me. one of the truly entertaining scripted (endangered species) shows on television. i’ve been looking for a reason to stop watching anything on fox (due to their horrible faux news), so i guess here is my chance. fox, you su*k!
