Fox Cancels ‘Alcatraz,’ ‘The Finder,’ ‘Breaking In’ & ‘Teenage Daughter’

alcatraz canceled Fox Cancels Alcatraz, The Finder, Breaking In & Teenage Daughter

In order to make room for their upcoming new Fall line-up, Fox is clearing out its underperforming series. Alcatraz, The Finder, Breaking In (again), and I Hate My Teenage Daughter have all been officially canceled, and will not be returning to the network this fall.

Of course, most of these cancelations aren’t likely to take anyone by surprise. Despite each series having its own strengths and weaknesses, the overall ratings for most of these shows are well beneath acceptable levels for network television.

Perhaps the most prominent series being canceled by Fox this year is the J.J. Abrams-produced Alcatraz. Presented as a compelling tale of fantastical events which led 300 people from the island prison in 1963 to the present, its actual execution turned out to be nothing more than a string of episodic tales revolving around criminals who,it turns out, aren’t all that bad.

As for Breaking In and I Hate My Teenage Daughter, the news is a little less shocking, as both were previously pulled from the schedule shortly after they first aired. For I Hate My Teenage Daughter, its almost instantaneous decline was all but expected.  As far as new series went for the 2011 Fall television series, I Hate My Teenage Daughter was generally considered the worst.

With a mixture of poorly conceived characters,  premises and an awkward presentation of mothers being “hilariously” berated by their children, not only did the series not feel like it belonged on television, but its placement within Fox’s typically strong television schedule had many worrying that the network’s programming decisions had taken a turn for the worse.

Of course, if anything is going to hit a fan base in the gut, it will be Fox’s second cancelation of Breaking In. After premiering in 2011, Breaking In had a strong following for a freshman series. Unfortunately, the low ratings led Fox to cancel the series – but not to let it go completely.

Making use of their contractual option for the series, Fox essentially put the cast on hold until it could figure out what to do with this new show. After finally agreeing to bring the series back for a second season, all eyes were on the “little show that could” – to see if a second chance paid off.

Unfortunately, it didn’t. Generally just as entertaining as its first season, Breaking In always felt like a TV series that was on the wrong network. With geek-centric jokes and pop culture innuendos, Breaking In always worked best when it played to a specific group of people. Of course, when that specific group of people largely doesn’t watch television live, there’s nothing much left for a network to do but to cancel a series.

And not to be left out, Fox’s The Finder was a brief experiment in what can happen when a lead actress on your other hit series is going to have a baby. Serving as a second series for the man behind Bones, it’s hard to believe that Fox would have picked The Finder up if they weren’t faced with having to split up Bones season 7.

With enjoyable moments here and there, The Finder largely felt like it was better suited to a different network. While some may argue that perhaps The Finder didn’t belong on any network, one could argue that trying to fit the only overtly comedic-drama into a network schedule isn’t easy – something that Fox’s previously canceled series The Good Guys can attest to.

When it comes down to it, seeing a television show canceled is never fun – even if you’re not a fan of the series. Nobody ever intends on making an unsuccessful series, so when it happens it’s more unfortunate than anything. That being said, Fox viewers walked away relatively unscathed in this year’s axing. Sure, House is finally coming to an end, but Fringe isn’t. So when it comes to adding up your personal television scorecard, you should still be coming out ahead when it comes to Fox.

  1. I cant believe they are canceling such high quality shows! I dont see why people dont like the finder… it was literally such a good show. It had alot of potential and a great story line, that could be expanded. The last episode, “A Boy with a Bucket” it left me with so many questions! If fox really cancels the show i will be really depressed.

  2. Please Help to put this awesome show Back on the Air, Please Save The Great and truly unique series ‘The Finder’, please sign these Petitions, pretty please ♥ thx everyone ♥ http://www.thepetitionsite.com/406/663/146/save-the-finder-on-fox/ or http://www.savethefinder.org

    • Please do not cancel the finder! Please I love it so so so much please don’t!

  3. Fox needs to rethink how they do things. They obviously have no idea what good Television really is since they are putting two “reality” shows about “picking a date” on the air. Of course, more ways to make men and women feel like crap. The Finder is a great show and had a LOT of potential for growth. Seriously, Fox is turning worse and worse. Sunday is the only day worth watching.

  4. I just found out that the “The Finder”was cancelled! I can’t believe it, they need to put it back on the air. Maybe a different tiime slot but they need to bring it back. I also liked Alcatraz! I had both shows DVR so I wouldn’t miss it. I hope they reconsider their decision, a disappointed FOX viewer.

    • I just found out too, every show I like gets canceled. The only Fox shows I even watched anymore were Bones & the Finder. The story line on Bones is turning to phase in cancellation, guess there is another ‘reality’ show waiting in the wings.

I refuse to watch ‘reality’ shows & I guess they don’t really need the revenue, most of the station breaks are promos for other shows. I am very close to canceling my satellite, all of the shows are basically the same formula. They get a good one then bury it & don’t give it a chance, then cancel it.

Why not give viewers some descent programing instead of the slop you shovel out.

  5. How can they cancel the finder!!! The cast meshed and worked so well together. Better than most of the shows on fox besides “Fringe”. Me and my wife are very upset to find a show that we looked forward to watching every week will no longer be on the air. Fox should not cancel a series that is worth watching besides all the reality show crap that is on most other major networks. If this show is being canceled for some stupid reality show than this just show the dumbing of the viewing public.

  6. Bring back The Finder!!! That show was awesome! I loved it so much, and I am so pissed that FOX canceled it. Bring it back!!! Maybe FOX should have promoted The Finder as much as the promoted Touch. The Finder was a great different show with and amazing fun cast. Plus that ended left me with so many questions. It cannot just end like that!

  7. WHAT?!?!? I absolutely LOVED The Finder!!! I was so excited for season two and then today my heart is broken because I won’t get to see Walter anymore!!! I loved The Finder and it was different from the other shows I watch which is a part of why I love it! It left me thinking and reflecting after an episode was over…….. And leaving us hanging like that is totally NOT ok. It can’t end this way.

  8. I can’t believe they cancelled the Finder. I loved that show. It was funny, and a truly great concept. Great acting by all! They should have left it on in the Friday slot around 8:00pm as there is truly nothing on. I looked forward to that show every week. Such a wonderful cast. I’m so bummed that they will leave us in the dark….leave us hanging. So not okay!

    • Well, I have to take back what I said about there being nothing on in the 8pm hour on Friday. Touch and Fringe are on and they are both truly great shows, but they could have found the perfect time slot for The Finder….I believe.

  9. That totally sucks!!! The finder was one of my favorite shows!!!!! It was totally rad!! Argh!!!!!!

  10. I really enjoyed The Finder but it doesn’t surprise me that they dropped it. It was different enough from the usual drivel they put out that they probaly couldn’t wrap their heads around it, execs and common veiwers alike.

That’s ok, the networks are making it super easy to quit watching TV. This fall I’m down to watching 2 shows I really enjoy and maybe 3-4 that I watch if I’m not doing something else which I usually am. NCIS and Fringe, I’ll watch but what about next fall when we have no more Fringe, being that it’s on it’s final season??

  11. That’s such BS!! I could care less about all but two of these shows, and they would be Breaking In and The Finder.
I can understand Breaking In at least, cause even I didn’t find this little gem till the end of it’s ‘life’. The two episodes I caught though (albeit reruns) definitely left me hunting for more.
The Finder though was an excellent show I religious watched & DVRd every week! To call it merely a fill-in for Emily’s (Deschanel) pregnancy is absurd and degrading to the cast and crew.

I even checked several sites to ensure this gem was being picked up for fall (along with Unforgettable) and everything said yes… Now I find this, when looking for the start date. Wth?

I think we really got jipped (to be polite) on this one! Fox could easily carry this show! Heck, they could carry Breaking In, too! A loyal fan base is better than 12 million airheads that don’t understand intellectual humor anyway.

P.S. They keep track of instant, 24 hour, week, and month watchers anyhow, so why is it such a big deal that something gets watched live? Most of us just want to bypass the crap commercials.

  14. are you freakin serous FOX….!!! this is why I’ve lost all faith in watching T.V. when i finally find a show to watch you freakin CANCEL IT. Alcatraz and The Finder were some of the only things that could get me to turn the television on. GEEZ now i only have Bones and Alphas left. thank god Alphas is on the Sifi channel. i wish Alcatraz was on Sifi also.

  15. hey you guys you know that Michael Clarke Duncan passed away. i dont know about you but i dont think i could watch The Finder without Leo. he was’t my favorite actor in the world but i still enjoyed the movies and shows he played in. i really can’t see someone even coming close to his performance and the “Legal Adviser” and i clearly dont want to see someone else take his place.

    • I was going to comment about his passing too. I was one of the people who really wished FOX didn’t cancel the Finder, but after hearing about Michael Clarke Duncan’s passing, I’m glad the show was cancelled and didn’t have to try to replace his presence…which was a big part of that show. RIP Michael Clarke Duncan

  16. So disturbing that good quality programming is being replaced with more and more reality shows. Really sad to see The Finder is cancelled. Fox just doesn’t get it! Now the only thing I will continue to watch on Fox is the news!

  17. I love the finder… i was really getting in to it and know i’m just mad.. I hate when they end a show with so much potential and with Michael Clarke Duncan Gone I guess it is really over.

  18. I just found out that Michael Clarke Duncan died on September 3. I was very upset when they cancelled Finder but now that Michael is gone… well for me he was the show. The friendship between Leo and Walter was unique. Michael Rest In PEACE.

  19. My husband and I really enjoyed The Finder. It was the only show on television worth watching. We will miss it and Michael. It is true, whenever we find a show we like they cancel it. Nothing on television is worth our time anymore.

  20. THe FInder and Alcatraz I liked a lot, and yet because of the dreaded low viewership deamon they get the axe. BULL CHIPS I say!!!! OMG not 100 million people watching to see the 400 comercials that air during the show. Do these doofuses not get that generaly we all go the the bathroom during the commercials and do not watch them anyway??

NO the reality is that they must make way to cram even more unrealistic so called reality shows down our throats. Personaly I am so sick and tired of pre-scripted, pre-determiones out come garbbage thrown on the screen that I could hurl.

  21. You guys stink, finder & Alcatraz were worth keeping… Good luck, you’ll need it… Sucks

  22. Some of us liked tv… Alcatraz, hello we should know what happens to rest of show, as well as finder, they werea fun take on tv… Escape from reality tv… Which suck by the way… Wake up quit taking away what we like.. Geez

  23. You guys should really back track & understand we like tv shows.. Like finder & Alcatraz & human target as well.. Wake up to good show, Jesus it’s tv , your suppose to show for your public & from what I See .. We all like… You know tv shows..,..

  24. The Finder in ways brought me back to my childhood days, allowing my sense of humor, and imagination to open back up like it was as a child. The show reminded me of a P.I. show verses Monk and was full of imagination. Please bring it back!

  25. Disappointed The Finder series ended last night – so much so, the first search I did on computer was to find out when next series is. Cannot believe the most enjoyable I have seen this year (excl. Psych) has been axed.

  26. Why would you cancel Finder. It was a unique show that had more to offer than just dead bodies. It have loyalty, imagination, and mystery. Along with a great cast, who had me hooked and waiting to tune in week to week. I will greatly miss it. I think who ever you have testing these shows need to be retired and new ones hired. There have been so many shows that were not renewed that I was really into. Alcatraz, Unnessasary roughness, and many more. Sometimes a little more family or unique ideas are good. Give them a try. And again, retire these old people who are saying all we like out there are CSI and cop shows. Variety of shows would be nice.

  27. Bring back the finder and Alcatraz please!!!!!

  28. My 25 year old daughter recently asked me when Alcatraz was coming back on. Yes, that was a great question. So, here I find it has been cancelled. I shake my head in wonder; what in the heck was/is Fox exec’s thinking? Even my 93 year old father liked the show. 3 generations looking forward to a show – what more can you ask for??
So sad, especially when you notice all the completely idiotic “reality” shows on & renewed – Honey Boo Boo, Jerseylicious, Kardashian nonsense, Gypsey wedding bizarreness, etc, etc.
I think I shall join many of my friends and just cancel the cable TV – it’s just not worth it anymore.

  29. The Finder is a great show and we did not find it until it was released on Netflix….I think Fox is crazy not to keep this series going. Perhaps another Network will pick it up….like the one that aires, shows like Burn Notice, White Collar, Psych….perhaps Eureka, we have found all of these series on Netflix, since we do not have cable or satelite TV, so to dismiss a series because everyone is not viewing it on TV is premature. A very good show we love it….and it is sad about beloved actor Michael Duncan, he brought such warmth and fun to the show. I hope it comes back…..truly we need more good show like The Finder.
