alcatraz canceled Fox Cancels Alcatraz, The Finder, Breaking In & Teenage Daughter

In order to make room for their upcoming new Fall line-up, Fox is clearing out its underperforming series. Alcatraz, The Finder, Breaking In (again), and I Hate My Teenage Daughter have all been officially canceled, and will not be returning to the network this fall.

Of course, most of these cancelations aren’t likely to take anyone by surprise. Despite each series having its own strengths and weaknesses, the overall ratings for most of these shows are well beneath acceptable levels for network television.

Perhaps the most prominent series being canceled by Fox this year is the J.J. Abrams-produced Alcatraz. Presented as a compelling tale of fantastical events which led 300 people from the island prison in 1963 to the present, its actual execution turned out to be nothing more than a string of episodic tales revolving around criminals who,it turns out, aren’t all that bad.

As for Breaking In and I Hate My Teenage Daughter, the news is a little less shocking, as both were previously pulled from the schedule shortly after they first aired. For I Hate My Teenage Daughter, its almost instantaneous decline was all but expected.  As far as new series went for the 2011 Fall television series, I Hate My Teenage Daughter was generally considered the worst.

With a mixture of poorly conceived characters,  premises and an awkward presentation of mothers being “hilariously” berated by their children, not only did the series not feel like it belonged on television, but its placement within Fox’s typically strong television schedule had many worrying that the network’s programming decisions had taken a turn for the worse.

Of course, if anything is going to hit a fan base in the gut, it will be Fox’s second cancelation of Breaking In. After premiering in 2011, Breaking In had a strong following for a freshman series. Unfortunately, the low ratings led Fox to cancel the series – but not to let it go completely.

Making use of their contractual option for the series, Fox essentially put the cast on hold until it could figure out what to do with this new show. After finally agreeing to bring the series back for a second season, all eyes were on the “little show that could” – to see if a second chance paid off.

Unfortunately, it didn’t. Generally just as entertaining as its first season, Breaking In always felt like a TV series that was on the wrong network. With geek-centric jokes and pop culture innuendos, Breaking In always worked best when it played to a specific group of people. Of course, when that specific group of people largely doesn’t watch television live, there’s nothing much left for a network to do but to cancel a series.

i hate my teenage daughter fox Fox Cancels Alcatraz, The Finder, Breaking In & Teenage DaughterFox hates their teenage daughters too

And not to be left out, Fox’s The Finder was a brief experiment in what can happen when a lead actress on your other hit series is going to have a baby. Serving as a second series for the man behind Bones, it’s hard to believe that Fox would have picked The Finder up if they weren’t faced with having to split up Bones season 7.

With enjoyable moments here and there, The Finder largely felt like it was better suited to a different network. While some may argue that perhaps The Finder didn’t belong on any network, one could argue that trying to fit the only overtly comedic-drama into a network schedule isn’t easy – something that Fox’s previously canceled series The Good Guys can attest to.

When it comes down to it, seeing a television show canceled is never fun – even if you’re not a fan of the series. Nobody ever intends on making an unsuccessful series, so when it happens it’s more unfortunate than anything. That being said, Fox viewers walked away relatively unscathed in this year’s axing. Sure, House is finally coming to an end, but Fringe isn’t. So when it comes to adding up your personal television scorecard, you should still be coming out ahead when it comes to Fox.

  1. Sigh first terra nova now alcatraz all the intersting shows are being cancelled

    • I hate when I really get into a show and then it’s cancelled. Keep Alctraz on TV FOX…your killing off a good show. Give it a better night on TV….Mary

    • Alcatraz had potential with Sam Neil and the supporting actors, but I feel the miscasting of the female lead, who just appeared way to young and short, and her 300+ pound partner, ultimately killed the show. Interesting storyline, but I think they just had to make it more plausible and real. These two chasing down our worst criminal from the past just didn’t sit well.

  2. Sad about Breaking In, but it didn’t feel the same with Megan Mullaly being added, sort of ruined the chemistry of the show and I typically like her. I give Fox credit for giving it a second chance though.

  3. So sad that another thinking person show has been removed from the airwaves, Flash Forward anyone. Really getting tired of it

    • and here i thought i was the only person who liked flash forward.

    • It is like the networks are really trying their best to make “television for idiots”…just saying…Keep Alctraz alive!

  4. Did anyone else notice that Fox totally pulled a Friefly with The Finder, airing almost all the episodes out of their correct order? It’s not as noticeable at first, just some weird things here and their where it was like “hmm, that doesn’t really fit with what happened in the last episode…” , but it became clearly obvious when 2 established characters ‘met for the first time’ on the 9th or 10th episode aired, even though they had been interacting with eachother and had scenes together since around the 3rd episode. If you check the production codes of the aired episodes they are all out of order, instead of one or two being out of order here and there as is normal with most shows.

    • The Finder was a great show. Besides Bones I do not watch Fox. For the idiots to pull both Finder and Fox to show two nights of American Idol doomed the show. It never had a chance. My question to fox was why did they not put American Idol on Fridays and Saturdays. They have been on for a long time could they not stand on their own? Without bumping both Bones and Finder? Truly sad how stupid the programming schedulers truly are. What idiot renewed Touch? Touch was only renewed because of Sutherlands popularity due to 24. The show sucks!!!

      • There nare not many shows on TV these days that catch my attention as does the Finder. I do not care for reality shows and the Finder can be funny and a little sad at times but quite enjoyable. If you need to eliminate something, take off those ridicuous reality shows. Who cares who sleeps with who or how a family gets along anyway. We all have our family issues and sometimes it feels good to get away from all that with cute little shows like the Finder. I for one would love to see it continue on.

  5. SOB… I was hoping Alcatraz would get another season… if nothing more than to fulfill the time I put in to watching it by finding out what the hell was happening… Terra Nova really found it’s legs late as did The River. I really wish these shows would be given a second season. I need closer. F&ck.

  6. I see a horrible future for television filled with vampires, terriible sing and dance competition, cougar sex crazed mom and any other over used repeated drawn out overly predictable garbage people like Kevin Reilly and other network executives deem worthy television. Viewerships on a high volume level are qualifications of a bigon era. Yes numbers mean $ but you need to take into account multiple factors. One being people that enjoy watching serial thrillers like Alcatraz or Lost don’t watch tv alone. They want to share that experience. Second the invention of dvr and on demand numbers need to be taken seriously, not just a after thought. If you keep cancelling shows that aren’t in the niche categorical money makers, you are not going to get new viewers to your network. The only time I watched Fox was for Football and then terra nova and Alcatraz came out. I invested my time to get into these shows for what? Two cliff hanger endings that I will never know about? I’m questioning whether or not to even watch fox again after these experiences.

    • i like how you think ! I am so tired of the crap!!!! FOX leaves on or adds on. Alcatraz. And The Finder. Were a nice break in my week. This is the second season in a row they ditch decent shows. I am Rey dissappointed. I think it time I ditch them !!!!!

    • I like the way you think. I am so tired of FOX. Disappointing me again ! I enjoyed Alcatraz and The Finder It was a nice break In my week . Leaving cliff hangers to good programs we can only guess about. Pretty bad. Two seasons in a row they CX decent shows and add more reality (lol). And talent programming Enough is enough I live reality I agree. I think it’s time to Cx FOX

  8. Sorry to see Alcatraz go. I think the Mid-Season replacement status hurt what they wanted to do. they seemed to play along the lines of,”Wait till season 2.” That made every episode seem the same. They did little back story expect for the cliffhanger of course. Would be nice if it could move to FX but that’s a long-shot.

  9. I’m surprized Alcatraz made one season. I couldn’t make it past three shows. It had great trailers making it seem like a cool Sci-Fi series, but whoever put it together really dropped the ball after the pilot. Once you got the original idea, then it just became a lame not so great good guy sluths chasing bad guys, and some of the original people involved with the project were more nasty than the bad guys….All too predictable..

  10. The Finder was a great fun show. Very, VERY few shows these days are wholesome. Finder had enjoyable characters and I never had to worry about flipping the channel when there was too much gore, sex, or over the top drama. It always made me laugh, too.
Well, back to my old Pretender series for some good clean shows.

  11. Too bad, I really enjoyed The Finder. I thought it was an interesting show. My wife and I also really enjoyed The Good Guys, before that was cancelled. Come on Fox. Stop cutting the good shows.

  12. I am disgusted that The Finder is cancelled! Such a good, clean, fun show…so hard to find these days. Anyone know how to get a message to someone at Fox? Anyone that could at least hear a few complaints…

    • Try this email: askfox@foxinc.com found it on that site for parents to complain at TV chanels. Hope it works, i hope everyone tries to write an email directly to them, hopefully bring back the good shows. Thanks.

  13. I loved The Finder. Interesting scripts. Good themes. Why do the best shows always get canceled?

  15. The Finder is a great show. If Fox would spend some money and advertise more than maybe the great shows would get noticed and not cancelled. Another great show ending for some stupid reason.

  16. Well, yay, Fox. LOVED The Finder, and now you’ve cancelled it.
    Here’s a clue:
Quit making those horrible “talent” shows, shows full of brain-dead bimbos, screaming families, any cooking whatsover (we’ve got that already on 40 cable channels, you idiots) and offensive animation (not the Simpsons; the other shows after it).

Commit to having a FULL season of something that isn’t complete and utter crap. But Fox is so gutless — all they can do is recycle crap. What else would you expect from a network that has made so many bad programming choices?

  17. I watch very few shows on Fox. I watch House and am sorry it is going. I loved Terra Nova and thought it was the best new show of the year and got cancelled way too fast.I am very disappointed they did not renew The Finder as well.It was a great show.

  18. I don’t sit down to watch a lot of TV, but when I do, it would be nice to NOT have boobs jiggling, women and men screaming at each other or some sort of race going on. Reality shows are boring and common place in the programming line-ups. Please get a clue.

The Finder was a highly entertaining program; well written, good solid acting and *gasp* plot-lines!

You screwed the pooch on this one, Fox. I’m done with you for a while.

  19. So are we going to at least get a bit of closure with Alcatraz? Would be nice to know exactly who and why the entire population was time displaced. Truth be told though, if they don’t I could care less which should tell you something about the show and why it was canceled.

  20. My husband and I are really upset that FOX cancled “The Finder”. I don’t think we will be watching anything on Fox anymore. It’s not like they have given us much of a choice after getting rid of “The Finder” and leaving all the other crap shows on the Air.

  21. Good morning
You should not have canceled the Finder!!
You shoujld have followed the original from Bones.
Kept Ike the Cockney Pilot ? Bartender and then brought on the Maddie charActer not as a replacement but as a accent to the show.
You have the Base for a good show as you did with Terra Nova but you do not have any vision as to letting a show find a time slot and develop a Fan base.
Your network and many others put on pure Garbage in the form of reality shows
American Idol, The biggest Loser, The bacholar shows.
The viewers wnat to be entertained not shown another boat load of fertilizer because of short sighted Execs.

    Bring back entertainment (PLEASE)

  22. House, the finder and I hate my teenage daughter are all shows I enjoyed. Don’t get me wrong, I hate my teenage daughter wasn’t a great show but it gave me a few good chuckles, as anything that can do that I’m all for.
But canceling House and the finder??
Horrible horrible move on Fox’s part…really horrible. I “predict” the number of viewers will drop dramatically
I absolutely LOVE the finder, it was good humor, no swearing, no bs drama and even the naughty bits of humor were very tame in comparison to these other garbage shows on tv.

    Fox, please keep The Finder!!!!!

  23. sigh
“The Finder” was great. Aside from “Bones” (which has lost a lot of it’s polish this last season), “The Finder” is about the only Fox show we tune in to. “House” used to be good, but one can only take so many last-minute revelations at the end of each episode. In all honesty, our family really hasn’t religiously watched a Fox series since “The X Files” went off the air. We just can’t seem to count on them to keep anything on the air longer than a season. Anyone remember “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr”, “Arrested Development”, “Firefly” and “Strange Luck”?

    • I recently finished watching Brisco on DVD and thought it was a brilliant, quirky little series. It mixed well with The X Files.

  24. Overall this sucks. Im always looking forward to watching the Finder after a long and boring week and now ill have nothing to look forward to but the old and worn out shows that arent even interesting anymore…

  25. Consider the sum total of what I watch on Fox is Bones, They better pull some good crap out of their hat for the coming season. I actually liked the Finder but liked the books of the Locator series better. I did watch House but House jumped the shark long about the about the end of season 5 and I started only watching about 3 episodes a season then in 6 that just died. Stopped completely. That sums it up.

My whole Fox schedule now consists of: Monday: Tape Bones [sorry Eureka is on for the last season] then watch taped Bones at nine then off to either Castle or Hawaii 5-0 and then watch the one I didn’t watch at 10 at 11. End of Fox for the week.

CBS seems to be my heavy hitter but it is less Bubblegum than Fox anyway.

  26. Can’t believe that FOX is canceling yet another smart TV show in Alcatraz. They leave crap on like Idol. Just shows there aren’t enough people out there that like smart TV.

  27. Shows like Alcatraz might suffer from being “to smart for the room”, so to speak. The odd premise of these shows do not have a mass appeal because they tend to require viewers to watch almost every show and be able to follow along with the storyline. And as this cancellation and history has shown us even people who enjoy these shows tend to be hesitant because after investing time in these shows they tend to get cancelled, and the people who have watched it never find out what they were following along with in the first place.

  28. Alcatraz was awesome; I was excited that Breaking In was coming back and now they’re both canceled. This is just sad. And disappointing.

  29. It seems that the really good shows always get canceled. I don’t know how I guys pick which shows stay but you need to come up with a better method. This is a hugh mistake FINDER needs to stay.
