house lie to me bones Fox Announces Fall TV Lineup & Squirms On Sarah Connor

Yesterday (Monday, the 19th) Fox announced it’s upcoming Fall lineup today and we will be seeing some of Screen Rant’s favorites like House, Lie To Me, Bones, Fringe & Dollhouse return this fall.  These are the shows we here at Screen Rant are more focused on.

The news in and about the industry this last weekend was swirling in a dance on what was being renewed and canceled.  Specifically, some were focused on the fates of Dollhouse and The Sarah Connor Chronicles and why one show was given the axe, and the other given a reprieve.

For the upcoming Fall season House and Lie To Me will be on Mondays.  Bones leads into Fringe on Thursday nights.  Dollhouse stays on Friday with two 30-minute comedies as lead-ins.

At the mid-season point in the schedule, 24 will show up on Mondays following House.

Human Target starts in January on Wednesdays.

PS:  I’ve picked up some noise that 24 will take place in New York City next season.

Fringe Moving To Thursday Nights

Olivia?  Are we really moving to Thursdays?

If you don’t look at the other network schedules, I’m thinking that Fox is pitching two popular shows on one night.  Seems good, but if you dwell on the issue at hand, it seems that they might as well put Fringe on Friday nights with Dollhouse.

I say that because as it currently stands Thursday nights are dominated on other networks by The Office, 30 Rock, Grey’s Anatomy and CSI.

If you look at these shows on the other networks, in regards to viewers there is some serious competition on these other networks for Bones and Fringe.  Numbers from last weeks ratings:

  • The Office had 7.8 milion viewers;
  • 30 Rock – 6.1 mil;
  • Grey’s Anatomy – 15.5 mil;
  • CSI – 14.9 mil.

Meanwhile, Bones brought in 8.8 mil and Fringe 9.2 million viewers.

What happens when you pitch Fringe and Bones up against Grey’s and CSI?  To me it sounds like a bit of a slaughter and possibly an excuse to cancel one or the other.  Fox may be trying to compete for Thursday nights, but I’m not sure this is their best way of doing it.  It almost seems like they’re setting up some shows to be the fall guy.

The guys at Fox seem to think that CSI had a decline in ratings and, I presume, they are thinking it is vulnerable to a new competing show.  Of course, last week Grey’s Anatomy was 6th and CSI was 7th in the top 10 of all shows, and 3rd and 4th respectively amongst scripted dramas.

Who is this “decline” statement aimed at?  Mutants from a planet with no TV?  Despite this “toe the company line” stance, Reilly still managed, with a straight face, to toss out statements like “Thursday night, … the door’s more open on this night than it’s been in a long, long time.”

Regardless, this placement to Thursdays for Fringe concerns this writer.  The only potential saving grace is that we don’t know for sure if the regular line up from Thursdays will still exist on the other networks this fall. We only have to wait a day or two to find out.

On The Dollhouse Renewal

I have to kick butt next season.  You with me?

Despite fan-polls on the internet showing a massive popularity draw to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fox renewed Dollhouse.

We were reporting on Friday that the show sounded like it was being renewed, but also warned our readers to not hold your breath until it’s announced Monday… which was yesterday.

But folks had questions and those questions were lobbed at Fox’s president of entertainment, Kevin Reilly.

Reilly said that with Dollhouse, they are betting on the creativity of Joss Whedon.  One of the other factors that helped them make their decision are the DVR numbers.  They see the DVR numbers as an indication of the show’s “hidden” popularity and anticipate the show will grow in ratings next year.

Besides, if they terminated Dollhouse, Reilly felt he would have received another 110 million emails.

Yet echoing in the background of this pandering to the fans, Fox’s entertainment chairman Peter Rice was saying that they can grow the show on Fridays – but Fox will not tolerate low numbers on Friday nights.  So it will still have to not only perform, but draw in more viewers.

They feel confident that can happen.  My favorite quote from Rice about the growth was that “The show became much stronger creatively during the course of the season.” Crickets.  In fact, as I reported on Friday, “the Fox execs really liked the show.  Particularly the 2nd half.”  This writer is thinking that once the studio stopped meddling with the delivery of the content, yes, it did get better.

Why Shelve The Sarah Connor Chronicles?

We’ll be bauck!  Well, it sounded good anyway.

Despite their faith in Dollhouse, Fox has looked at The Sarah Connor Chronicles differently.

Reilly flat out said that TSCC has completed its run.  They saw it tailing off and it wasn’t a cheap show to produce.

Reilly said they looked at the ratings track for its Monday run, and then its ratings on Friday night and the trend line was not pointing in the right direction.  And then he said they gave the show support and “some consistent scheduling” but it was time to move on.

And what, replace it with two comedies?  I don’t understand how someone can say that after they’ve moved the show to Friday nights and then quote ratings as the reason to dump a show.  Never mind the fact that TSCC was slaughtering everyone in various “save-the-show” polls.

In Closing

So as it stands, we’re going to be getting Dollhouse on a shoestring budget, but I’m not worried about that.  Whedon as proven he can crank out quality an a spool of thread.  But he has an uphill battle with two comedies as lead-ins to the show doesn’t seem to be a great combination that will work as far as developing viewers across the different shows.  They’re different demographics.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles from the look of things, was going to be doomed…  Regardless of the fan support.

Moving Fringe to Thursdays on a night dominated by the other networks, just seems to fill out the pattern I think I’m seeing from how Fox is handling our favorite shows.

Am I losing it?  Is there a pattern of noise and subterfuge in the works, or is there some genuine plan to make our favorite shows winners?  It’s still a long way to the Fall and as we’ve learned from last season, things can still get mixed up and shuffled around.  We can only hope.  Right?

Here’s the list of shows Fox has lined up for us:

‘Til Death
America’s Most Wanted
American Dad
American Idol
Family Guy
Human Target (January)
Lie to Me
Past Life
So You Think You Can Dance
Sons of Tuscon
The Cleveland Show
The Simpsons
The Wanda Sykes Show (working title)

  1. :( No V

  2. Reilly is an asshole, not even mentioning Terminator fans and citing Whedon’s fans as part of the reason why the show got picked up.

I’m glad we’ll be getting a regular dose of Whedon for a while longer, but just can’t believe they dumped the only truly brilliant SF show out there and replaced it with stupid sitcoms. They could have just cancelled Dollhouse right off the bat too. It’s not as if they had ever even given that show a real chance with the Friday premiere.

But DH is not the show I’d miss if it was gone. Without Terminator, network television just loses meaning for me.

I hope those sad bastards choke on their precious Nielsen.

  3. Sounds like a scheme to squeeze the life out of their scifi shows. Got to worry about the future of quality tv.
It is happening in the UK too. Properly written dramas are being moved aside for reality tv by commercial companies.

  4. Pretty soon I will be able to cancel my cable subscription because there will be NOTHING on TV worth watching that I can’t order from Netflix. With the cancellation of TSCC, the only non-animated show worth watching on FOX is “24″. I know there are alot of House fans here, but I can’t stand that show. I tried watching it several times and just thought of it as an ER ripoff. I despise network execs.

  5. I’ve said it before , but while I am a huge Wheadon fan Dollhouse simply sucks. The show has been terrible all the way through to the season finale. I don’t know why people even wanted it saved. I’m shocked that Joss even put his name on this thing I mean the casting alone aside from Eliza is nothing like Joss. He usually avoids the cliche super model casting, but it’s all over this show. Only roughly half of those super models can actually act and the story is very bland.

Terminator was much better than Dollhouse, but near the end of the second season the show really started to suck. To be honest I’ve reached the point to where I don’t care either way. If it had got renewed I’d of watched it reluctantly just to continue the story I started.

  6. It wasnt nielsen ratings that saved Dollhouse .
Dollhouse is the most TIVOED and DVRED show Fox has .
The lowest rated show to beTivoed or DVRed? Sarah Connor Chronicles .

  7. Sarah Connor Chronicles was MORE DVR’d than Dollhouse.

TSCC had the highst percentage of DVR increase of any show on TV. MORE than Dollhouse!

  8. Too bad about TTSCC, I enjoyed that show. I more than likely won’t be watching the comedies leading into Dollhouse, but I’ll still watch Dollhouse or dvr it at least. Why couldn’t they keep Fringe on Tuesdays? I agree with you Bruce, it seems they’re already trying to kill that show off by moving it to Thursdays. I’ll still be watching it though as I guess I’m one of the guys from the planet with no tv lol. I stopped watching C.S.I. right after they found Sarah alive in the desert. I just got bored with it, but there’s obviously millions that still watch it. Grey’s is ok, but I’m quickly losing interest in that as well. But again, millions of others are still watching and I too will be watching that show next season. Fringe to me would be the better of the three shows I mentioned here though in that time slot. I don’t even bother with the Jay Leno network during that time slot. At least Fox hasn’t moved 24 to Fridays or something yet.

  9. Personally I can’t stand CSI or Grey’s anatomy. Grey’s anatomy is a girled up rip off of scrubs and CSI is boring there is little character development and no emotion. It’s all about solve the crime then next week solve the crime. I watched maybe 6 or 7 episodes and learned absolutely nothing about any of the characters.

  10. Fox has a long history of using scheduling as a means of killing off the really creative shows. Watch. If Dollhouse’s ratings start to improve (despite the weird choice of lead-ins), they’ll switch it to Tuesday, claiming that it’s a slot where it is guaranteed to grow.

Then it won’t and they’ll cancel it and claim there was nothing else that could be done.

I’ve never figured out if Fox is run by blithering idiots or brilliant sadists. It’s at least one of those options.

  11. Some really great shows manage to make it on to Fox, but the people running it really are idiots. They change the schedule so much and are shocked that people aren’t watching anymore. Some people don’t even realize that a show has changed days. I’ve seen seasons where a show has been changed 3 times in one season.

  12. Well, that does it! They terminated TSSC, I’m terminating FOX. I will never watch another prime time show on FOX live again ever! I will still probably view the Sunday animated shows, but only Tivo’d or on line. They will not get me to watch another commercial on their network ever again! It’s that simple and that easy! Screw You FOX! I hope your network goes down the tubes.

For the rest of you TSSC lovers who are mad too, take the pledge too and let FOX know it. Pledge to never watch another live FOX prime time show again ever! If you’re hooked on something they haven’t cancelled yet, only watch it recorded, (make sure to skip any commercials) or on line. Send them a letter telling them so. They will be glad to hear they just lost a few million more viewers! Think about it folks, this is a pledge that’s pretty easy to keep. Even if you still like a few other of their shows. These guys need to know they can not continue to treat their viewers like crap and not pay the consequences. And when you write to FOX, tell them about others you know taking the pledge too. While you’re at it, copy the folks at Neilsen too, they should know how flawed their data is too.

  13. No Terminator. I was really looking forward to season three. When Dollhouse bombs with no TSCC lead in they will bring TSCC back.

  14. I wonder if netwrok executives have thought that if good programming were available on nights other than Thursdays, more people might watch them.

I am already committed to “The Office” and “Grey’s Anatomy” for Thursday nights. And to “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and “Dollhouse” on Fridays.

I hate the beginning of the fall season. Why don’t executives try making up their own new “Thursday nights” on ANOTHER NIGHT!!!

People do watch television on other nights besides Thursdays.

  15. Excuse my french people

    Mother Fu**ers

Three weeks ago id have said battlestar was the best tv show ever made.

But terminator : the sarah conner chronicles totally woops it

Sarah conner totally kicks adamas ass
    john conner totally rapes appollo
and cameron? do we even need to go there?
Shes hot, if i was choosing between her and kara, id choose her, regardless of the metal.

    its not fair.
The last episode , they can not end it like that and not give us more, can they?

i signed 6 petitions 3 to save that show.

John could totally have banged cameron in that last episode, he wanted to
he was going to kiss her and she said “we have to go” id have told her to shut up.

    We want terminator chronicles back
Scwer dollhouse, thats why people wernt tuning in, they were scared that dollhouse was on :@

  16. I was heartbroken way back when Millennium and John Doe was cancelled. Oh, AND Arrested Development! NOW Terminator is gone too!? Really, Fox is out to punish us fans who actually like something creative, original, and smart in our programming. I’m about done with Network tv (thank god Fringe is pretty good). But, I’m sure that will be gone soon as well after they bobble it around the schedule a few times.

Well, folks- Is this a conspiracy to continue dumbing down Americans? Or are there simply too many dumbed down Americans (and, yes, I am a proud American) not interested in shows that are not just churned out crapola. I think we’re slowly being fed Solyent Green, if you ask me.

    Boo Fox!

  17. If you think American tv is dumb, try watching tv programs from the South American countries… lol, you will feel so good about American shows after that…
