Season 7 of Fortnite has just launched with an all new Battle Pass and cosmetic rewards to claim. Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 7's theme is all about an alien invasion to the island. Fans can unlock exciting new skins of intergalactic characters, including the shapeshifting alien Kymera, Superman, and Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty. The Fortnite Season 7 Battle Pass will be somewhat different from previous seasons, however. Epic Games has reintroduced the Battle Star system, which allows players to unlock cosmetic rewards in any order they prefer.

Battle Stars, which were last seen in Fortnite Chapter 1, Season 5, allow players more freedom and control over their Battle Pass rewards. Rather than unlocking in a linear pattern after players clear specific Battle Pass levels, the player can unlock any reward from the multiple pages of options, in almost any order. There are a few rewards that have specific unlock requirements, including the Rick crossover skin, but for the most part, players can unlock items in any order they choose. Here's how to use Battle Stars to unlock Battle Pass rewards in Fortnite Season 7.

How to Use Battle Stars to Unlock Rewards in Fortnite Season 7

A typical Battle Pass Reward page in Fortnite Season 7

To unlock Battle Pass rewards in Fortnite Season 7, players will need to earn Battle Stars. Battle Stars are awarded any time a player levels up, either from earning enough XP or using V-Bucks to buy levels and reach the next Tier. Each new level grants players 5 Battle Stars. Battle Stars do not reset between matches and can be saved until players have enough for the rewards they want.

There are several pages of rewards for players to choose from, usually containing cosmetics related to each of Season 7's special Battle Pass skins, new emotes, and V-Bucks. The kind of cosmetic usually dictates the amount of Battle Stars needed. Banners, sprays, and loading screens are often the cheapest options, going for 3 or 4 Battle Stars each. Back Bling, wraps, emotes, gliders, and pickaxes are a little more expensive, costing anywhere from 5 to 7 Battle Stars. Skins tend to cost the most, usually between 8 and 10 Battle Stars.

Some cosmetics on each reward page, particularly the skins and alternate styles, cannot be unlocked until all the other cosmetics on that page have been purchased. As players purchase more rewards with their Battle Stars and continue to level up their Battle Pass, they will unlock new pages of rewards containing bonus cosmetics, including the additional skin styles.

Similar to past Fortnite Battle Passes, certain skin sets will only unlock when players reach certain levels of the Pass. The Rick skin is one example of this, as players need to reach Level 100 before this reward page becomes available to them. Beyond Level 100, there are many more rewards for players to unlock containing bonus items. These can include alternate skin styles, extra weapon wraps, more V-Bucks, and more.

If players don't already own the Fortnite Season 7 Battle Pass, they can still earn Battle Stars and unlock some of the seasonal rewards. While some options are exclusive to the paid version of the Battle Pass, many will still be available on the free version. If a player decides to upgrade to the paid version of the Battle Pass later, they will not lose any progress and will unlock the reward pages they have already reached.
