[UPDATE 5:06PM June 6th, 2020: Epic Games has moved the date of THE DEVICE event to Monday, June 15th and the start of Season 3 to Wednesday, June 17th.]

Pending anymore delays from Epic Games, the Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2 ending event is only a few days away. The doomsday event was originally planned to take place on May 29, with Season 3 launching just a few days later on June 4. However, Epic Games announced a delay to both the event and the launch of Fortnite Season 3, pushing the event back to this Saturday, June 6. The announcements also gave players a solid time for the start of the event and revealed its actual name.

Up until the announcement made on May 28, fans had been referring to the upcoming change as The Doomsday Event, which referenced the doomsday clock that has recently appeared in-game. The clock, in classic doomsday fashion, is a digital timer that counts down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until the event starts. The clock was obviously reset after the delay was announced, but now the event has an official name. Epic Games has called it "The Device" and revealed that it will be a one-time-only Fortnite event with limited seating.

The Device is slated to take place on June 4 at 2PM ET, [UPDATE: Monday, June 15th] and Epic Games has encouraged players to log-in 30 minutes early to secure a spot at the event because, as they stated, "Space is limited!" This is the first-ever in-game Fortnite event where it has been expressed that space will be limited. However, events in the past have overwhelmed the Epic Games servers, causing them to crash or lock players out of the event entirely.

Why Fortnite's Device Event Has Limited Seating

Fortnite x Star Wars

Recently, Fortnite events have taken place over several days allowing players in different time zones and in different regions of the world the chance to enjoy an event. Or, in the case of Fortnite's Travis Scott concert, the same scripted event took place multiple different times for players on different servers. The most recent events have been a lot smoother in terms of server performance, but by reducing the number of players even more it's likely Epic Games is trying to limit the risk of server overload as much as possible.

Player's may recall the Star Wars preview event that took place during Fortnite's Chapter 2 Season 1 which was the last one-time-only event, but it did not have limited seating. In addition to a special sneak preview, the players who attended the event would receive a limited edition Tie-Fighter glider. This caused players to flood to the Fortnite servers all at one time, and as a result some players were not able to attend the event even after playing the game for hours prior. Namely, streamers like Dr. Lupo were not able to attend the event, even though Fortnite's Creative Director, Donald Mustard, infamously gave him a shout-out during the event. As an apology for poor server performance, all players regardless of whether or not they attended the event received the tie-fighter glider.

While there currently aren't any free exclusive items being advertised for attending The Device event, Fortnite's end of season events usually draw a large number of players. Fans are not very happy about supposed player cap, but hopefully the game's servers will at least be able to keep up. The event is slated to take place at 2PM EST on June 6, which is this Saturday, [UPDATE: Monday, June 15th] and if players are really wanting to attend the event, make sure to show up 30 minutes early.
