The CW’s DC Comics universe is set to expand beyond Arrow and The Flash in January to include DC’S Legends of Tomorrow, but before then the two established shows will be airing their midseason finales. Last season on The Flash, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) faced off against Eobard Thawne a.k.a the Reverse-Flash before defeating the villain with the help of his friends. In season 2, Barry has met his match in the evil speedster known as Zoom (voiced by Tony Todd).
However, while Barry is still recovering – mentally, if not physically – from his encounter with Zoom earlier this season, the midseason finale will shift the focus away from the villainous speedster to bring back some rogues that Barry has previously faced on The Flash. In a new trailer for the episode, Barry is forced to deal with The Trickster, Captain Cold, and Weather Wizard in the holiday-themed midseason finale.
The trailer (above) for “Running to Stand Still” focuses on the return of James Jesse a.k.a. The Trickster (Mark Hamill), Leonard Snart a.k.a. Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), and Mark Mardon a.k.a. Weather Wizard (Liam McIntyre). The trio of rogues will be terrorizing Central City with the goal of finally killing The Flash. As evidenced by the trailer and in keeping with the holiday spirit, The Trickster will be dressing up as an evil, deranged Santa to target Barry.
Although Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) has been confirmed to appear in the episode, he is noticeably absent from the trailer. Still, with three rogues to deal with, it seems Barry has enough on his plate and Wally’s introduction may take a back seat to the larger action of “Running to Stand Still.” But, since Miller will move on to star in Legends of Tomorrow while Lonsdale will become a series regular, there’s sure to be more of the Kid Flash in the second half of season 2.
Zoom will also return along with The Flash when it returns from its midseason break early next year. Recently, illustrator Andy Poon released his concept art for Zoom in season 2 based on the costume design by Maya Mani. The art features Zoom’s black costume along with his glowing blue eyes, altered symbol, and his monstrous mouth and claws. Take a look at the art below:
The design certainly paints the picture of a formidable foe that Barry will have to face again. Additionally, with their last meeting – and the subsequent fight that landed Barry in a wheelchair with his confidence broken – hanging over the hero’s head, The Flash’s second matchup with Zoom will have much more weight. Of course, though the show has established Zoom as a truly terrifying villain through his actions, his costume certainly adds to the evil effect.
The Flash continues Tuesday with “Running to Stand Still” at 8pm on The CW.
