The CW’s growing DC Comics television universe doubled in size last year thanks to Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl joining previously established series Arrow and The Flash. The CW brought all four of its DC series together at the beginning of December for a massive four-show crossover – the Heroes vs. Aliens event – that earned the network its highest ratings in six years. But, another crossover event is scheduled to debut in February: the two-episode musical crossover between The Flash and Supergirl.
Although initially only envisioned by fans hoping to see The CW put its musically talented actors to good use, executive producer Greg Berlanti confirmed a musical crossover last summer, leaving the door open to characters from Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow to appear. Now, the villain for the musical crossover has been revealed – and it’s exactly the character fans expected.
EW is reporting Berlanti confirmed Music Meister as the villain for The Flash and Supergirl’s musical crossover. During the Riverdale session at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Berlanti said, “It is going to be the Music Meister. We’re finishing writing the script this weekend.” Given the character’s ability to manipulate people through song, as first introduced on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, fans expected Music Meister to be the villain.
Shortly after the annoucement of the crossover, it was rumored The Avengers‘ Joss Whedon would direct the two-part musical episode. Whedon is a fan-favorite writer/director who created both Buffy the Vampire Slayer – which included a musical episode in the show’s sixth season – as well as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. It was additionally rumored The CW was looking to Neil Patrick Harris, who voiced Music Meister on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, to reprise the role in live action – with the rumor seemingly strengthened by Whedon’s connection to Harris through their work on Dr. Horrible.
Last month, Harris was asked whether he’d been approached for the role, and the actor said he hadn’t – but he had heard about the musical crossover likely utilizing Music Meister. Now, when asked whether Harris will appear in The Flash and Supergirl’s musical crossover, Berlanti said, “We haven’t gone about casting it yet, but it’s the right question, though.” It should be noted, Berlanti’s response neither confirms nor denies whether Harris will return as Music Meister.
That said, with casting of Music Meister likely getting underway soon in order to stay on production schedule for The Flash and Supergirl, an official annoucement may be made in the coming weeks. Whether or not Harris does reprise the villainous role remains to be seen, but nevertheless, the Supergirl and The Flash musical crossover is shaping up to be an exciting event for fans.
Supergirl season 2 returns with ‘Supergirl Lives’ Monday January 23 at 8pm on The CW. The Flash returns with ‘Borrowing Problems from the Future’ on Tuesday, January 24th at 8pm on The CW.
