The Flash boss Eric Wallace backs up what last night's season 6 premiere suggested: Barry Allen will die during the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. Barry's disappearance has been teased since the show debuted in 2014. Viewers frequently see a headline from the future, written by reporter Iris West Allen, who's also Barry's wife. The headline reads "Flash Missing, Vanishes in Crisis" with the date April 25, 2024. However, at the end of the season 5 finale, Barry and Iris's daughter, Nora, sacrifices herself and vanishes from the timeline. This causes the newspaper's date to move up to 2019.
During last night's season 6 premiere of The Flash, Barry and Iris were visited by The Monitor, who informed them that Barry will die on December 10, 2019. This falls in the middle of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, which will air for three nights this December, before concluding with two episodes in January. It'll include The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and at least one character from Black Lightning. The Monitor warned Barry and Iris that there's nothing they can do to stop Barry's death, but that he'll save billions with his sacrifice.
Per CBR, The Flash showrunner Wallace confirms that this is the case: "We know that on December 10, 2019, the Flash will die…We’re not messing around...The Monitor showing up and making a cosmic pronouncement drives you to extremes in order to fight against or accept the coming Crisis. And every episode this season…is all about 'do I accept death or do I fight it?'" Wallace also mentioned that, "Crisis turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to…The Flash because it created an immediacy to things." Over the summer, Wallace revealed that Crisis on Infinite Earths will affect the entire sixth season of The Flash, not just the episodes immediately before and after. At the time, he said specifically that the crossover is "not separate from any story throughout the entire 22 episodes."
Barry isn't the only character with his or her fate up in the air during Crisis on Infinite Earths. During last season's Elseworlds crossover, Arrow's Oliver Queen made a deal with The Monitor, trading his life for Barry and Supergirl's. Though, after The Monitor's conversation with Barry, it's unclear how that deal figures in. The Monitor came to collect Oliver during Arrow's season 7 finale, rather than just warning him of the impending Crisis as he did with Barry. Supergirl's death hasn't been mentioned aside from Oliver's deal, but like Barry and Oliver, she dies in the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic.
Though it's unlikely that the Barry Allen viewers know will be dead at the end of the crossover, his death at some point during it is still possible and even likely, given Wallace's comments. Thanks to the powers of both The Monitor and all the Arrowverse superheroes involved in Crisis on Infinite Earths, time travel is probable. This means that The Flash could die, only to be saved by going back in time. It's also possible that different versions of The Flash, Supergirl, and Green Arrow will die, perhaps from other Earths, such as the one visited in Elseworlds. Regardless of what happens, Wallace's remarks are sure to make fans even more excited for the crossover and this season of The Flash.
