On Tuesday October 4th, The Flash makes its highly anticipated return to The CW. After an explosive season 2 finale, we will be finding Barry Allen and company in a much different place when the third season premiers. After defeating Zoom, Barry could not get past the heartbreaking loss of his father, and ended up doing what he decided not to do in the season 1 finale – go back in time and save his mother. By now, most know that this decision will have far reaching ramifications, creating a new timeline – Flashpoint.
When The Flash returns, Barry Allen will find himself in a world where both of his parents are alive, he has virtually no relationship with Iris West, and Cisco Ramon is the richest man in Central City. Further, there will be another Flash protecting Central City – Wally West. Various images and promos have teased these new twists. We have seen Barry discussing his relationship with Iris, explaining the changes to the timeline, and encountering Wally West as the Flash. Now, we have a new extended trailer that gives us, perhaps, our best look yet at the upcoming season.
The CW‘s newly released promo titled “Run Devil Run” teases all of the above and then some. With Crowder’s ‘Run Devil Run’ playing in the background, the trailer nicely runs through some of the moments we were already expecting this season, while offering us some of our first glimpses of new and returning characters.
We first get the obligatory reference to Barry’s no longer close relationship with Iris, Cisco’s wealth, and the change to the timeline. Some of the coolest moments of the trailer are probably Barry’s interactions with Wally West. Barry first explains that in this new reality “There is already a Flash, so I don’t have to be.” But Barry is not so quick to give up his power, and we see him get the upper hand on Wally, sending him crashing into a dumpster. Of course, when Barry and Wally finally speak, Allen refers to him as Kid Flash, which Wally takes exception. Though Iris seems to be convinced, as later in the trailer she tells Wally to listen to Barry as “he’s the Flash.”
The trailer also gives us our first look at Caitlin Snow in the “Flashpoint” reality after being absent from the previous promotional material. But perhaps the most interesting thing about this trailer is that Wally and Barry are going to have to team up to take down the Rival as early as the season premiere. And while the clip tells us that “Two Flashes are better than one,” it does not appear that everything is going to be all peachy. Matt Letcher’s Reverse-Flash reminds us that Barry will soon loses his memories, and “won’t even rememer [he is] the Flash.” With our best looks at the Rival yet, and what appears to be an impending disaster, this may be the best promo for season 3 we have seen thus far. October 4th cannot get here soon enough!
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
