In the season 2 finale of The CW’s DC Comics-based series following the Fastest Man Alive, The Flash set up a particularly famous comic book storyline called Flashpoint. In the arc, Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother from Reverse-Flash and creates an alternate timeline. The Flash will be following a similar path when season 3 kicks off later this fall, with Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) one of the few aware that the world in which he wakes up is not the right timeline.
As a result of the alternate timeline, Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) has become Kid Flash, Iris West (Candice Patton) doesn’t know Barry exists, and Barry’s parents are both still alive. Along with different versions of previously established characters, the Flashpoint arc will introduce new players in Central City. In fact, photos from the second episode of The Flash season 3 have been revealed, introducing a new character played by Harry Potter’s Tom Felton.
EW debuted two new stills from the second episode of The Flash season 3, titled ‘Paradox’, featuring Central City CSI tech Julian Dorn (Felton), who executive producer Todd Helbing teased is “a direct result of Flashpoint.” Further, Helbing explained, “Barry’s had that lab to himself, but now he’s got to share it with this guy, who doesn’t really like him and is kind of prickly.” Take a look at the photos of Dorn alongside both Barry and Detective Joe West (Jesse L. Martin):
Julian Dorn is one of a number of new characters joining The Flash for season 3, including major antagonists Dr. Alchemy and Savitar. But, aside from these two characters, it seems that The Flash’s season 3 roster has primarily added villains with relatively small arcs – like Grey Damon as Mirror Master and Joey King as Magenta. But, the exception seems to be Felton’s Julian Dorn, who will be a recurring character, presumably even after the show wraps up its Flashpoint storyline.
However, little is known about Julian Dorn aside from the fact that he will be somewhat of a rival to Barry. The casting announcement for Felton as Dorn revealed the character “suspects there’s more to Barry Allen than just his good guy reputation.” Julian has additionally been described as “as smart as he is intuitive,” with Felton himself specifically using the terms “abrasive” and “love/hate” to describe their relationship.
So, while fans can expect some tension between Julian Dorn and Barry Allen on The Flash, it’s unclear exactly how their dynamic will develop over the course of season 3 – and how much Dorn will intuit about Barry’s double life as the Fastest Man Alive. Still, with Felton set to debut in episode 2, it won’t be long before fans get to see the dynamic between these rivals once The Flash returns.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
