The CW is gearing up for its fall television schedule as many of its series return from summer hiatus, including the network’s slate of DC Comics-based shows. With Supergirl officially joining fellow superhero series on The CW, the network now has a four-show lineup that also features Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. For its part, when The Flash returns for season 3, the show will be diving into the comic storyline Flashpoint – a limited arc that sees Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) thrust into an alternate timeline when he goes back in time to save his mother from Reverse-Flash.
Season 3 of The Flash will also introduce plenty of new characters, including new main antagonists in Dr. Alchemy and Savitar, the mysterious Julian Dorn played by Harry Potter’s Tom Felton, and a member of the Rogues gallery in Mirror Master (Star-Crossed’s Grey Damon). However, the show’s version of Mirror Master won’t be quite the same as the character from the comics.
While speaking to TVLine, The Flash executive producer Todd Helbing revealed that their take on Mirror Master won’t use the character’s signature mirror gun. The Flash will be adapting the original character to take up the mantle of Mirror Master, Sam Scudder, whose powers are devised through science and the manipulation of mirrors through his gun. But, Helbing explained that on The Flash Scudder will be a metahuman:
“[Mirror Master] doesn’t use the [mirror] gun. He’s a true meta, but he’s not necessarily warping into other dimensions.”
While The Flash’s take on Scudder isn’t necessarily a complete divergence from the comics – the character did acquire metahuman powers in DC’s New 52 continuity – the mirror gun has been a recognizable part of Mirror Master’s villainous character for many years. Plus, The Flash has tweaked similar characters in the past, previously repurposing Weather Wizard’s wand from the comics and turning it into a device created by Cisco (Carlos Valdes) to defeat Mark Mardon.
That said, eliminating the mirror gun and turning Mirror Master into a full-on meta prevents comparison to a number of the show’s other villains – most notably, Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), both of whom use different guns as their source of power. Additionally, in season 2 of The Flash, the series also introduced a gun used to give Lisa Snart (Peyton List) her powers as Golden Glider – a move that may have pushed the series past their quota of using guns to give comic book villains their powers.
Still, it remains to be seen how true to the comics The Flash’s take on Mirror Master will be aside from the mirror gun. But, with Damon set to make his introduction as Sam Scudder in episode four of season 3, fans won’t need to wait for long for this member of the Rogues to make trouble for The Flash.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
