Writer and director Kevin Smith, most recently recognized for his cult filmmaking endeavor Yoga Hosers, has been a well-known name in comic book circles ever since the early 2000’s. As the host of the beloved, ongoing podcast Fatman on Batman, in addition to his acclaimed Green Arrow comic book run from the turn of the century, Smith has more than proven his “nerd credibility” over the years. In addition to Smith’s long list of accomplishments in the realms of both filmmaking as well as comics, the veteran writer/director successfully helmed one of last season’s highest rated episodes of The Flash on The CW. It was so successful, in fact, that Smith was invited back to direct yet another episode for the upcoming season 3.
After last season’s finale, there has been a lot of chatter around the web concerning consequences in the DC universe (namely Arrow) in regard to the “Flashpoint” storyline, as well as potential upcoming arcs for season 3 of The Flash. Additionally, there has been a lot of speculation as to what exactly Smith and company will have in store for the filmmaker’s directed episode, titled “Killer Frost.” A lot of questions still remain unanswered, but it does appear as though a new villain has already been teased.
Smith has recently taken to Twitter to confirm filming a scene with a brand new villain for season 3 of The Flash, Doctor Alchemy. In addition to the reveal, the Clerks creator also proclaimed his excitement concerning the episode as well as the aforementioned big baddie.
Love "directing" @CW_TheFlash so much! We shot a scene with Alchemy last night. I had to hide my nerd-boner with my script the whole time...— KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) September 15, 2016
For those unfamiliar with the villainous Doctor Alchemy, it is a name that has been used by various DC baddies in the past, but most prominently appeared in numerous issues of the comics to fight The Flash. As a brilliant chemist who suffers from multiple personality disorder, Albert Desmond created the alter ego of Doctor Alchemy and gave The Flash just about all he could handle in their various battles.
With the episode currently filming, there are still plenty of unanswered plot questions surrounding the continuation of the Barry Allen saga, but it does appear as though some proverbial breadcrumbs have been left for fans to follow. With the reveal of this new villain, in addition to the aforementioned episode title – “Killer Frost” – fans of the series have been left with a clue or two concerning the episode’s contents.
Whatever the plot of the highly anticipated episode, however, The Flash faithful should most certainly be looking forward to it. As alluded to earlier, Smith’s previously directed episode, “The Runaway Dinosaur,” was an absolute highlight of season 2, and arguably one of the best episodes of the series thus far.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday, October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday, October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday, October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday, October 13th.
