As we countdown to the highly anticipated season 3 premiere of The Flash, more and more details are starting to come out about this fall’s big Flashpoint storyline, which will reportedly also affect Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and maybe Supergirl. When Barry Allen unknowingly created an alternate timeline after going back in time to save his mother’s life, he really had no idea how much it would change the entire world.
In the comics, Barry’s decision altered the lives of both villains and heroes alike, including Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Wonder Woman. Although Superman will show up this season on Supergirl, it’s not clear yet if the repercussions of Flashpoint are going to be felt far away on that alternate earth. As for the other superheroes, they unfortunately won’t be making an appearance. Instead, for now it seems it will be Barry’s own reality that changes the most, as he even starts to forget his previous life.
Recent promos for season 3 have shown Barry’s family back together and Cisco filthy rich, but there’s no doubt all this happiness will come with a cost. For now though, it’s best that fans simply enjoy the ride and the upcoming surprises. For instance, when asked by TVLine whether it’s possible that Iris’ mother Francine West (played by Vanessa A. Williams) could come back to life, The Flash co-showrunner Todd Helbing let a few interesting details slip about Flashpoint: “There are different characters that you will see, some [that have] passed.” He also added that there will be “a lot of easter egg stuff that’s a lot of fun.”
Who would still be alive if Barry had never become The Flash? At this point, it’s unlikely that list includes Francine West, seeing as she died from a disease and not a villain. However, it is possible that other characters such as Eddie Thawne, Ronnie Raymond and the original Harrison Wells from Earth-One could still be alive in this new altered timeline. With Barry’s mother alive, he would have never become The Flash, therefore Eobard Thawne theoretically had no reason to travel back in time.
As for which surprises or easter eggs might show up on the series, well that sky’s the limit on that one. Recent stills and reports from the set have revealed that both Kid Flash and Jesse Quick will be making appearances in costume within the first few episodes. Captain Cold is also set to return in season 3 to face off against the Mirror Master. For the easter eggs, fans will need to have a good eye, and we’ll probably be analyzing the episodes for months to catch everything. The Flashpoint storyline is bound to be different than the comics, but it will no doubt be just as exciting.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
