Warning: This post contains spoilers for the most recent episode of The Flash

The Flash season 3 finale will feature the ultimate showdown between Savitar and Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). This week, fans of The Flash were shocked when 'Infantino Street' ended with Savitar brutally murdering Iris West (Candice Patton). It's a moment that the show has been building to for some time now, but most expected Barry to save the day, and his fiance, in the end. Instead, Team Flash's speed force trap-gun failed, and it looks like Iris met her fate. There is still some speculation, of course. With one episode to go before the season ends, fans are wondering if someone else could have taken Iris's place, or if there is some other way that Iris can remain on the show and become Iris West-Allen in the end.

These questions will be answered in the season finale ('Finish Line') next week, but the trailer for the episode is not giving anything away. However, the show's EP has given away a little hint of what's to come, and promised fans an 'ultimate showdown', as well as yet another potential surprise.

Talking to EW, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg confirmed that there will be a final showdown between the two versions of Barry Allen - The Flash and Savitar - but also hints that the result of this big battle may be somewhat unexpected.

There will be an ultimate showdown with Savitar in the finale, but their [battle] isn’t probably quite what you’re expecting. Just because [Savitar] is a version of Barry, it doesn’t play out exactly as people would expect.

The big final battle shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, of course. The last episode ended with Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) still squaring off for their big fight - but Savitar and Barry haven't had the chance to settle things once and for all. The finale is likely to see a lot of grieving for Iris (assuming that she did actually die), but it is also going to involve two big battles before things are wrapped up for season 3.

Kreisberg's talk of an unexpected final battle is more interesting than his promise of the 'ultimate showdown'. The most obvious end to this story is for Barry to defeat Savitar using his powers in some way, or using a re-worked speed force trap. Another possibility would be for Barry to head back in time and try again - a bad habit of his, and something that he continues to do despite the trouble that it causes. An unexpected battle could mean anything from them talking it out, to Barry refusing to give into despair, and somehow having that change in the timeline wipe out the future actions that created Savitar in the first place... the only thing that is certain is that Barry's fight isn't over yet, and that time travel is all kinds of confusing!
