[This article contains SPOILERS for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash.]

Season 2 of The Flash ended with Barry admitting to Iris that he was too broken and empty inside to love her the way she deserved to be loved. Still shattered from Henry’s death, Barry is desperate for some type of family connection and does what he couldn’t do at the end of season 1; he runs fast enough to travel back in time and save his mother from being murdered by Reverse Flash. Is this the beginning of DCTV bringing Flashpoint to the small screen?

It would be a massive undertaking given the sheer number of DC characters involved in Flashpoint, but the Arrowverse does have its fair share of characters to pull from. With Supergirl having moved the the CW as well, Flashpoint’s alternate timeline could be how she’s brought into the Arrowverse fold. We know that Tom Cavanagh will be returning for season 3, though it’s unclear if he’ll be the Earth-2 version of Harrison Wells from the second season or the Reverse Flash in disguise version of Wells from the first season. Additionally at a MegaCon panel, Carlos Valdez teased that fans can expect a “way different… in a really exciting way” season 3. However, there will also be a new face when The Flash returns.

TV Line notes that casting has begun for a new, major character. The recurring role is expected to be an inquisitive contemporary to Barry who is “as smart as he is intuitive.” The problem with curiosity, however, is that this character doesn’t take anything at face value.

It’s also implied that he’s hiding a secret of his own while he takes it upon himself to discover what makes Barry tick. Scientists like Edwin Gauss (The Folded Man) and Curt Engstrom (The Alchemist), or even criminologist Alexander Petrov (Mister Element) could all be contenders for the upcoming season given this character description.

The million dollar question is, will this recurring character be in the past where Barry is now, or in the present when Barry presumably makes his way back? If the writers run with the Flashpoint story line, how much of season 3 will take place in the alternate timeline? With the introduction of the Justice Society of America in the finale of Legends of Tomorrow, we probably haven’t seen the end of Henry’s doppelganger, the real Jay Garrick (John Wesley Shipp). There are already several recognizable JSA members like Mister Terrific, Black Canary, Hourman, Hawkman, and of course, Flash, that have already been introduced to at some point thanks to The CW’s DCTV universe.

Aside from wishful thinking, though, packing season 3 of The Flash with both JSA and Flashpoint could be biting off more than anyone can chew. Still, there have been no hints at what to expect from series developers Geoff Johns, Marc Guggenheim, and Greg Berlanti, but the writers are already back to work and filming for season 3 begins in mid July.
